NZ brothers return home after 4 months in Thai custody for assault

I'm outraged that the NZ government got involved in bring the criminal back to NZ. I'll give a pass to the brother that didn't assault the cop, but the one that did should be a guest of the Thai government for a while.

I doubt the NZ government was involved. Probably the parents of the two brothers found a lawyer who was prepared to act as a go-between and fix a deal where all parties were compensated and charges dropped.

Something the brothers know nothing about.

  • Must have been expensive.

"overwhelming support they’ve received from their family, friends, and the New Zealand Government." Nothing about the widespread condemnation they deserved and got. They don't deserve anyone's support

This is strange behaviour.

Why would they do something so bloody stupid?

There is no suggestion the New Zealand government was involved. NZ has very strong anti-corruption laws and laws regarding bribery. Any NZ official involved in this sort of thing would be dismissed and it would be massive news in the country and that person would become near unemployable. Where the article says the brothers thanked for the NZ government for their support, that absolutely does not mean the NZ government negotiated to get them out. No way would that happen.

Appalling behaviour. Hopefully they have be banned for life from Thailand.

The New Zealand Government condoning this behaviour, what a surprise.

Pretty much guarantee that didn't happen. The NZ Embassy in Bangkok no doubt fulfilled its duties to check on the brothers when they were in custody and convey messages to parents in NZ, but as for negotiating a way out, no way. If you believe that you have no idea about the attitudes of Kiwis in government. The NZ Embassy in Bangkok has long been helpful to its citizens, but they don't help Kiwis to get out of trouble by negotiating pay-offs or bribing public officials of the host country. Not a chance that happened.

The local radio station reported differently.

It was reported 'Intervention of their embassy'.

This is alarming.

I would put that down to errant reporting or an inarticulate newsreader. NO WAY would the embassy get involved like that.

Nonsense, the Embassy would have good reasons to believe that these boys only did what they had to do protect themselves from a rabid pig.

What a <deleted>ty family. Instead of thanking friends and acquaintances, as well as the NZ government, for their support, they would have been better off apologizing to the police officer and the Thai public.  5 years Bangkok-Hilton would have been appropriate.

Incomprehensible behaviour , do they think its the wild west, so disappointed they drag the New Zealand name down and the embassy would have only been doing what any country's embassy does to make sure its citizen's are treated fairly, thank goodness banned from entering beautiful Thailand and wish they never entered in the first place.

Not you or the NZ numpties........😂

Not even an apology from the family?  I guess they must’ve payed an arm and a leg to have the morons freed

They should have done at least five years for that. Just the handgun in the commission of a felony part should be worth that. Did the cop have to apologize too?

No mention or comment from the Thai side, must have paid the asking price in full.
