700 Stray Dogs Starving in Thai Landfill - Rabies Fears Rise

In a dire situation in Chachoengsao province, over 700 stray dogs are starving at a local landfill, raising fears of a potential rabies outbreak as temperatures rise. Residents are calling on the government to urgently address the growing crisis.

On January 28, reporters visited the landfill in Mueang Hua Samrong, Plang Yao district, a remote area hemmed in by forests and accessible only by dirt roads. They found dogs in groups of 20 to 30, looking thin and scared. Many were retreating into the grass, and there were numerous dog carcasses, likely due to disease and hunger.

Pavannapat, a compassionate 49-year-old local, has spent her own money for the past year to feed these strays with rice, kibble, and water, costing her about 1,500 baht (US$45) on each visit. Despite her efforts, she can no longer manage the ever-growing dog population.

Faced with the rainy season, Pavannapat set up tarps to shelter the dogs. But as the hot season approaches, her worries increase about rabies spreading among the dogs and into nearby communities.

She is pleading for immediate action from the authorities to manage the stray dog issue and prevent a rabies outbreak before it gets worse. The situation demands urgent attention from government agencies to provide a solution, as Pavannapat’s personal resources are stretched thin, and the logistical challenges are overwhelming.

Thailands misguided love affair with stray dogs.

problem is the love is too short-lived!  just looking at the picture , I see some beautiful lookiing dogs.  I am a dog lover since a child but I have had many pets and never abandoned one!  One older daughter in the US takes in abandoned dangerous dogs mostly huge in size, never been bitten and at any one time has 5-8 dogs living with her and her husband too loves the dogs.   I note than now, people are in BKK are supposed to register their dogs and it should become a naionwide practice and then strays need to be neutered to begin the shrinking strays as the govt finding a stray can check for the owner and a large enough fine for abandaoning the pet should be levied.  Citizens need to have some responsibility which seems to be lacking in many areas still.  IMHO anyway but I still love it here.

Always amazes me how people are so soft hearted and 'compassionate' about dogs and will describe themselves as animal lovers, while at the same time eating animals and supporting a cruel and often barbaric meat industry. They always say there is a difference between domestic pets and livestock, but the only difference is in their minds, they are all animals. Pigs, cows and sheep are no different to dogs they are all mammals. These dogs are vermin and should be done away with.

I find it a bit strange that a man that kills a dog that kills his chickens get 2 months in jail for ANIMAL CRUELTY while probably millions of street dogs are suffering all over Thailand without anyone lifting a finger!! That is a national cruelty against animals!!! Shame on you Thailand!!

City slickers won't get it but if you live in a village there is a guy shows up with a large cage on his truck and trades plastic buckets for unwanted dogs. They take them through Laos to Vietnam where they end up on the barbie.

She's got zero common sense.  She is only exacerbating the problem.

The authorities need to put them down,  then start on the soi's in Bangkok.

Are there sheep, pigs and cows starving at the rubbish dump also?

Maybe invite the Koreans and Vietnamese down for a bar-b-q?

The picture in the op is a stock pic and not one of the mangy mutts at the landfill.

Many expats have taken the task to take care of this problem:

- Pay for having the dogs neutered

- Pay for having the dogs vaccinated against rabies and other canine diseases

- Pay for food to have the dogs in good shape and ready for adoption

- Pay for dog shelters, etc…

Meanwhile most locals have no consideration for the stray dogs as well as the different levels of government. I say most locals because some take the time to feed them and leave buckets of water on site.

So don’t hit me with the argument of affordability and lack of resources. Resources are available for cell phone plans, beer and hong thong.

What would dogs do if there were 700 humans with rabies on their garbage patch? Yes, they would exterminate us. So, export to Gietnam or Korea.

How stupid  are people , Feeding  Roaming Soi dogs at a rubbish dump.

About time that this government get their priorities  right and put People First and  cull all those suffering Dogs  before it's Too late  and something Bad happens.

Your avatar says it all so why don't you go back to where you came from instead of criticizing someone who has compassion for animals unlike yourself.

Unfortunately, people like you also breed which is the main reason the world is as screwed up as it is.

Ah the usual doggie lover showing their hatred of anyone who does not agree with doggie worship. Soi dogs are vermin, some countries have the courage to deal with them such as cat loving Turkey but even there the stray problem was not as great as it is here. Compassion? where is that it letting diseased vermin stalk the sois causing all sorts of risks? Compassion would involve putting them down in a mass cull to stop the breeding and suffering. I don't think me going back where I came from is the answer, the answer is dog licensing with chipping the mutts and mass extermination of these unfortunate pests.

The problem will resolve itself. Malnutrition leading to immuno-compromise, then a wave or two of Parvovirus or Leptospirosis.

Rabies would have the added benefit of getting rid of a few of the kind hearted do-gooders.

Win Win

I am a dog owner , I love my dogs , and believe that pet ownership is a wonderful thing.

However the response in this country to stray and dangerous dogs is irresponsible, ridiculous, and dangerous.

the dogs are a pest,  as are soi dogs,  but you already know that.

They often hate to put them down.

Even after some viciously attacked  and killed people.

Such do-gooders  approach only makes things worse, than better.

As they simply cannot continue to feed and support them endlessly.

Because of course if you feed them they are going to leave.  To rephrase the story "A nice lady has 700 pets" good work.

Or at least desex them.

So their overall population will not grow.

And start to decline.

But they often hate it either.
