Popular Post GammaGlobulin Posted May 24, 2024 Popular Post Posted May 24, 2024 Hi Folks, (This TOPIC is not really a Topic for any computer forum, but more just a casual topic for some place like....the....PUB on TV.....) I just thought that the time is now ripe for all of us to flee Windows-11, in favor of some Linux Flavor, like rats from a sinking ship. In my case, I have been using Linux for about 25 years. In the early years of using Linux, well then Linux was not so very easy to install and use as it is now. But, more importantly, why is this new introduction of Windows-11 causing so many more people to dump the newest Windows OS version/ There are many reasons, such as the newly-introduced increased intrusiveness of the new Windows offering. Personally, for me, I will never again register my email, my personal data, NOTHING, with Windows. Sure, it's true that Google requires registering a LOT of info in order to use Google products and tools, etc. But, Google is REQUIRED for my daily life....and...... Windows is NOT required for me to use, if I choose not to. Up to this point, using Windows 7, then 8, then 10, I was pretty OF with it....just because Windows encouraged me to use pirated editions of their software. However, beginning now....MS has become much more rigid and stringent in their requirements to login to Microsoft Corp, and begin to toe the MS line. There once was a time when one could use pirated MS Windows pretty anonymously, and they did not care. Now, though, perhaps due to market saturation, and the shift to subscription-type payments to MS, things are changing. We can see what lies ahead for users of Windows, as MS plans for the future. THIS is the main reason, about a month ago, I said..... NO, NO, NO.....Just like Amy Winehouse...... I just don't want to stay hooked on Windows....for.....ANYTHING, now or in the future. OpenSUSE is just as good as WINDOWS, or, some say....even better. So, this is the main reason, BEING SUCH A LAZY PERSON MYSELF, that I have realized that I must get off my duff, and....then... Just spend a few hours to remove Windows from ALL my computers...and move to openSUSE. Also, I feel this great and wonderful sense of NOSTALGIA by returning to where I was, eight years ago....just..... Using openSUSE. You can pick your own personal Linux Flavor if you like, and I am not saying you should choose to use openSUSE....but.... I am only saying that you would be pretty foolish NOT to. So, I am just asking the question: Are you ready to dump WINDOWS...... BIG TIME, like Trump always loves to say? After you move, THIS TIME, you will NEVER LOOK BACK....just as I WILL NOT....ever.....ever again. See you on the LINUX side guys,.....when... You finally see the light of day.... Best regards, And wishing you well with the Linux Kernel..... Gamma G. Note: Here, in my opinion, should be the Mascot for the Linux Kernel..... Note2: So sorry about poor Amy..... I loved her almost as much as I love Linus..... NOTE3: Windows and MS is just no....FUN...anymore.....! LINUX is just about as much fun as AMY! Also, as we all know...... TORVALDS loves to work in his pajamas....... (did you know that? I did....) NOTE4: RIP....Amy..... You were and ARE GREAT..... Amazing, too! NOTE5: RIP Freddy and Bowie, too..... EVERYONE NEEDS LINUX......especially TODAY!!!!!! 2 1 1 2

And, concerning Lou Reed VS Amy Winehouse....if you look on the stage: Lou Reed: And the Colored Girls say.... Amy Winehouse: And the Black Boys go...... The same.... Check it out! Amy must have done this quite intentionally.... She was no dummy.... And, don't be a dummy......either..... USE Linux And, begin using Linux, now, before you are too dumb in your old age to make the changeover.... Just my best advice to you. LINUX DESKTOP is the wave of the future. Linux will never die. And, it will just get stronger, even though this might take some time of adoption...yet.... It WILL HAPPEN.... Don't get left behind, Folks.....! Do NOT get left behind! Best advice I can give to you, these days.... Take care.... Gamma G. 1 1

ChaiyaTH Posted May 24, 2024 Posted May 24, 2024 Because linux was lacking too much for the average user and that now is no longer the case. And it is still just very few anyway. 1

Yes, this is one of the BEST comments I have read on TV....in many months. In fact....as time goes by (or should I say: as time has gone by, and passes on).....there is less and less offered by Windows that Linux cannot offer better, based on a far better OS. Your prescient and valid comment is nothing but further refreshment to mine ears. THIS is the MAIN reason that.....a few months ago..... I decided to FINALLY and FOREVER shuck and shun Windows.....Forever, and Forever, til Kingdom Come..... There is REALLY nothing that I cannot do, these days, for my work, using Linux...and so..... It's, for me, these days...... Bye, Bye, Windows..... And, you can even think of my thinking in another more musical way, if you will.... No more Monopolists for Me, I say! Still, I do love the humor of Gates, even though it destroyed so such. You cannot stifle technology, as Gates did, without hurting millions. No wonder he builds huge Armageddon-proof bunkers under his magnificent residences. Give me Linux, any day. 1
GammaGlobulin Posted May 24, 2024 Author Posted May 24, 2024 Of course...just one more consideration.... People like me are tired of hooking-up with Windows and Microsoft. With this new Windows-11, MS has truly crossed the Rubicon.... 1

