Family member arrived in Thailand on 30 day on arrival. 30 days are up on the 16th. Immigration doesn't open until the 17th.

What to do - visit immigration when they open and get 7 day extension or do border hop today the 14th (is the border open?) ? He is travelling with Thai wife & kids.

Many thanks in advance.

He can obtain a 30 day extension to his 30 visa exempt entry or a 60 day extension to visit wife

Yes thanks, aware of that. He is just nervous about the 1 day overstay. Should he wait for imm to open or do the border bounce?

Go to immigration on the 17 th for a 30 day extension and he wont get a fine .

Extension is 1900 Baht

Make sure he has his TM30 registered , as that's is require for an extension .

Or do border hop today if he wants

A few day overstay is dealt with and then application for extension.

Personally I would not do a border run.

Which immigration office

He needs a TM30

Should be no issue to go on the 17th since they are closed on the 16th.

I wouldn't want to do a boarder run with the traffic out there right now. Even taking a flight would be a nightmare IMO just getting to the airport.

If they are not open for business they can't really blame him, can they. Which is why they would ignore the overstay.

I think it's probably the best day of the year to drive anywhere.  Anybody going anywhere is already there.  But of course that will all change on 16/17th.

They're closed on the 16th, so you can go to immigration to apply on the 17th.

Not a big deal, just expect immigration to be crowded after the long break (go there early, assume it will take a long time).

They certainly can, given that the advice given so often here is to get the extension a week to 10 days before VE permissions expire.

The fault lies entirely with the person who has not bothered to plan properly.

However that is not to say that the IO will make life uncomfortable for the individual concerned.

Why not? They will just tell him he should've done the extension prior to Songkran, just like millions of other people who had their stamp expiring over the Songkran holidays.

They will tell him? That's just your opinion. Which you're entitles to have, of course, although you stated it as fact saying 'they will' instead of saying 'they might'. You also say that millions - MILLIONS - have their stamp expiring during Songkran. Again, you state it as a fact, based on nothing at all.

Nonsense, they will just process the extension. What's with this silly and completely unnecessary scare-mongering?

The absolute worst case is that immigration rejects the application.

When this happens, the passport will be stamped with 7 days to leave Thailand.

In other words, you get a guaranteed 7 day extension, if not the full 30.

Viphavadee is unusually empty - no traffic at all on the way to Dong Muang airport.

Note that in addition to the usual requirements for an extension, his wife will have to be with him if he wants 60 days. If not he will only get 30 days.

Actually they don't "ignore" it, chances are they will get an "overstay fine waived" stamp

Maybe. Maybe not. As usual, it will depend on the office and officer.
