What are the positive and negative reasons for living in Thailand?

Thailand was ranked the 6th best country for expats to live and work according to a survey done by Internations.  I'm curious to compare and see what people living here think are the positive and negative reasons for making the move to Thailand and who plans to stay and who plans to leave.

I didn't read that article, only the headline.

 

I think all of those rank lists don't make much sense for many people.

I.e. there might be a category like international schools. If you have children, then that matters, otherwise not.

And I am sure there is no category: How easy is it to find sexy company for the night.

 

I know not all people who live here come here because of the not to be named category. But for many of us that is not irrelevant.

 

And then there is the weather. Some like it hot. Some are very sensitive to air pollution. There is no "best" for everybody.

I started a topic in the Thailand General Chat section asking what people considered the positives and negatives of living in Thailand to see individually what people consider the good and bad and also if they plan to stay or leave.

 

It will be interesting to compare if more people think the positives outnumber the negatives and why they think that.  I have my list and I'll share that later with those that reply to the topic.

Why is it interesting for you if more people think like this or like that?

 

If you like a busy city and 30 degrees and motorcycle taxis and you don't care too much about air pollution why do you care if many people agree with you?

It's like is it better to live in the city or up country. These is no better. It's different, and it depends on what individuals like.

They are not, they seen nothing changed in 20 years, while it did change elsewhere. The majority of Thais want the same thing just as much. To not see that, is stupid.

• What is your role or function?
• What is your motivation for being here?
• What is the driving force behind your presence?

Variations on "What are the pros and cons of TH?"

• What are the advantages and disadvantages of TH?
• What are the upsides and downsides of TH?
• What are the positive and negative aspects of TH?
• What are the benefits and drawbacks of TH?
• What are the merits and demerits of TH?

The possibilities are endless, as the same core question can be rephrased in many different ways to elicit a similar response. Pro's: Affordability (both for renting and buying land/property). Eating out is cheap. Convenience of shopping at 7/11, Big C, Lotus's and CJ. Availability and affordability of local community hospital services and High Street clinics. Specialist dental services extremely good value. Reliability of water, electricity and internet/mobile service. Cheap and comfortable internal air and coach travel. Railways are an option and improving.

 

Con's: March/April can be too hot. Wish I was elsewhere. Soi dogs and everyone turning their pets loose. Excrement everywhere. Lack of choice in bread, butter and cheese. Pies and pastries are not common.

Beer prices are relatively inexpensive.

Some food is acceptable for a reasonable price.

Accommodation is not expensive.

I like it here , it is nice and warm , prices are much lower than in the west , people are generally nice ( to me ) , Omnipresent corruption will always enable me to buy my way out , just in case ...

I do not get bills or letters from the government in my postbox .

When getting old , I'll hire help easily ...

And , anyway , did you not follow the news about what happens in the west ?

They are all gone mad it seems .

Thailand is one of the best and most secure places to stay .

Some negatives , ok , but not as many as in the west .

Positives are that it's a far better quality of life than where I came from and still is.

 

Negative is having to deal with Thai bureaucracy but it's only a occasional negative.

The positives far out weigh the negatives for me, but I am still very angry and feel cheated by Thai Immigration or maybe I should say the Thai government the way things have changed for me since I came to stay in Thailand in 2005. There are a few examples but one of them is I would never have come to Thailand if I knew that I was going to be treated like a criminal on parole with this ridiculous 90 day reporting.

I would say it is a bit more than only an occasional negative, ie the way that different IO's and different branches of the same banks all seem to make up their own rules.

I have no idea what you posted as I was looking to see what people considered the plusses and minuses of living in Thailand and if they planned to stay or leave but I guess that went over your head.
