Pictures from raid.

In the late hours of January 6, at approximately 22:35 Pattaya’s Tourist Police and Immigration officials conducted a successful raid on an illegal gambling operation involving foreign nationals. The operation took place at a private room in Jomtien, Nong Prue, Bang Lamung District, Chonburi, located just two streets away from the local Immigration Office.

The raid was led by Pol. Lt. Col. Piyapong Ensarn, Chief of the Tourist Police Sub-division 4, Division 2, and Pol. Lt. Col. Sirachat Nutes, Deputy Chief of Pattaya Police Station. Coordinating efforts with officers from Pattaya Tourist Police, Chonburi Immigration Police, and Pattaya Police, the team acted on a tip-off from an informant.

The tip revealed that foreign nationals were covertly operating a gambling den, over a seemingly legitimate beer bar. Upon investigation, authorities discovered that the upper room had been modified exclusively for playing poker.

When officers stormed the premises, they found seven foreign nationals, hailing from Australia, Russia, the United States, and the United Kingdom, engaged in a poker game. Five Thai nationals were also present, including a dealer, assistants, and housekeepers.

Authorities confiscated poker tables, multiple decks of playing cards, and a sum of cash used in the gambling activities.

A total of 12 individuals, including both Thais and foreign nationals, were detained and taken to Pattaya Police Station for further legal proceedings. All evidence was also handed over to the investigative officers to proceed in accordance with the law.

The raid highlights the Pattaya authorities’ ongoing efforts to clamp down on illegal activities in the region, particularly those involving foreign nationals, in order to maintain law and order.

No immigration officers were compromised during the raid as it was after hours and not during lunch

Poker should only be classed as gambling if you suck at it, why the organizers/players had cash lying around beats me, playing cards are not illegal in Thailand.

Like many other establishments, I'm led to believe.

They would have got away with it if they had gone to gamble on horse racing.

Well actually there are restrictions. You need to check the facts before you spout off.

Could you tell me what they are?

As I said playing cards are available from your local 7/11,  as far as I know an individual is allowed to have 2 packs of cards in heir possession as long as it's under 120 playing cards, and they have the Thai stamp on them.

Whilst ignoring Thai activities.  Note again 'acting on a tip-off' - the source of any successes the Kwaistone Cops have: no police work necessary.

But having more than 2 decks of cards without a license is illegal.   Many years ago, because of a political situation, the police actually raided a Bridge Club event.    It caused an uproar because the "Man On Top" endorsed Bridge and was a pretty good player.  The only face saving technicality the police had to cover the raid was they had more than 2 decks of playing cards.

The 2 pack limit without special licence was what I believed (as you mentioned..... )  but I only read that after the notorious Bridge Club raid of some years ago......

Some elderly lady got locked up for some hours, and I believe the participants were held for a time then paid a 'fine' each  to be released. What a fiasco....

In theory, there were 32 players, so if each player had 2 packs of each there could have been up to 3840, the last pack I brought from 7/11 had 56 cards, if I remember rightly, 2 Jokers and 2 blanks with Thai on them, so if that was the case 3584 cards in total.
