A Thai food vendor sparked a debate on social media after giving free food to a foreign backpacker in the southern province of Surat Thani. Many netizens hailed the vendor’s gesture while others said the foreign woman just took advantage of Thais’ kindness.

The food vendor shared a video of the foreign backpacker eating food at her restaurant on her TikTok account, @aeowxx, last week.

“Foreigner asked for food. She doesn’t have any money.”

The foreign woman was seen eating at a table in the restaurant with a backpack strapped on. A foreign man who was a customer at the shop also gave the woman a bottle of water before she left.

The vendor explained that she was preparing food on the table for her son. However, her son was too busy with customers and did not have time to eat. The foreign backpacker thought the food was leftover and asked if she could eat it, which the vendor allowed.

Call mommy for your airplane ticket home and start looking for a job.

Keep away from Thailand or anywhere else until you can afford to pay your own way for the duration of stay.  Temporary or permanent.

Some of these backpacking kids are the lowest of the low, you see them begging for their travel expenses from poor Thais, and now begging from somebody trying to make a living selling food, - not giving it away.

I cant imagine getting out of the house without my purse, let alone travel to a foreign country.

How do they do this? Or is it a scam? Just to save money.

Very kind vendor... who are the ones to complain?? If I want to give a plate of food to someone it is my action nothing more. Can the ones who complain/comment about it not look at their own behaviour/attitude before saying something.

Perhaps just an unlucky girl. Perhaps having to get away from a family that made her an unlucky one, for many reasons.

Trying to find herself through travel. Trying to find some healthy experiences, learning experiences.

Quickly ran out of money. And the result for her might be better than to still be amongst her family.

I would buy her a meal. Just the way I am, the way I think, just the way that I find to pay it forward, because I do find that, unlike her, I ended up having some luck. And I will give for that sole reason, thinking that I was one of the lucky ones. Just have enough because of a regular pension, and enough to share.

Wishing that when I die, these are the thoughts that will come to my mind. The thought of having given, and having in return, many 'smiles'.

Enough for me....

She looks like an attractive young lady the food vendor may well be a man. Worse things have happened at sea.Just read shes female as well. It is going viral on tik tok amazing advertising for the price of a meal.

I would hope that you are in the same position as the backpacker one and then I hope that the vendors will give you food and other customers would give you water. Would you be a loser then.

As for the "concerned netizens", I wonder if any of them would do the same. I doubt it.

As far as I am concerned if anyone is hungry and thirsty, they can have my food and drink at any time.

Astonishing that any debate could be sparked over this...

Other than...  what people are putting on the internet (TikTok) for attention these days is simply astonishing...

... Its more astonishing that it draws comment....  and there I go, adding to the ridiculous BS with my own comment...

oh no, I am now a netizen !!!...

The people I hate the most are sanctimonious moralists that spring up every so often on ANN/TVF in the last few years. If I can afford to give help, then I do. If I can't afford it then they are welcome to share what I have.

No strings attached, no comebacks and NO harsh words of condemnation.

I'm sure immigration will show an interest in her too.

How about "judge not, lest ye be judged"? That's an old one.

just took advantage of Thais’ kindness

Doesn't one offer kindness to benefit someone in need? At what point can kindness be taken advantage of?

Interesting how all these commenters are revealing their own character flaws and lack of humanity while sanctimoniously judging something that is between two people and of no one else's concern. As if some compassion and generosity is somehow wrong depending on who and where it is.

Don't see the problem.

Don't see either.

Thais are used to give offerings to the gods.

Maybe they thought she would be a goddess and were giving offerings to her, who knows...
