The Juvenile and Family Court in Sa Kaeo province today fined the parents of five youths, who allegedly killed a 47-year-old woman in early January and disposed of the body near a school pond, 5,000 baht each.

The court found the five sets of parents guilty of promoting or consenting to their children behaving improperly, in way which made it more likely that they would commit offences, in accordance with the Child Protection Act. The penalties are three-months in prison and/or a maximum fine of 30,000 baht on conviction.

The court initially fined each of the parents 10,000 baht, but halved the amount due to their confessions.

Shocking. But even more, the part left out in this excerpt and by the PBS article: the alleged torture of the husband into confessing something he didn't do, by the local police (national newspaper that cannot be linked).

!0 k is too low a figure for the parnts, should have been the maximum , no prison, with the children 10 years each. Sadly another typical cowardly act by THAi males who think that gangs can do whatever they like .

the relatives of the victim are probably horrified .

Do not fear. I am sure these kids learned a valuable lesson with this type of reaction from the courts. When they grow up they will be responsible law-abiding citizens and never do anything to harm another individual again. The parents will be giving punishments to their kids for the monies lost. All 5000 of it. So, this will make the parents more aware when their child is planning to do something so horrible. They will remember the 5000 baht fine and make sure their child does not participate.

Ohh.. Isn't Aprils Fools in 2 weeks?

Well it's a start. Controlling teens at a rebellious age can be difficult but their horrific crime points to other, more serious things, that have gone wrong with their upbringing, this went way beyond bike racing and fighting. The parents are probably at the low end of society where even prison wouldn't cause a change of heart.

Too late when they are teens you start teaching right from wrong virtually from birth......

There is something wrong with a child if it doesn't rebel as a teen, the form it takes is important and sometimes a matter of luck. It was Oscar Wilde who said, "I'm not young enough to know everything."

Many children are rebels as a child, the real different ones , the real rebels , are those that don't rebel, dont do drugs or get tattoos and things .

When I was younger, all the kids rebelled by all wearing the same clothes and all having the same haircut

Some of parents were police officers, not at the low end in terms of status and finances. Definitely at the low end of morality.

Life is very cheap in Thailand, according to this judge. Did the judge receive some special consideration from parents, especially the Police officers?

Also, what is happening to the Police officers who originally wrongfully charged the husband?

One can sue for wrongful arrest, in fact the police only seem to react when threatened with a lawyer or publicity, there is an organization that will take on cases for free if it's in the public interest. A police officer having a son who is a murderer........bad news for him. Anyone know what is happening to the perps?

What about kids that actually performed the murder, do they walk free? None should walk free. Should be put into juvenile detention centres for at least 5 years, with no chance of early release.

Yep. Only they didn't just wrongfully charge the husband, they actually tortured a BS 'confession' out of him. Utter and complete scum.
