HIP REPLACEMENT SURGERY IN THAILAND
I had hip replacements on both sides. I did both in my home country, for 2 reasons: 1. I have seen many hip replacements done here, and the results were quite often not satisfactory. Having said that, from my 2 hip replacements, 1 was botched. And the usual international hospitals do have surgeons who do a good job. I did consult them, but I did the procedure in Europe. 2. The main reason I haven't done it here is the complete lack of post-operative aftercare and rehabilitation. Here, they send you home after a couple of days in hospital, and then you are on your own. What you really need is intense physical therapy for weeks and months. This includes ergotherapy (like learning how to get into a car or how to have sex), teaching how to walk (with and later without crutches), later adequate strength training. You do need professional guidance for all of this. This is just as important as the surgery itself. In Bangkok, you can't even walk with your new joint, let alone with crutches. You need a stretch of even ground, as long as possible (100m would be boring like hell after a while, but where in Thailand do you find 3km even, walkable ground?) (Small things: in Thailand, I couldn't even find a wedge shaped cushion for my body weight - more than 50kg. Hard to find decent crutches, too.) -

Can you defend yourself?
The problem with defending yourself in public interactions is that usually the person attacking you has nothing to lose, while you have everything to lose. Some random loser in a bar or on the street picks a screaming match with you. He might be overstaying his visa, has just enough money to pay rent for the next week, has no job or career, and if he’s Thai, he could be earning just 250 Baht a day. Meanwhile, you’ve built your entire life. Saving for retirement, making investments, pursuing education, advancing your career, and sending your kids to an expensive school. If he gets arrested, it doesn’t matter to him. If you get arrested, you could lose everything. So usually you keep your head down and walk away, makes you look like a 🐈 in front of everybody. Because you’re not willing to risk losing everything over of some loser. --- Defending yourself in a life-or-death situation is, of course, different, but I think there is only a small chance of getting into such a situation. -

My summary: Amid new signs of easing in the U.S.'s continuing mid-year COVID surge, weekly COVID deaths rose again to a fully reported tally of 971 for week ending August 10, more than triple the weekly low of 308 COVID deaths in early June. Still, the current weekly COVID deaths tally remains less than half of that reported at the beginning of 2024 amid the now-typical year-end/holidays COVID surge. The rate of sampled hospitalizations due to COVID reversed prior weekly increases and began declining for the week ending August 17. Two other publicly reported COVID forward-looking indicators -- Emergency Department visits and positive COVID testing rates -- continued modest prior declines in the latest update through August 31, though the positive COVID testing rate remained high at a 16.3% rate. This is very rare, scarce, unfeasible, almost impossible. I always stay under the radar, keep out of trouble but some people go looking for trouble, it's in their nature, look at some of the members here, even sitting behind their keyboards they want to antagonize, provoking others regularly, going out of their way to interact with hostility, calling people rude, nasty names. I'm lucky, I have good genes and take care of myself. I'm in good shape, tall, fit, so I probably don't fit the description of a random attack, these people look for the frail etc. It's a strange world, at times I see these frail weak people causing trouble, thinking that they won't get a smack in the mouth but if you annoy someone enough or take on the wrong person you will suffer the consequences. Bring back the BIFF, some people need a lesson in life. -

The above contains almost zero sugar. Use vinegar, soy sauce, white pepper, chili pepper for any required additional flavoring. Eat bread and tuna, as desired, for an extra snack. -

Bringing a bike into Thailand as sports luggage
I've taken 2 bicycles into Thailand. Never a problem. There's a parable I recalled, although the one I remembered was about Garlic across the France/Belgian border. The one I find online is about Sand on the Mexico/US border. Story here. -
