How are non-maga Americans describing yourselves to non-Americans that you meet now?

No.

I didn’t get any original ideas addressing the actual topic here.

So as I didn't,  I'll just play it by ear on a case by case basis.

Much to worry. Unless you're wearing your pink satin running shorts they'll just assume you're full  lit MAGA supporter. 👍

Good citizenship is much more than just about elections.

The fight now is to try to stop the magautocrats from permanently killing American democracy.

I agree with your thought, but this is not the way to go about it. These topics are only going to continue the name calling and poop throwing.

The short answer is I describe myself in positive terms: Im 67 years old,  an artist and rock and roll music performer, and entertainer. My purpose in life is to put smiles on people's faces. Literally. I am not defined by what is happening in the US right now. As to MAGA, I refuse to discuss it. Period. I change the subject or walk away. It's nobody's business but mine. It's the same as though someone asked me about a tragic event. "Say, tell me about that shark attack when you lost both legs".  Would you ask someone who was raped to talk about it? I don't want to talk or think about the subject, it's too disturbing and I refuse. It's the same with everyone I know personally from facebook friends to my own brother. That's more than 500 Americans that I know personally who are in my age group.  I came of age during the Vietnam war and managed to escape that with my life.  My father served in WWII. Those values, the values of "the greatest generation",  1940 to 1960, are the values I grew up with and hold dear. We are now grieving for those values, for democracy. For the next 4 years I'm going to try with all of my might to keep the subject out of my mind and stick to positive thoughts and positive energy. Any discussion about this cannot end in a good place. Even if the foregoing were not the case there would be no point - most people here haven't a clue about what has really happened because they have never lived there, they haven't watched the decades long process of the erosion of democracy and the consolidation of wealth and power in the US. It's not a matter of "do you like the guy or not". Anyone who simplifies it to such a shallow level cannot be communicated with on the subject. There's a lot of people who thought Hitler was an OK guy before 1939. Just because we haven't yet experienced a holocaust of that magnitude yet, it doesn't change the agenda and likely outcome which is now moving forward. You may not see 6 million bodies, but this begins with a guy who was convicted of 34 felonies, found liable for sexual assault and for financial crimes and penalties in excess of 450 million dollars. These are facts, irrefutable. Anyone who thinks this isn't true had better start running as fast as they can in the opposite direction from me. Now that Trump has the power he will make all of his crimes go away. He will free all of those convicted of a violent assault  at his beckoning on the US Capitol. On his to do list one of the first things will be withdrawal from NATO.  How will you like that? He almost did it last time, or weren't you paying attention? No more alliances unless they have been bought and paid for. Mark my words. Support for Ukraine will be cut off. If Putin invades Poland no one in the new administration will care. I kid you not. These are promises that have already been made and there is no debate about it. My bottom line is my views and feelings are discussed only with people I know well enough for there to be a sensible and productive dialog. And those conversations will be few and far between. There are enough positive subjects for people to celebrate life and move forward. The reason I moved to Thailand is specifically to be as far away from that hot mess dumpster fire of the US as possible. Out of the reach of reprehensible people that I cannot otherwise get away from. Racists accosting me in grocery store parking lots, shootings next door to my house. And my advice is, don't EVER bring MAGA up with an American unless they bring it up first. You’ll be rubbing salt into deep wounds. Have a little respect for our loss of something dear to our hearts.

It's very difficult to sell and ETFs have same issues as fiat.

The bullion company I deal with obviously did not get your memo.

I can buy and sell gold in my account with about thirty seconds of typing, and a couple of mouse clicks.

Difficult to sell? Nonsense.

With maga cruelty is the point.

In all honesty, being from Asia, I had never heard the term...MAGA...until less than 3 weeks ago.

I dislike dumb acronyms that are not acronyms, technically, that oversimplify.

MAGA-hats are only fit to fit those with Pea Brains.

I did not vote for Trump.

But....so FING Glad that the Salad-Woman is OUT.

In fact....

I'm Glad, I'm Glad, I'm GLAD.......!

