A recent survey has uncovered a deep-seated distrust among the Thai populace towards their government, with more than 69% of respondents expressing doubts that the government acts in the country’s best interests.

Conducted by the Institute of Future Studies for Development (IFD) from August 17 to 20, the survey sampled 1,251 adults nationwide. The findings paint a troubling picture of a political landscape dominated by unseen forces, with a significant majority of Thais convinced that the country’s main political parties are under the thumb of powerful individuals.

When asked whether they believed the eight leading political parties in Thailand were controlled by influential figures, the responses were overwhelming. Below are the percentages of those who answered in the affirmative:

  • Pheu Thai Party: 94%
  • Bhumjaithai Party: 92.57%
  • United Thai Nation Party: 85.94%
  • Palang Pracharath Party: 85.83%
  • Chart Thai Pattana Party: 83.38%
  • Democrat Party: 82.20%
  • Prachachart Party: 81.14%
  • People’s Party: 68.07%

The survey also explored public perceptions of governmental decision-making. When asked if they believed these decisions were influenced by people in power, 55.94% responded affirmatively, while 35.82% were unsure. Only a meagre 8.24% believed the government operated independently.

Perhaps the most damning finding was the public’s lack of confidence in the government’s ability to act in the nation’s best interests. A striking 69.32% of respondents stated they do not trust the government to do what is right for the country, leaving just 30.68% with faith in the current administration, reported The Nation.

Good at least hopefully they start to know what they have to change

30.68% are either on the take, uneducated, or just plain ignorant.

Why is the headline 'Shocking survey' instead of predictable judgement?

Yes it is frustrating, but, could be worse, look at Burma! My own country ain't much better. Don't trust any of them in power because, aside from the blatant graft, there's only a finite amount of money that has to be in more than one place and the bs that goes along with that facade. The monetary system is the corruptor of all!

This pretty much falls in line with voting sentiment. I wonder if this number would be inverted (70% having faith in govt.) if MFP had been able to form their rightful place as the government of Thailand.

little wonder Thai people have little trust in the government

The de facto leader of the government has shown a total disregard of the law and disrespect of the majority of Thai voters since his return from exile.

I'm shocked it's only 69%

But will they change or will we have more of the same...

If I was a betting man my money would be on the latter.

Those figures look a bit low to me.

I demand a recount.

Can't wait for the next elections ... 3 more years ... the present unelected rulers will do a lot of damage to the country in this time frame ...

After the total debacle of the last election, Thailand should be 100% ashamed of themselves!!!

There is nothing that can be changed, it's the same the whole world over, nobody likes their own government because everybody knows no matter what form of government one has it's a farce, a government is never really in charge as the strings are pulled elsewhere, I'm just surprised that the average Thai knows this.

Simple fix - new rule nobody can have ANY link to politics after 10 years service on punishment of 10 years prison

No need to change. By next week a new poll will be released stating the overwhelming confidence in the current government and their ability to be independent of influential figures.

You’re all corrupt how can you trust any of them look at the new Prime Minister her father was a crook left the country 15 years fly backs and his private expensive jet. He’s a hero now her aunt she fled the country a day before the verdict. She’s a thief and now she’s in there supposedly p.m. but really knows she’s putting all the strings here state of affairs in Thailand TIT.

Say it ain't so. We rob you of democracy, we deny and outlaw candidates of your choice, and you don't trust us?

A new election will mean nothing, the military and Mr. Golden Boots will still control the population and Money. IMO

Not a surprise whenever you as a Foreigner have to deal with any Government entity, it is very hard work and frustrating not all the time to be fair but if you want a decision, it is worse than watching grass grow.

Thais are terribly xenophobic and dealing with a foreigner you can see them moving around to avoid dealing with you .

Generally the Thai public are far better, but put them in a position of authority then the sloping shoulders and lack of customer service shows through , ,but do not get  me started on the Royal Thai Police .
