Politicians fib.  They embellish, they ignore inconvenient information, they exaggerate, they skew statistics to make themselves look good.  We're fine with that.  It's been going on for 250 years.

 

Americans aren't looking for a saint.  Take Bill Clinton.  Horrible morals, but a pretty good president.  Unlike Carter.  Extremely moral man, who was a disaster in the White House.  Americans are looking for someone to get us out of the morass that has gotten so much worse in the past 3-1/2 years.   

 

Which is what Trump should have focused on.  He wouldn't need a plan to deport 10 million illegals if they hadn't been let in by the border czar.  Nobody needed to announce a plan for Ukraine or Israel or WW3 after the Trump years.

 

I'm disappointed that Trump took the bait.  But I'm not surprised, given that the ABC moderators were anything but neutral in their extended leadups to many of the questions.   

 

And Kamala reminds me of the people I've encountered in my career that are great at getting jobs and wangling promotions.  But they're horrible at actually doing the job.  I can't think of a single place that was better for Kamala having worked there.

Border?  Nope.  California crime?  Nope.  Economy?  Nope.  Afghanistan, Ukraine and Israel?  Nope.

The bias of the Trump collective is on display. In their eyes, Trump can do no wrong.

VP Harris' performance produced sighs of relief from her supporters. She held her own.

It's down to the few thousand voters in 7 key states and what they will do.

 

Attack the candidates all you want, but it does not matter. Trump's support is baked in. It's rock solid and won't change, no matter what. He has at least 46% of voter's support. He has never exceeded 50% support. The Harris support has 47%-50% and it has at times surpassed 50%. Trump's gaffes and multiple falsehoods won't change his core supporters. They will remain. What it may do, and the immediate interviews with focus groups suggest, is that some undecideds and some wavering Trump supporters will move to Harris and stay there. All she needs is the few thousand voters in the 7 states and more turnout in  her core states  to ensure a victory.  Once people decide, they won't change their votes.

It will come down to getting people to vote.

She is still a politician, and she avoided some questions, but all in all her presentation wasn't bad.

Trump repeated his usual lies. And he added some more lies.

He talked about he would end the war in Ukraine, but somehow, he didn't want to tell us how.

He still believes he won the last election.

He talked about Obamacare, and they asked him if after 9 years he has a better plan. Yes, he has a better plan, but not really, this is why he keeps Obamacare.

 

My summary:

She is ready to be president. Not perfect, but better than many of us feared.

He is still spreading lies. His MAGA followers might believe those lies, but are undecided voters really so stupid?

The question is, how will undecided voters react to this? I think it's all in her favor. Good.

In 1944 it was no secret that Franklin D. Roosevelt would not live long enough to finish a full 4-year term. The current VP Henry Wallace was too left-leaning for the more conservative Party top brass. Harry Truman became their choice as he was the conservative Democratic Senator who most party faithful disliked the least. (FDR died not 3 months after 1945 inauguration)

 

An unassuming country bumpkin, Truman is now generally listed in the top-10 Presidents all time.

Obviously, people inside of America have first person experience with things. But we outside of the USA can still follow events and facts.

 

Apart from immigration and inflation many Americans are also concerned about if they will get another 4 years with a lying maniac or if they will get a leader who acts presidential.

I have hope that Trump is losing. He clearly didn't win this debate.

Actually, the immigration issue was raised. Harris closed with a reference to how the turnout for Trump at his events was lagging. The weird old loon took the bait and went after Harris on that score.

The US Presidential election, because the USA is the world's greatest military and economic superpower, and the US dollar is effectively a world currency, is of great importance and significance to the rest of the world. That is why so many of us watch with interest, and can have strong views on the candidates. Whatever the outcome on November the 5th matters very much to the rest of the world. For those of us who live in democracies it is of consequence because it shapes the future, for those who live under various oppressive regimes it is even simpler - America for all that we criticise is a beacon. We cannot afford to let the light be dimmed, or perish the thought, be extinguished.
