Why do so many Thai prostitutes marry their customers?

I went to a friend of a friend’s wedding on Friday night in Pattaya. 
 

Nearly everyone attending was a farang with a thai wife or girlfriend. A few kids.

 

Everyone was reasonably well behaved until the booze started flowing when things started getting messy and the women’s true colors started showing up. 
 

It was fairly obvious that nearly every one of them was a former bar girl, most were tattooed, they got sleazier and louder as the night wore on both verbally and physically.

 

It was a fun night. 
 

I was thinking about half of them were not showing much or any respect to their husbands. It appeared the more drunk some of them got the less they liked their husbands and were not even pretending to like them.
Almost like they were trying to start trouble with their husbands/boyfriends which put me on edge a bit. Very touchy feely.
 

They seem to have chosen a life where they have to spend most of their time with men they don’t really like. An underlying tension that comes out when they are drunk?

 

Why is it that so many prostitutes in Thailand marry their customers? There are prostitutes in probably every country in the world, but I have never seen this before, it seems a uniquely Thai phenomenon. There must be thousands of them. 
 

Why is it so different in Thailand?

 

ps. The dowry was 200,000 and some gold. The wife was a stunner. An oldie, but a goodie. Nice big set of bolt-ons.

Usually the boyfriend/husband pays them a monthly salary, plus don't forget thye are older, on the decline, they'll know they are getting less customers

Many love to drink. That's what they call a good time. And when those boyfriends and husbands were still their customers that also called that a good time. The problem is that some of those husbands thought their wife would change...

- They speak better English than any out of Thai University

- They are not like dead fish in bed

- They can handle money well, some time the flow is one way - to her

- They have great self confidence

- They are not specially intelligent but very street smart. No need to look after in any place or country.

- If needed, they can get money in any place quickly

- They are FUN!

I took one to EU and she was the best travel partner man can wish. Marry her? Hell NO!

IMHO prostitutes in western countries, as far as I know, behave very different from so called prostitutes in Thailand.

Many girls just see it like dancing, drinking, having fun, and f@$@# for money. Let's party and get paid for it. I think most girls in Thailand go maybe with one customer per day.

In "the west" 10 or more customers per day seems to be not unusual. The business has the same name, but it is very different.

Obviously not everybody is the same in each country, but there are in general huge differences.

The question should be, why do so many customers marry a low hanging catch of a prostitute when there are so many good well educated hard working women woman here. Personally I just don’t get it, though I suppose some guys are too lazy and are not up to the task of it.

The farang are usually lonely and what is the word I'm looking for ??....where they NEED someone to look after them... similar to a MOTHER figure 

That's why a lot of Australian.men go to the Philippines as Filipina women are MOTHER figures 

They are looking for someone who pretends to CARE

They're desperate. 

 

Most of these Thai women that are working in the sex industry marry these guys because they have no choice.

 

Living in the village, these girls have a baby, the child's loser father has abandoned her, she doesn't receive welfare payments or social security from the government, nor does the Thai government garnish the fathers wages. 

 

It's practical, it's food on the table and makes sense for her to marry a foreigner.

There is many categories of prostitutes, same as not every customers are the same. 

 

A few girls I know, was dumped by their Western bf, who took care of them for a decade until they got older, and found a new one who was younger. 

 

So their way to freelancing or finding work in a tourist area, was not that far away, when thinking all their bridges was already burned. 

 

Then you got the hardcore party girls, 🥳

Firstly there's 2 types of Thai ladies that work in bars. There's the younger ones who are out for sex, drugs and party's and of course money. Then there's the ones 35 yo plus such as my wife who are looking for a long term relationship and a future they never had in previous relationships with Thai men. To some Thai women a bar is the best chance to meet a farang. Of course it doesn't always workout but most do. I've been married to my wife for 24 years and we're still together. My wife has 2 sisters, one married to an English guy and the other sister married to an Austrian. These two marriages are a few years less than mine. May I add they come from a very poor Isaan area, their father had 10 kids and never had a job in his entire life.

My wife said she was happy with her Thai husband but he died in a motor bike accident when he was 30 yo. She has 2 daughters in their late 40's so thankfully there's never been any kids involved.

... why does anyone marry their customer in any service oriented job or profession.   Or how meeting any partner that develops into a relationship or eventually marriage, even matter at all

... dated workers under my supervision.  Had to fire one, awkward.

... I've dated the Mitsubishi auto service rep, when owning one

... dated waitresses, food servers, bartenders, and how met present wife/food server

... dated my physical therapist

... dated 2 prostitutes, met in social setting (non P4P), actually married the one.   Obviously didn't work out, but no major regrets 

... dated another gal, suspect was prostitute, but topic never came up.  Both those relationships ended as daughter didn't like them, and it's a package deal, so they ended.

 

Why does anyone marry any one in the 21st Century ?

Seems that institution is dying out fast, as it should IMHO

I think it's hard to equate Thai sex work to that in the west

 

In the West it breaks down to the high class 'escorts' and the low class druggies.

 

In Thailand I think you are right that the older ladies they just want an out for them and their kids, and if it means sleeping with a host of old white guys until one of them falls for them, thats what it takes

Because they were there. It is that simple. Convenience. Perhaps they think the guy is a decent enough chap and he seems to have enough money to offer some financial stability, which is what most women are looking for anywhere in the world. The question is not why they marry the guys, the question is why do the guys marry them?

 

We have a lot of choices in this life and marrying a bar girl is probably not one of the smarter ones. 

 

I also think it's a question of how long have they been doing it if they are relatively new and you can somehow ascertain that to be a fact then they are probably of a somewhat healthier nature emotionally. How many men has she been with? If she is relatively new, and has only gotten with between 20-200 men, more than likely she is still sane, and could possess a good heart. If she has gotten with over 200, the chances decrease. If over 500, harder for her to relate to men as decent human beings. Once you get to the "around the world level", where she has been with over 1,000 men, all bets are off. If the girl is in her mid-30s and she's been doing it for 10 years and she's very good looking, chances are she's averaging at least four guys a week, so run the numbers, that's 2,000 right there. If she's hot and she's working massage it could be closer to 5,000. 

 

After 1,000 the heart likely hardens, and more than likely she is bitter for life. I am sure there are exceptions. But, the risk in getting involved with a highly experienced bar girl, or massage girl, is very high. 

 

With the exception of the men who are clever enough to hire a private detective to look into her background, and pay some real money to do it right, there is no way to know. They all have stories. And most of the stories are ones that they know we want to hear. So many times I have heard friends say, "Oh no, she is new. She has only been working at the bar two weeks. I was her first customer. She worked in a factory before that. I could tell how innocent she was'. Yeah right!

Why do they not end up in marraige with customers from other race or countries (I am talking in general, there could be exceptions) like Africans, Arabs, Chinese, Indians, Etc.? Why the fatal attraction between elderly white men and Thai women from the lower economic strata?

I've experienced the situation you've described myself - in many cases it's painfully obvious what the wife's "background" is. Sometimes her bar girl English gives it away immediately, in other cases the truth comes out once she's drunk or throws a fit. Embarrassing.

Why not asking why so many foreigners get married with a prostitute?

The story the op tell i have never experienced.I been to some weddings in Thailand and everyone was happy and had a great time.Dont think that every former prostitute is bad girls.
