I do believe alcohol especially as you get older weakens you 

Could you for example still drink heavy the night before and go to work the next day ?

I couldn't and I noticed red faces in older adults who drink ,red veins in their nose looking washed out

There is only so much brain equity unfortunately, ethanol kills brain equity.

I agree the older you are the worse it is for you.  Sure does not seem to be stopping people many bars are busy some busy in the early afternoon.

There is not much point in trying to identify just one thing that is bad for you.

Life style, diet, exercise regime, taking drugs (yes, cannabis/smoking as well), even genetics all get into the mix.

I am almost 74 and have two regular check ups every year. Work permit and life style.

I have been drinking alcohol daily for 60 years.

Too much when younger, not so much now.

Results from the medicals - very strong heart, could go on until I am 100.

Liver OK, but the rest........ oops.

Stage 4 COPD, Stage 3 kidney disease, bladder issues (prostate gone now) oh, and I was found to have 'inherited' gout when I was in my early 20's.

Usual old folk's tremors and forgetfulness - tryping (sic) is tricky these days.

Cannot exercise so much - cannot breath with the COPD but still do daily walks and running around looking after guests.

Still riding the ancient scooter- love going around the island on a sunny day - except in high season (now) and even go across to the mainland for a 'blast' now and again.

 

Which is more dangerous?

One drink per day, or the roads in Thailand.

Certainly shouldn't surprise anyone.  Thinking 1 or 2 drinks a day wasn't unhealthy or even considered healthy could have only been funded by alcohol groups.

 

Luckily never addicted, but certainly is habit forming.  I stopped indulging 'almost' completely.  Don't miss it at all.

 

Definitely a hard habit to break, as the marketing is very effective.

Alchohol was fun when younger, now I enjoy a glass or two in good comapany and dinners. 

 

Alchohol is not good for old men, who already have lifestyle problems and health challenges.

Breathing polluted air is going to be worse. I lived next door to a 90 year old woman back in the day who drank two bottles of stout a day and smoked. What about red wine which is said to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Moderation, healthy eating, exercise, positive attitude and happiness is what's needed. Plenty of people live a full life and drink alcohol.

Maybe ...but I found as in getting older ,it's zapping my energy the next day (beer) 

 

Although when I had a bad Flu a few months ago I took hot milk with Rum and helped me sleep and I felt much better the next day

People seems to get old her in Isaan who have lived with smoke all their lives, and Im sure some is more genetic resistant for smoke exposure than others, even they most of their life only lived on a bowl of rice, vegetables and very little meat their whole life.

Not many lao khao drinkers get old. That shts poison.

Maybe thats why most women live longer than men. There is for sure women who drink lao khao, but not as many as men.

Alcohol in any flavor is poisonous. Though from this perspective, people are free to live their lives as they please so long as they don’t bring harm to others while doing so which is the biggest problem with intoxicated people.

 I agree on quality, not quantity. Rod Stewart is still going strong and drinks a bottle of wine a day.

I had a tall can of beer the other day after months of not drinking anything. Made me feel good for an hour then made me feel worse than before the rest of the day. It may have been my last

you can drink and do drugs as long you have good genes and also have resources. Most people do not have that kind of resources and not able to go to rehab and clean up both body and mind. 

 

It helps to have an passion and a strong mind as well will to live.

 

Keith Richards, it is a miracle he is still alive, if he is real, and not just an rockn roll actor. Anyway, he is an legend who is still walking and even playing at an age of 81.

Liver and kidney according to the missus. Interestingly there's been quite a lot of diabetes related deaths around the village recently. As for alcohol being a poison, yep. Ethanol is a poison but the liver deals with it. The liver, however, can only do so much hence drinking in moderation. To say even one glass is harmful I guess it is in a way but overall the the liver can handle it. It's when someone drinks too much and/or too constantly that the liver has problems metabolizing ethanol.

I do not think it applies to everyone.  Knew the father of a friend who was a bartender for 40 years.  He drank almost everyday.  I once saw him drink at dinner two beers, half a bottle of wine and finished the night with Lemoncello(yes he was Italian).  He died peacefully at 88.  Also, was a combat photographer during WWII.  RIP. 

 

I drink two beers or a glass of wine with dinner several times a week and I am in my early 60's.  So far no isssues.  I have maintained this for almost 30 years.  On the otherhand I maintain a 22 BMI and BP 115/75.

Each person must find their own path to happiness.
I can’t help you with that.
For me it is good friends, a nice meal with some nice wine.

And laughter. Some if that I get from reading silly posts here.

To me, it is to have enough money, so I can do what I want, when I want even that doesnt mean owning an private jet and spend millions on holidays. It means being secure, and being able to live and healthy and sustainable life. Also be able to change plans and location when you feel enough is enough. Thats happiness. Having a meal with good friends, is great, but just a temporary feeling of comfort. 

 

A good lifepartner comes high up on my list, but economic secured comes first

Very few things done every day are a good thing. Habit is the life of an automaton. People don't understand how sensitive and how important the liver is. 

 

Daily drinking is usually a sign of extreme boredom, a lack of fulfillment or some deep seated, unresolved psychological issues.

And there we go, next whining.

Ever seen what is in your food? Ever aware what they use for chemicals growing your food?

You cant eat red meat, peanut butter, eggs and so on.

Spinach for instance is bad when reheated, nitrates to nitrites, not good.

However you can work in a chemical plant and have some "professional diseases".

What about working shifts? Even shifting normal time to summer time seems to be not healthy.

You can have "medicine", however working good for one dysfunction and creating another.

If that is not enough you can have corona or the latest new one MHPV or something like it.

 

No, we pick one thing and this time it is alcohol to be very bad and whine about it.
