Cannabis crusade: A glimpse into the Thailand’s cannabis law reforms in 2024

In 2021, Thailand made great strides in its approach to cannabis regulation, becoming the pioneer nation among its Southeast Asian counterparts to decriminalize the use and possession of marijuana. This groundbreaking move has led to an explosion of marijuana-related businesses throughout the country and propelled Thailand into new economic territories.

 

The growth of this business, however, has arisen largely in the absence of significant oversight and regulation. This unchecked expansion has raised several public health concerns, with critics arguing that there are potential risks associated with the increase in recreational cannabis use.

 

The Thai government, being aware of these issues, has been working to tighten its control over the ever-growing marijuana industry. Specifically, the government’s main objective is to confine cannabis use strictly to medical and research contexts, thereby reducing the risks associated with recreational use.

 

To achieve this, the government has proposed a new law, called the Cannabis-Hemp Act. This legislation, which is presently subject to a period of public review, seeks to bolster regulations and controls over the cannabis and hemp industry. The proposed law was intended by the government that these industries meet defined standards and ensure that the industry’s growth does not compromise public health. The law is set to be implemented from 2024 onwards.

Bull <deleted> there’s absence of regulation. Any time they implement a new law or regulation the hemp shops are always putting it into effect sometimes even weeks or at least days before they are even announced. There’s definitely regulation it’s just behind the scenes. Anytime a new regulation is introduced I always seem to find out about it at the hemp shops before the news.

Ok great exactly what I suspected just talk to show the opposition that there are “controls” but in reality it’ll still be the same this time next year. That’s about what I figured would happen, nothing. It’s too good for health and the economy.

Just like the plants this will be watered down to change nothing.

Are they saying they will stop shops selling directly to the public, are they saying all private and online businesses must only sell to industry?

Are they saying no-more recreational use...  thought not.

Recognizing the urgency of this public health crisis, the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) in Thailand took decisive action and spearheaded a comprehensive drowning prevention program.

Have spoken to many thais or see them,Vape cigs and can not swim.Swimming is very important to learn but so many don,t.Weed has not caused many issues from what i have seen.Shops  and businesses have being formed,look at other models similar elsewhere and those countries have no problems.  really.Maybe they will leave it as it is

Legalisation was one of the best growth producing actions ANY Thai government did. Marijuana has been part of the culture of this country for centuries, and it is effectively harmless, as long as managed properly. The problem is, conservative old farts think that all "drugs" are the road to hell. They are forever, and not just in Thailand, trying to stop people enjoying a good time, and altered states of consciousness. At the same time they do not realise that sugar and alcohol are drugs that are FAR more insidious than marijuana!! Have you ever seen a stoned person get violent Never!! Have you ever seen a drunk person get violent or insulting? Yes, all the time!! And yet I note that even though the government is reducing the duties on wine, they are still way higher than on spirits and yet it is spirits that totally destroy the liver and brain with great rapidity compared to wine, which, in moderation, has health benefits. People should be left to enjoy themselves as they wish in the privacy of their own homes. Perhaps Thais drink as much as they do up country now, because their traditional high, from THC was taken away from them by a military government in the 60s following the advice of the USA.

Just as we don't want drunk somchai driving on the roads I really don't want stoned somchai driving either.

 

I think what we will see is all shops will have to be licenced and available for quality inspection. They will only be allowed to sell to a person with a doctor prescription.

 

No shops allowed on or near schools and universities.

More accurately, it is no longer illegal to produce, sell, possess, or consume Cannabis flower within the current guidelines (licensed, over 20, not pregnant, no sales via vending machines, no use in public), from 9 June 2022.

Canada legalized it, removed 7 criminal penalties and added new ones to the criminal code with the “legalization”. 
 

much of the mythical illusions of what cannabis does has faded and medical and recreational cannabis use is very widely accepted in the public now. 
It took about 4 years but things are changing rapidly. Lots of money changes hands and tax revenue is coming in. Government likes it. It's not going away at all. 
my 80 year old mom went on Cannibis oils for cancer treatment and she’s been the most pleasant she’s ever been in her life ever since, cancer is gone and shes a fit active senior now.

i too had my bout with chemo and attribute my recovery from the evil plant. 
There has been 60 years of study around the world in scientific research and every government of the world KNOW it’s good for humans,. But the fight is always about how to divide the spoils of war, because it is a war between differing forces for the dollars.

You missed out the 'medicinal use' is good for humans.

No one here is denying that. That is exactly why it was decriminalised.

The issue here is recreational use and sucking bad contaminates into your lungs and into the lungs of others.

Also, the dangers of driving whilst under the influence of cannabis, and so on.

If government put 10 times the effort they put into controlling PM2.5 (a true health hazard affecting everyone who breathes) into controlling pot, heads would have nothing to worry about ever again. Have they blamed marijuana yet for high levels of 2.5?

In case, like me, anyone is confused as to the difference between the two terms  this is from an Australian perspective:

Thailand, however may have it's own interpretation and I've not looked into any other countries. I'm sure in USA it varies by State.

 

It does appear to me, (a non-recreational drug person out of choice) that one could be in trouble for possession of recreational cannabis whether to smoke or cooked in foodstuff

 

Having said that, I like a drink or several and have absolutely no axes to grind if others like their form of relaxant. Enjoy.....but "let's be careful out there"

Despite my post above, there is a BIG difference between being under the influence of Alcohol or Cannabis and DRIVING under said influence.

In UK the latter is a very serious offence and WILL result in a hefty fine and loss of driving licence, sometimes even prison!

 

IMO, again despite what I said above, that is right and proper
