What Movies or TV shows are you watching (2025)

Sounds like I'll like it then if our past evaluations of videos are indicative. 8.2 imdb with 130k raters...

I really liked it. It's loosely (to put it mildly) based on the novel Vineland by Thomas Pynchon (Anderson also directed Inherent Vice, based on another of his novels). The plot is convoluted, encompassing everything from crazed revolutionaries to sexual obsession and sanctuary cities but it all makes sense, sort of, in the end.

I think Anderson is certainly one of the best directors around today, most famous for things like Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood, The Master, etc. But I even liked his "rom-con" Licorice Pizza, though ordiinarily I never watch movies in that genre.

I am currently revisiting Mortimer and Whitehouse: Gone Fishing. All eight series on BBC iPlayer (may also be available on U which is the new name for what was Dave). It is such a lovely, gentle half hour watch. Probably more known to the Brits, it's Bob Mortimer (Vic and Bob, Would I lie to you etc.) and Paul Whitehouse (Fast show, Harry Enfield Television, numerous films etc). They fish various waters around the UK.

The joy of it is the fishing almost takes a back seat (although they are like a couple of kids when they catch something). They talk about their health woes both having had heart operations before the first series was commissioned. Bob is in charge of sourcing the accommodation which is never a bland hotel or similar. He also has to attempt to knock them up a bit of heart healthy lunch on the riverbanks. Occasionally, a medical expert or celebrity swings by for a chat.

I urge you to give it a look even if you don't like fishing. It is a joyous watch and makes me laugh and feel sad almost every episode. As it's only half an hour and you don't have to concentrate on a plot it's a perfect watch when your sat down having your tea. It's amazing to see how they have changed (deteriorated may be a better description) over the eight years or so the program has been airing.

The Beast in Me

Just started to watch this netflix series, so far so good, good acting, script is good.

I watched (again) the two-part "series" on BBC iPlayer, called, "Witness for the prosecution" which is based on the Agatha Christie novel and I enjoyed it the second time round as well, especially as I'm a fan of Toby Jones and David Haig, not to mention Andrea Riseborough.
It made for a pleasant evenings entertainment after the trials and tribulations of spending three days trying to renew my driving licences (but that's another story for elsewhere).

I watched a very interesting three part series on BBC iPlayer called "Empire" and I found it very informative and enlightening and in these times of "immigration" it struck a chord...."EMPIRE" presented by David Olusoga:-  "How did a small island once rule over a quarter of the world's population? This shared history still shapes us today - and billions of people are part of its story".

I learned a lot from this doco series and was so pleased that I watched it and it will probably be of interest to many of "UK Heritage".

Thanks Mike!

Be a few days before I start watching them, I've just got Godfather 2, & it's terrific.

Hardly remember anything about it, fortunately.

One of the joys of old age; watching the 1st episode of a new series for three consecutive weeks.

You're right.  I enjoyed 'All her Fault' too.  Lots of plot twists + a satisfying ending.

Yes  watched it last night. One Battle After Another was quite entertaining. From some of the comments I was expecting Inception(2010) level complexity but it was pretty straight forward if you followed the 20 year story arc which it followed linearly and didn't jump around. Even the little woman liked it.

John Harrison....... invented the first successful marine chronometer,  While not being the just 1 answer, it was a hugh advantage-- Before Harrison, sailors could accurately determine their latitude (north/south position) but not their longitude--with Harrisons invention Britain could go to the furthest country on the Globe New Zealand and back within 6-8 months while the others were just being lost at sea.

I used to love fishing in the UK, I ran a commercial fishery after I graduated, but I hated this show. Too much about his heart operation, it also makes me feel old. I remember them on Friday night TV when I was a kid.

I just started watching this .. featuring Daisy Haggard from breeders.

It's very good, but Claire Danes always looks like she's about to have a nervous breakdown. She was the same in Homeland.

He's a purveyor of pseudo-history unfortunately.

Trots out the same long debunked tropes about black soldiers at Hadrian's wall, Beachy Head Lady and 'black communities' living in Britain hundreds of years ago.

