'Slow Horses' as in the Apple TV series.....good stuff.

It's actually a far better book than the overpraised Private Dancer.

It's at least 30 years ago that I originally read  'Pillars of the Earth' by Ken Follet and what a fabulous book it was. It was only quite recently that I discovered that 'Pillars' has now morphed into a trilogy known as the 'Kingsbridge trilogy'. So I set about reading all 3 books at the beginning of the year and enjoyed them all.

And then a bigger surprise came to my attention. There was now prequal known as 'The Evening and the Morning' set at the end of the 11th century which I also gobbled up. And to cap it all there is also sequel, 'The Armour of Light', set in the 19th century.

I've read all these books this year and enjoyed them all. 30 years to read a series of books. Wow: that was fun!

Mikaiel Sholokov, a very hard read. "And Quiet Flows the Don," "Tales of the Don" etc.

Sometimes you can't wait to put it down, but very, very informative of the Russian history, psyche and background to the current war.

If you want to understand Putin involve yourself in this stuff.

I would very much like to have a greater understanding of King Vlad the madman, but every time I read something in depth it is so dire, so depressing and so real that it is difficult for me to continue. I applaud you for your effort and maybe one day I'll get around to it, but for now I am trying to keep my head in the sand to stay sane, as there is so much Insanity in the world right now.

I've been getting into espionage, and spy novels and novels with a special forces / assassin type theme. Back in the day Tom Clancy was great, but his work is quite dated. Obviously Barry Eisler is the king of the genre as his characters and scenarios are so well fleshed out and vivid. Next in line is Vince Flynn, who was very good, but his predecessor Kyle Mills really lacks the skill to pull it off.

Does anybody have any suggestions about authors in this category, not the typical John Sanford's, Lee Child's, Alan First, Mick Herron. Somebody closer to Tom Wood (with Victor the Assassin) I think he's a talented enough writer.

It appears to me that anybody with the talent of a Barry Eisler could make a fortune in this genre, as there are so many authors that are doing well, who are writing in a vacuous manner about characters that are just not that interesting, and don't have they much skill as writers.

Not new books in any way, but Charles McCarry would fit the bill

Yes, here's a good book, just right for you:

How Tottenham failed to win a trophy for half a century, by Daniel Levy.