I am so Glad that I am Royal-Albert-Hall GLAD....!!!

This came up for me the other day and I wasn't sure how to deal with it.

Now that we know that the maga autocratic cult was not a one time fluke, that maga now represents who we are as a country for better or worse (worse) when we meet non-Americans if we don't support the maga cult, and the question of nationality comes up, do we just say Americans, or do we somehow try to communicate we're not "that" maga kind of American?

Of course I'm not talking about faking being Canadian, is that really fair to Canadians. I can't speak for all non-maga Americans, but I still love my national homeland and I'm not ashamed to be American.

But I'm ashamed of maga.

In some ways, I think all Americans have some complicity in maga happening, just as all Russians have some complicity in Putin happening.

I compare this to Russians now. You meet a Russian and most people will wonder, is this a Z Putin loving Russian, an opponent, or someone completely apolitical.  I look at Russians I may meet and tend to guess based on age, appearance, affect, etc. but not always right.

I have an appearance that could easily be maga (or not).

Thinking out loud, I guess the wisest way is to check for any reaction from new people that indicates they are wondering (are you a maga or not) and then easing into the discussion if they seem receptive.

Is there another way? I can't imagine just announcing, I'm American but I hate Trump.

Penny for your thoughts?

Expat presumably 🤔

The OP was baiting, faulty reasoning from the start.

Left really needs to start asking itself why they lost all hope and support of the electorate.

Horrible President, perhaps even worse VP, worst campaign of my lifetime, everyone so righteous and SMUG, putting absurd woke agenda before concerns of common folk, war and more war - for votes. This past election was all absolute strong arming the American people and (continuance) consolidating power at expense of the citizenry

Bernie said it best

I interact with so few foreigners where I live in Thailand, pretty much a non-issue here.

But my heart grows heavy thinking about what it must feel like to be a non-native English speaker, immigrant, or black, brown or yellow person in America post election. I imagine America is a land of averted gazes these days.

They are all doing very well in the US making 22hr in Cali McDonald's or own there own businesses. Each day they recall what they left behind and feel blessed.

Post is totally racist. The presumption that because English isn't your first language or you're someone of color that America didn't or can't work for you. California is a screaming example of just the opposite

Not a thing has changed in daily life for those colored people you've chosen to single out presumably because they are now subject to maga racist attacks!!!!!!!!!

Hispanic record turn out for Trump.

You tell me how they're gonna find these undocumented aliens. Trump says you can tell just by looking at them. I'm sure it'll be fun walking down the street getting the fish eye everywhere you go. Maybe those whose papers are in order can get a tattoo or something so they can get through check points easier. :whistling: You don't think vigilantism, street thuggery, harassment are possibilities? I do.

I’m not maga even though you think anyone who doesn’t agree with you is. I don’t describe myself self to anyone, what they see is what they get, the rest is up to them.

That's what the left does. They do not do opinion very well. Yes, Trump is a douche, but he just has a different opinion and people clearly like the guy. And what is wrong with wanting to make one's country better? This whole maga thing (highly stigmatised now--if Obama invented it it wouldn't be a thing) is what America was wholesale back in the day... you guys have just forgotten what you are about. For supporting Brexit (yes, sorry, very off topic) and wanting my own country to have say-so on its own policy, I'm apparently racist. It is divisive and damaging as is the inflammatory tat coming from the democrats. All you guys whinging at Trump and his supporters ad nauseam need to come together a bit and find common ground.

Op, just say you're a yank that does not agree with its leadership and would prefer to make America worse.

Btw, did he open up the FBI files on JFK yet?

If asked, I just say that I'm from the States. If they ask more, I mention my home state of Alabama. I think some then just assume that I'm MAGA.

I am not a fan of Trump. I've met 1 new person in the last 2 years. He is an ex-cop and a Trump fan.

We get along great, with several common interests OUTSIDE of politics and a genuine curiosity about each other's habits and doings. He's a super nice guy and we just agreed to not debate politics. Same with one of my many brothers.
