Thaksin Seeks Annex To ‘Secret Deal’ To Bring Yingluck Back Home

DE FACTO PHEU THAI BOSS-cum-convict on parole Thaksin Shinawatra is virtually seeking a fresh annex to a “secret deal” which he had earlier made with the powers-that-be to the extent that his sister/deposed prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra be literally free to return home from self-exile abroad sooner or later without being subsequently thrown in jail, according to partisan sources.

 

Thaksin who has obviously “recovered from critical illnesses” in a matter of days after he was granted parole last February is yet to refresh the “secret deal” with the ultra-conservative, powerful elite class to pave way for the long-planned homecoming of Yingluck who has already spent seven years of self-exile overseas as had been the case of himself having returned home after 17 years of self-exile abroad last August.

 

Thaksin had allegedly managed to keep himself from being literally put behind bars for a single day to otherwise serve a curtailed, one-year jail sentence and being instead granted contentious, double-standard privileges for a six-month period at Police Hospital in lieu of Bangkok Remand Prison.

 

As part of the “secret deal” under which the billionaire Thaksin had been granted the privileges unprovided for ordinary convicts, the de facto Pheu Thai boss had been practically obliged to return favours to the powers-that-be who would decidedly prefer to leave the helm of government to his party rather than tolerate seeing the Move Forward in government following the progressive party’s electoral victory in which they had won most MP seats last year.

 

The Move Forward led by Pita Limjaroenrat has not only been politically considered an “enemy No.1” in the eye of the ultra-conservative elite but the de facto Pheu Thai boss since both finally buried the hatchet and reconciled with each other, given their shared upset caused by the Move Forward in last year’s election, the partisan sources said.

Money is not really the main factor. Its more about using his perceived popularity as a bulwark against the progessive movement and the threat that it represents to the established status quo. They will do anything to keep him sweet.

Nothing about the ownership, the staff, how long they have been in existence. In fact until this thread I had never even heard of them.

To true and MFP were denied their right to govern through a deal that saw Thaksin return with no jail time. Yingluck I expect will see the same amount of jail time. Zero.

The corruption was exemplified by the removal of both Thaksin and Yingluck from power by the military in coups whilst the electoral process (elections) were happening, and it looked very much like they were on course to win; and of course the subsequent post coup " prosecutions". Thaksin took himself off, well aware that if he went into Junta incarceration he would never emerge alive. Yingluck was more tricky - popular nationally and well known internationally she "disappeared", her teenage son was effectively taken into care - remember "he must complete his Army Cadet training", and then she was basically driven to the Cambodian border and turfed out. In both cases the events leading to their exiles were engineered by the military (representing the establishment powerbase) and went against the norms of both the democratic and judicial processes, supposedly guaranteed by the constitution. Moreover they were, and remain, deeply unpopular. 

 

All of which, to my mind, makes the pearl clutching swooning outrage of the "Thaksin has never served his time" and "Yingluck was sentenced in absentia" brigade rather entertaining!

 

Now, in order to maintain the unstable and fragile construct which maintains the unpopular and electorally shaky coalition in power, the military and establishment it serves have to swallow their pride and allow his (and likely her) return, to buy enough popularity to stave off the threat of the progressive movement. They know that they can ban Pita and dissolve his party but that movement will not go away. They have lost the young, Yingluck and Thaksin are a desperate and (must be) oh so bitter tasting attempt to keep the older generation.

 

It has all rather come back to bite the bemedalled ones on the bum!

2 coups and 2 popularly elected Prime Ministers have to self-exile. Generals and the perpetractors of the coups untouched. The political expediency of the courts questionable. Legacy of the coups must be wiped clean. Exile politicians and activists should be allowed to return granted by an amnesty. There should no legal or political interference in the next election. Government should be the choice of the majority.
