Foreign 'Mafia' Harass Tourists in Pattaya, Taunt Local Police

when I lived in Chiang Mai a few years ago now, Burmese used to hassle people walking home from Tapei Gate. They even killed someone on a bike with a machete .

The police did nothing much until all the bar owners got together and paid the police to patrol the area ,they came into the bars and signed a book every few hours , i think it cost 300 Bhat a week for each bar but it cleaned the Burmese out.

Was thinking that this is the responsibility of the restaurant owners' community to sort out, not nutters with baseball bats. If I were a customer and became intimidated by an outsider with the restaurant taking no action I would go talk to the most senior person and make it clear that if the restaurant was not going to do anything about it I would walk out without paying, or maybe with a deduction. It maybe that the customers have to take the initiative in getting ultimate police action.

I remember being approached by a semi-intimidating beggar as I sat outside a Phnom Penh restaurant on a tourist street. I got up and went to the manager and asked if he was going to do anything about it. He ummed and aaghed and I made it clear I would walk and never come back. He immediately went and confronted the beggar and I did go back a few days later and the manager came over and said he was happy I had taken that action because he had since talked with a few of his neighbouring restaurateurs and they had all decided to support each other in stopping the street beggars coming to table.

I'm pretty sure the use of word "mafia" is wrong and misleading.

Yes, I sympathise with your coming from such a dreadful country, but other countries, including Thailand, have some of the same problems as your home.

Lou, thanks for your input, here's me thinking this was about Thailand.

So more of a beggar than mafia, good we cleared that up

I read the head line expecting a story about a European or American gang trying to start a protection racket. Instead it was a single Burmese beggar.

Local residents and business owners are urging the authorities to take immediate action to resolve the problem and restore safety in Pattaya,

------------------------------------------------------------------------

If the inept police neglects, they better take matters into own hands fast.

Hiring local goons and beat them up badly.

Toss them into the sea in the dark of the night.

Who cares even if criminal illegal aliens disappear all of sudden?

One great thing about this kingdom, not so many bleeding-heart do-gooders unlike in the west.

You're thanking me for responding to someone else?  Since when have you been his spokesman...or the arbiter of what (not addressed to you) is deserving of thanks, come to that?

but the word mafia is more sensationalist and gets more clicks.

Someone needs a baseball bat!

I reckon a nice hard wod walking stick would do the job. A tad more covert and with it's smaller diameter would wreak havoc on the extremeties, esescially the lower. And being a hardwood, I reckon a good blow to to noggin would get the message across as you "limp" away with your walking stick perfectly suited for walking street. Cheers.

Maybe the locals could club together and hire some private security guys . Suitably armed with BB bats they would soon discourage these low lifes who plague Patts .

I remember a few years ago at a concert there was a scruffy old Thai guy harassing 2 members of the audience . The security soon dealt with him by ripping his shirt off and giving him a kicking with their large boots .

Instant justice . Shame things like this aren`t allowed in the Liberal West anymore .

One sick sociology polluting today's 1st world:

Too many inept criminal-friendly do-gooders.

Constantly protecting the human rights of the social vermin,

no concern for the victims and justice.

So a foreign Mafia taunting the established RTP Mafia? Maybe their Don will give the RTP an offer they can't refuse.

As a customer, if  I saw a business owner beat a beggar with a bat they would quickly lose my business.

You can try to use the bat to threaten someone to leave.... but if they will not leave, you prepared to beat them for it? not only that don't be surprised if show up at your business the next day and your windows are shattered or the place is vandalized

"Mafia"

Give me a break

mafia is kind of a loose term for gang... pattaya has a taxi mafia..  that threatens uber and grab drivers and dont use meters.

There use to be a Russian mafia operating in Pattaya, not sure if they moved on or pay the media and police to stay out of their business operating like yakuza.

You might not like it.

But not everyone.

Especially when the beggars started to look like extortionists.

I would rather applause such an operator; brave enough to defend own workplace.

Some deserves sympathy.

Some doesn't.

If they want any compassion from others, they better behave themselves and look peaceful.

Thugs to be beaten up.

What a load of BS since when is a muppet beggar "mafia".

Look at his pants, he is a joke, should get a few slaps and he won't be back again.

The Pattaya News saying now that the police have been down and arrested these beggars today.

In what world do you live where a baseball bat resolves this issue ?  How is violence the answer at anytime except self defense.?

Pattaya! Where are you currently, La La land?

Did you read the original post or simply start spouting off without bothering? This was hardly a mild mannered beggar that comes a visiting regular... he bothers the customers, demanding money.

If you prefer to be bothered  by someone demanding money off you than see him removed by the owner you are at odds..... I suspect there would be  customers left behind , glad to see the back of this guy.

Mate, it's an open forum, we can reply to any comment,  if you don't like it, leave the forum, or send a,DM... it's your choice.

So much for ensuring the safety of the bread and butter of the economy, obviously no photo op and the comfort of the station and always on WiFi is preferred.

I have lived in Thailand 18 years and have never needed a baseball bat to resolve any issues

Interesting and thanks. Where I lived in Khon Kaen Province, the popular and busy "farang" bar also had this arrangement, but not every few hours. Once a night, the local police used to call, do a check to see if all okay and sign the book which was kept in a box near the main entrance. This was not for Burmese beggars (none in that part of Thailand), but for any abnoxious drunk or drugged ex-pats, tourists or Thais causing problems.  Eventually, the landlord and myself became Tourist Police Volunteers and a small area in the bar became an information point. It became a very busy family orientated bar with pool, quiz and speciality food nights, also a children's play area for Thai and foreign kids. This was pre-covid and sadly, trading eventually ceased. The landlord now teaches English, firstly in Vietnam but now back in Thailand. I moved to Cambodia.

A newcomer eh...... I have lived here some time myself, I have a baseball bat on hand but fortunately never needed it. Then again, my home is not a restaurant being bothered by arrogant and aggressive beggars.

On one occasion, she threatened to call the police, but the man confidently retorted that he wasn’t afraid of the authorities and encouraged her to call them.

Why did she threaten to call the police and didn't just call them? and keep calling them every time he shows up. Even if he doesn't get arrested and deported he'll get the message and move on to an easier target. Bullies talk big but back down as soon as you stand up to them.