Also neglects to mention that he is descended from the biggest slave traders in Africa while focusing on the evils committed by white people during the transatlantic slave trade 🤔

Apparently there were "African" soldiers at Hadrians Wall....this from AI....

Yes, black soldiers served at Hadrian's Wall, primarily from the North African unit known as the Numerus Maurorum Aurelianorum (Unit of Aurelian Moors), stationed near what is now Burgh-by-Sands in Cumbria. While "Moor" referred to people from North Africa, which included sub-Saharan Africans, some evidence also suggests the presence of "Ethiopians" (a term for Africans) at the Wall, supported by an anecdote involving Emperor Septimius Severus.

Also the Beachy Head lady is said to be of African descent!!

Just watched it, nearly 3 hours long and almost completely incomprehensible.

Director must have been on drugs during this one.

Some people just don't comprehend good cinema when they see it? The director has a fine portfolio of work already and this one "One Battle After Another" is simply a masterpiece. Not just one of the best movies this year, but the past several years. Watched it twice already, it is exhilarating non stop entertainment.

They were from Africa but not black. The came from the Roman province of Mauritania which is now Morocco and (parts of) Algeria.

It is highly likely that they were Berbers, who are a mix of Arab and Southern European, so would have been light skinned.

Severus' anecdote about the 'Ethiops' is just that. Not evidence.

Not according to her DNA

Quote

The Beachy Head Lady or Beachy Head Woman is an ancient skeleton discovered in Beachy Head, East Sussex, England. The Beachy Head Lady lived during the Roman period, around 125 to 245 AD. DNA analysis of the woman found that although she was born in the Eastbourne area of Britain, her ancestry was Southern European, most likely from Cyprus.

Indeed started to irritate me so much I stopped looking.

I sought out an old movie (actually made in 1993) called, "And The Band Played On" although I had seen it before some years ago, and it was still so very relevant today.

It was about the start of the AIDS epidemic and the discovery of the HIV virus and it pulled no punches about the battle between the French and the Americans with regard to the discovery of the actual virus, although this was later on in the movie. It also covered the battle to get funding from the US Govt in order to fund research on it and possibly find a cure.
It starred Matthew Modine and Alan Alda and a great supporting cast and I have to say that it spanned the spectrum of cause/effect/blame which really made one think deeply about this whole disease.

What I found very moving was the final few frames where pics and names of well-known folk who had died of AIDS were shown, along with the famous song by Elton John.....but there is hope on the horizon because there are now drugs to treat this and they can be so effective that the virus is undetectable via all blood tests and folk can go on to live a normal life.

Yeah , i watched that and thought it okay.

Watching now:

Malice (2025, a 6 part thriller )

Despite a poor IMDb rating (5.6) am finding it entertaining.

Jack Whitehall in a serious role, although he does put plenty of sarcasm in, is very believable as someone going to great lengths to seek revenge on a rich American, his charm allows him to infiltrate the family.

David Duchovny as the arrogant American.

I'm so burnt out on British crime dramas except for one. And it's coming back next year for season 7.

I reckon Sean Penn will win an Oscar for this.

Thought he was superb.

I've been looking forward to this one.

BBC unveils major Death in Paradise shake-up in Beyond Paradise announcement

image.jpeg.00b074c26442c199e0fc897c46d60fef.jpeg

BBC viewers will see a slew of new faces as bosses confirm major casting shake-ups.

The BBC has revealed that a number of new faces will be introduced in the upcoming series of Death in Paradise and its spin-off, Beyond Paradise. The original murder mystery drama was introduced in 2011, where Ben Miller starred as DI Richard Poole, who led a team of detectives on the Caribbean island of Saint Marie. Its Devon-based series Beyond Paradise first aired in 2023, with Kris Marshall (played by Humphrey Goodman) investigating crimes in the sleepy town. For the last two years, both shows have aired annual Christmas specials, which fans can expect to see next month.

Full Story: EXPRESS

St. Marie with Philip from Rising Damp good.

Devon version with Kris Marshall deadly dull.

Think it's the exotic location that made the difference (to me anyway).

Return to Paradise in Australia also not good IMHO.

Project Hail Mary.  I read the book. It was outstanding: both funny and deeply moving.

And the movie is coming out March 26, 2026.  Can't wait!