freeworld Posted May 25, 2024 Posted May 25, 2024 Why would anyone want to flee windows since a nice new update is coming for windows 11 in the fall as reported in an article on Arstechnica. https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/05/biggest-windows-11-update-in-2-years-nearly-finalized-enters-release-preview/ Biggest Windows 11 update in 2 years nearly finalized, enters Release Preview Whats not to like about the following useful feature: Extract: The biggest 24H2 feature specific to Copilot+ PCs is Recall, which continually takes snapshots of everything you do with your PC so that you can look up your own activities later. This comes with obvious privacy and security risks, though Microsoft says that all of Recall’s data is encrypted on disk and processed entirely locally by the NPU rather than leveraging the cloud. Other Copilot+ features include Live Captions for captioning video files or video calls in real time and features for generating new images and enhancing existing images.
Purdey Posted May 25, 2024 Posted May 25, 2024 I still use Windows 7 at home and zero Microsoft applications. It has an XP and an Android emulator just in case. Just add a virus scanner and it's still good. We use Windows 11 at work and it is fine for M$ Office use. I have 2 very old PCs that I have used Linux flavors on but all require some knowledge of their operating system as they are too old for Ubuntu and Suze. Stick with Windows 7 if you can. 1 1

All these features are wonderful if you trust the corporation behind them. Unfortunately MS like all other large corporations cannot be trusted at all. I am still using Windows 7 with and have turned off all updates years ago. It works fine for now but I dread that one of these days my favourite applications will no longer work and I will be forced to make a change to Windows 10 which might give me a few more years. I can't believe that Windows 11 is already 2 years old. So far the only thing that stopped working are Firefox updates other than security updates. I can live with that. My desktop computer is more than 7 years old yet it's fast, has plenty of memory and storage, so I have no need to upgrade but one day it will fail on my and then when I get a new computer I imagine it will have the latest Windows on it. Not sure how I will handle that day. 2 1

I have been tempted to migrate to Linux a few times but each time I chickened out because I was afraid some of my favourite applications and games would not work. There are some programs I have been using for 20+ years that I don't want to lose. There are just enough features in Windows that keep me from jumping ship even though I get really annoyed with MS at times. 2 1
Confuscious Posted May 25, 2024 Posted May 25, 2024 I still use DUAL-BOOT. Windows 11/Ubuntu Many years already. Best of both worlds. In the prehystoric times, when dinosaurs were wandering over the world, i used also DUAL-BOOT on my 386DX. - 1 boot diskette with MS-DOS 5 - 1 boot diskette with CP/M I even had some programs which required to boot from their own diskette (TeleMecanique PLC language, Siemens S5, etc.)
FlorC Posted May 25, 2024 Posted May 25, 2024 Stepping from XP to W11 , I hated it , but like someone a year ago wrote here on the forum: You get used to it .... and he was right. I tried to get away from W11 last year . Linux mint and zorin OS , it s_cked , and those are among the best for trying linux and getting away from windows. I was glad to re-install W11. After a million distro's , linux just can't get it right , from new hardware support to software and work flow. If MS goes full AI and even more annoying , I'd install Mint but very reluctantly. For now I don't update W11 anymore. I don't like all the new things they are putting in. I just made 1 computer from 2 identical , 17 years old and put XP on it again. It works well and I need it to get into my old truecrypt volumes. I'm not putting linux on that one either.

Freddy42OZ Posted May 25, 2024 Posted May 25, 2024 I ditched Windows for Linux back in 1990 or thereabouts. Linux is way better IMHO 1

tao40 Posted May 25, 2024 Posted May 25, 2024 I have an intense dislike for MS, i've mostly used Linux for about 15 years now (current computer is dual boot MS/Linux). I've been using Ubuntu, but would be open to trying another flavor of Linux if I found one that is even more user friendly, or had better options for software & apps.

Paris333 Posted May 25, 2024 Posted May 25, 2024 Microsoft Windows11 .......are you kidding?🙃 No thanks! I just built a SUPERCOMPUTER which is heavy and takes up two of my large workstation desks. The thing is HUGE! I hate phones. I still use my NOTE4, in fact. In use for 10 years, and I have no plan to replace it. Why pay more money to Apple or Samsung when I do not need to do so? 1
