Condo Technician Shot Dead on Way Home in Bangkok
Picture courtesy of Khoasod. A 29-year-old condo maintenance technician was shot dead while riding his motorcycle home from work in Bangkok. The victim, who had recently enrolled at a well-known vocational college, was gunned down just 100 metres from his residence. The fatal shooting occurred at around 20:00 on 3 March, in Soi Borommaratchachonnani 78, Lane 4, Thawi Watthana district. Police from Thammasala Station, forensic teams, and rescue workers responded to the scene. The victim, identified as Mr. Phongsakorn “Pure” (29), was found lying on his back in a grassy area near the roadside. He had suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the right temple, with the bullet exiting through his left. Near his body, police found his black Honda PCX motorcycle (registration from Bangkok), which had toppled over. His yellow crash helmet bore a bullet hole, and his black shoulder bag was collected as evidence. Eyewitnesses reported hearing the sound of two motorcycles chasing each other, followed by two gunshots. Initially, they assumed the victim had lost control and crashed into a fence, but upon closer inspection discovered the gunshot wound and immediately alerted the authorities. Police suspect that the victim was ambushed while riding home and attempted to flee but was shot in the head, with the bullet piercing his helmet. Detectives are reviewing CCTV footage from the area to trace the shooter’s escape route. The motive remains unclear, but police are investigating whether the attack was linked to vocational college rivalries, as the victim had enrolled at a well-known technical institute in Pathumwan just one month prior. According to his close friends, the victim had been frequently attending college in recent weeks, but it was unclear if he had been involved in any disputes.. Authorities are continuing their investigation and pursuing the gunman, who remains at large. -- 2025-03-04 -

Should I stay ou should I go? (Pattaya, Phuket)
Now is the time to start your study of Thai. Your chances of becoming proficient in the language if you only start after moving here (especially as you get older) are very low, plus it takes a lot of time to get a handle on the language. Language skills are going to be key to making the adjustment, and will also greatly expand your options on where you can live. By the way, I'm not a native French speaker, but when I visited HCMC in Vietnam, not being able to speak a word of Vietnamese, I asked many locals if they could speak French, and I didn't find a single person who could. Perhaps I'm mistaken, but my impression was that the number of Vietnamese who have retained the ability to speak French from the colonial era is miniscule. -

Thai Hospital Staff Accused in Massive Drug Fraud Network
Thai Veteran Hospital to Report Staff for Drug Theft Picture courtesy of Thai PBS In a troubling revelation, the War Veterans Organisation of Thailand (WVO) alongside the Veterans General Hospital is set to seek police action today against several current and former staff, linked to a drug theft ring. The stolen medication is purportedly being resold outside the institution, sparking serious concerns about corruption within the ranks. The bombshell arose following an exposé by Tanadej Pengsuk, a People’s Party MP representing Bangkok. Tanadej disclosed that a former doctor at the hospital had alerted him to the illicit activity that allegedly dated back several years. Spurred into immediate action, the hospital and the WVO conducted an internal investigation. Their inquiries confirmed the allegations, unearthing a network comprising six teams. The individuals implicated include both current and retired nurses, along with other medical personnel. Alarmingly, one member of the network has already confessed to their involvement. In response, the hospital has taken swift precautionary steps. Those under suspicion have been suspended from duty as the investigation continues. This is intended to preserve the integrity of the ongoing inquiry and prevent any potential tampering with evidence. The case adds to growing concerns about internal malpractice in Thailand's healthcare sector, where accountability and transparency are fiercely sought. The decision to escalate the matter to the anti-corruption police signifies the seriousness with which the hospital and the WVO are treating this breach of trust. This unfolding situation raises hard questions about oversight and control within public medical institutions in Thailand, where the wellbeing of veterans and the general public must remain sacrosanct. The outcome of this case will likely have wide-reaching implications for how similar instances are handled in the future, ensuring that such breaches do not recur and trust in public institutions is restored. As developments unfold, all eyes will remain on the authorities to see how they tackle this sensitive case, balancing the need for justice with the prompt restoration of honourable service to those who served the nation, reported Thai PBS. -- 2025-03-04 -
