Meanwhile, Thai police are trying to locate a woman who was caught on camera vaping during a flight from Mae Fah Luang airport. After the airline touched down in Bangkok, the Finnair crew reported to Suvarnabhumi Airport officials that the two siblings had smoked in the aircraft’s bathroom during the flight to Bangkok. They probably deserve more... According to Section 8 of the Act on Certain Offences Against Air Navigation, smoking on a plane carries penalties of imprisonment of up to one year, a fine of up to 40,000 baht, or both. If we multiply this by 5, it equals 200,000 baht and 5 years in prison for each of the two siblings. 3
Skipalongcassidy
Let's see... I am a nicotine addict and chain smoke... I am going to be on a plane for x hours... what is the penalty for breaking the law if I smoke on the plane... 20,000 baht (apx 500 euro)... I'm ok with that so I go ahead and smoke... better than jonesing right. And you think that only Thais are corrupt... this is what happens throughout the world when the deterrent (punishment) is not severe enough to deter this kind of behavior. 1 1 1

IAMHERE
I've a definite feeling these two Estonian siblings do qualify as 'good in bad out' types. How the officials at the airport couldn't figure out these two are outers is beyond me.

brianthainess
Not that I agree with smoking on a plane but from what I have read the reason they banned it apparently had nothing to do with safety or second hand smoke, it was to save the fuel used to create 'fresh air' / extraction of 'bad air' i.e. recycling air. just saying 2

ChaiyaTH
20,000 baht only? I always thought it was hundreds of thousands of baht if not more, aside from jail, else I would have considered it myself on a 12 hour flight lol.
Popular Post Gsxrnz
The only surprise is that lighting up on a flight is not yet considered a "hate crime". Only a matter of time... 1

Stargeezr
There are international laws about smoking on a plane, and vaping should face the same fines and jail time, in my opinion. How these brothers got a lesser fine and not jail time so far is less than what they should have gotten for smoking on an international flight.
Popular Post AhFarangJa
A work colleague of mine once told me how He had managed to smoke in the toilets of the plane without anyone knowing. He said He put His head into the toilet bowl and flushed it so the air was dragged down. I told Him He must be pretty desperate to put His head into a toilet bowl on a full flight from the Middle East.

Mark Nothing
If free markets existed there would be smoker only airlines. This will likely just be used as an excuse to treat us even more like criminals with extra xrays, patdowns and confiscations.

I've never had a lighter taken from me at security, apart from once going to the PI. Oh and another time when they saw I had two lighters in my bag, they confiscated one of them.
