There will be a massive inflow of fines, which fund the police operations.

Now that I come to think about, here in Pattaya every major road cross-section has already a police booth with an officer inside most of the day. So all they have to do is step outside and do their job.

Looking at the story and map, whatever the state of the driver, the Fortuna must have been travelling at extremely high speed to move the bike so far. Overtaking near or at a junction is against the law here, believe it or not, although people don't seem to observe care much here, either. It sounds probable that the bike was coming out of the minor soi but was unseen by the Fortuna driver, as the car he was overtaking blocked his line of sight. I've seen near misses like this thousands of times here. Unfortunately this was not a near miss. Tragic and unnecessary - RIP poor girl - hoping your friend will be OK. 

This Soi is one of the the most busy even when not 40 KM/H can be dangerous. One lane each direction speeding overtaking even at midnight is death waiting. Half Brit/Thai 19years driving a Fortuna spoiled learn how to drive but parents never taught him it is a weapon and use improperly it can and will kill.

You just have to wonder if this guy had to be somewhere in a hurry, was he just riddled with anxiety to the point where he couldn't control his driving, or was he just plain old Reckless, stupid, or drunk?

 

Regardless, his life is never going to be the same, once you take another human life in a reckless act, everything changes from that day forward. Needless to say the same can be said about the family of both of these gals. Such a tragic outcome, and so easily avoidable.

THe first thing you should do in an incident (if you are physically capable) is call the insurance company - they send an agent to the seen within minutes. THey act as an intermediary between you and other parties.... they also represent the interests of the insurance company. THey are likely to be better at collecting significant evidence too if it is to their advantage. Most motoring stats in Thailand are not collected by the police, they come from insurance companies and hospitals who are more interested in accurate recording of incidents.

So you realise that in this case the insurance my not have been notified - however they will eventually be making and receiving claims so they will want to get an accurate picture of what went on to protect their company against any claims. THis requires professional accident reports - whether they rely on the police or not is up to them - in most countries a forensic report will have been made that they can work from - they are unlikely to find anything from the scene of the accident much after the event as the evidence will have been cleaned away and destroyed.

The unfortunate situation in Thailand is that the companies will have to rely a lot on incomplete "amateurish" police reports. (and of course the hopitals) - the police are used to being overly involved in the judicial roles.

Hi Steven. Yes. When I moved to Soi Khao Talo, Pattaya, some 15 years ago, I took the Honda 110 Wave for a ride. 

While enjoying my ride, some moron pulled out from a slower oncoming car.

Thankfully my bike riding skills saved me from a head on. Lesson learned & RIP to the youngie.🙃🙃
