The Death penalty your opinion

Featured Replies

I was quite shocked to read that USA still has the death penalty

A man yesterday after serving 30 years yes 30 years... . received the death penalty for murdering a teenager back in 1992

I was a bit traumatic reading that

I feel now he has been punished enough, isn't it heartless after all this time to murder him as well ?

We must forgive and trust him on his rehabilitation back into society    Let's face it....most countries would of released him after 30 years anyway

Some people won't rehabilitate.

You're not showing any compassion for the victim or their family.

Was the victim a 13 or 14yo girl, held hostage, tortured and raped repeatedly with sharp objects etc.

Let's face it, we have evil living amongst us.

It is unfortunate that the New Testament is silent on this point. On the other hand, the Old Testament is all for it. And islam loves nothing more than inflicting it. Choose your poison.

Definitely should be death penalty with suitable safeguards. I've always thought that, purely because it's so expensive to keep people in prison.

Alternatively make people pay for their crimes, police costs, court costs, prison costs etc

He should have been executed 30 years ago but due to appeals he got to live all those years extra.

He hasn't been "punished".......he's had a bonus.

Lucky him.

NB. I am speculating about the appeals because you have given no references or information whatsoever about what the circumstances were.

From laughing at the world then straight to the death penalty. WOW, aren't you just the bearer of joyous topics. Did they teach you all that in mop school?

There are cases where people get convicted with too little evidence. And those cases are the reason that the death penalty is problematic. After someone was killed you can't just go back: Sorry, we made a mistake.

But IMHO there are enough cases where there is more than enough evidence that certain people committed terrible crimes. Why should we let them live and pay a lot of money for that.

A prominent example is this guy, who without question killed deliberately many people. Kill him! Problem solved.

Anders Behring Breivik - Wikipedia

And there are many other murderer and rapist out there who should be executed. Don't waste any resources on those bad guys. Kill them!

Let's ask his victim if he has been punished enough

The USA does not really have a "death penalty"  Unless you consider as in your example a 30 year wait in prison before going to the gallows to truly be a death penalty.  Singapore has a death penalty.  You get one appeal only to see if the trial was conducted properly.  If it was you are executed within about 90 days.

There are those who say the death penalty is not a deterrent.  I don't think we know.  Certainly the criminal knowing they are just as likely to die in prison from old age as actually being executed is totally different than knowing you will be immediately put the death shortly after being sentenced.

As to your empathy for the criminal, I too have empathy for human life.  But my empathy lies with the victim(s) not  with the killer

For all of its supposed shortcomings the death penalty when carried out does have one really great attribute. There are no repeat offenders.

Yeah, they should be shot imediately... not kept on death row for years at great expense to the tax payers.

I'm all for it, and only one appeal not kept on death row for years and years, I'm with the victims,

In China, do they still execute corrupt officials, I'm all for that,

Life without parole can be worse than the death penalty. Prisoners on death row often ask to put to death especially when they know it's going to done humanely (put to sleep).

The death penalty is not punishment. It's release. The criminal might not like the idea of dying, but once it's over, it's finished and the criminal no longer pays for his crime. He doesn't even know about it.

Instead, let the convicted felons do hard time. Rock piles, shoveling gravel from morning till night. Or civil construction work, stoop labor, chain-gang work.
No TV, no movies, no music. Nothing but three meals a day and hard labor.

That's punishment.

40,000 Palestinians have paid the death penalty without trial for crimes on October 7 that most of them were not involved in.
And about 100,000 maimed.

For the crime in the OP, yeah, why not, punishment fits the crime.

Should his wife, mother, children and other family members be killed also? No.

Should they bulldoze his house, and that of his neighbors? No

Agree. Also, the police cannot be trusted. They find someone who fits their profile. They work on obtaining confessions and collecting evidence. However, negative evidence (proving their suspect couldn't have done the crime) somehow never gets presented in court.

The victim is dead. Never gets a 2nd chance. With dna much easier to prove cases now. Was dodgy before.

You think he's been punished enough if that teenager was yours? I'm  very sure the parents of that teenager woud not agree with you..Think about them before you start feeling sorry for a  murderer

If that was implemented here there'd be no one in the office ...  they'd all be dead

  • Puts US on a list with mostly the lowest of the low Iran, Saudi Arabia, China etc.  in the case of human rights.
  • Proven  not a deterrent to crime.  Nor is it restorative justice.
  • Racist, many innocent people have been executed, bad legal defense and biased justice system

My personal opinion is there are people who deserve to be tortured and killed, like those who leave their children to bake to death in cars while they go in to drink or gamble, but their is no logic to it. Should be banned in all circumstances.

The problem is if there has been a miscarriage of justice. In the UK, two men in the 1950s, in separate cases were executed and later found to be innocent. Just last year a children's nurse was found guilty of murdering babies in her care. There are now serious doubts about her guilt. There is no death penalty in the UK now. If there were maybe she would have been executed by now. You can't bring dead people back. Their family and friends go through the same, or worse heartache than those that they were wrongly accused of murdering. Worse, because they were innocent.

I'm all for all murderers and rapists and cheats & scammers should be executed.  :whistling:
