Beach umbrella vendors closed for selling alcohol

Featured Replies

The what now? I thought that was the point, having a nice shady umbrella on the beach to enjoy a cold beer? As far as I know every single beach umbrella spot sells beer because tourists like it, but only two were closed for 15 days for doing so?

"Initial findings revealed violations related to the sale of alcohol, as stipulated in Chapter 3, Section 27, which prohibits the sale of alcoholic beverages and cannabis products in public areas."

Not the Pattaya I used to enjoy in the 80s and 90s .... I would have been astounded if I couldn't get a cold one brought to my deck chair.

Madness, but look at Phuket where they even banned deck chairs and sun beds on the beaches. For many Westerners, the whole point of a visit to the beach is to lie comfortably in the sun for a few hours. There's no telling what crazy ideas Thai officialdom will come up with next, from making the Pattaya Beach walkway a shade-free zone to preventing expats from buying new homes and cars as nobody can be sure they won't end up with a huge tax bill now on any large sum they remit to Thailand after 1/1/24.

As I remember the selling of alcohol by beach chair vendors was banned some time ago...not just of late....many flout it of course up to them.

It really is beyond ridiculous that beach goers aren't allowed to enjoy an ice cold beer while lounging on the beach.

A world-class holiday resort (as they like to see and portray themselves) should realize that.

Pattaya residents are encouraged to voice their concerns about beach conditions and local regulations via the Pattaya Mayor’s direct page or hotline 1337.

We the people have complained a million times over the years about how they have destroyed the beach walkway by cutting down all the shade trees......They could care less..

I just walked the length of Pattaya beach and most umbrella vendors have open beer bottles on the tables, even the ones opposite the police station.

Maybe it was just no beer at Jomtien beach?

With the exception of Buddha days, there is always beer available at Pattaya beach.  The problem is do you pay the vendors 50% more to get served a large bottle, with a glass and a bucket of ice ?

Or, do as the Thais and buy everything from 7/11. I've seen the vendors go ballistic when the foreign tourists dares to brings his own.

As an aside, I remember there were strict laws about lighting up fags a few years back (huge fines & imprisonment).

Now annoyingly, people smoke everywhere, with toxic clouds under the umbrellas when there is no breeze.

Life used to be simple in Pattaya.

Well I support this smoking is good and good for you...

Next time, go to Vietnam or a nice sunny beach in Spain, Malta or the Carribean...prices won't be all that more in most cases, much less for VietNam and it will be all cleaner, more foreigner friendly and you won't get that much cheated as in Thailand.

No rocket science...

Crazy crazy.  money grabbing politicos legilise cannabis allow gambling but wont allow you to enjoy a beer under your umbrella on the beach.

hypocrisy in action

Unbelievable bull manure; tourists on holidays loved to sit in beach chairs, snooze, read or chat and enjoy an ice cold beer. You get beer on EVERY beach in Asia except the semi-divine land of Thailand ....

It is not unusual, nor ridiculous, similar rules exist in parts of the US, UK and Europe.

Cobblers.  Smoking may well be illegal but no one has ever been imprisoned for doing so on the beach, nor had "huge fines" imposed.   Maximum penalties are there purely as a deterrent.

Well to be fair, if one smoked pot and gambled openly on the beach here, I expect police would be along to hassle you.

Well who knows how many tourists were ever/never arrested?   Only someone connected to the authorities would have that info.
