I love the internet but it's filled with so much garbage and lies now

Featured Replies

We had this plaque since day one, and I remember my history lessons from my schooldas, where you get the big lines, and impression of the black and white truths, but what we didnt learn, was everything they didnt teach us.

Continues the same way today, but at the same time bombarded with conflicting news and live stories in real time.

Even presented with hard core facts, many still choose to only believe one side of the stories blindly.

  • Lies and lying are now accepted behavior from political leaders.   Who remembers when John Profumo was forced to resign from the British ministry for lying to Parliament in 1963? How likely

The EV you are so proud of would not be possible without scientists and engineers.

Thanks to science, you probably have a longer life expectancy, although it seems to be wasted on you.

That's one opinion, that all can agree with.

But you do realize, I was referring to the 'false science' people quote, that is basically 'lies & garbage' as pointed out in the OP.

Not the basic science the innovators used for the achievements produced over the centuries.  Try not to twist my thoughts to change my obvious narrative.

I would say more than 95% of what's online is garbage, lies and disinformation so we simply have to increase the quality of our nonsense meters to the point where we can see nonsense from a distance, and just ignore it completely. The problem is when people give nonsense credence, and when people start quoting nonsense and if it is truth.

Certainly on AN. The Russian troll bots are in full force and welcomed for generating clicks.

Honestly, some of the red hat supporters (PARTICULARLY the ones who are NOT US citizens!) make me think there must be more than a few in their midst.

Quote-"make me think there must be more than a few in their midst."

And the point of the Russian's trying to influence the readers of ASEAN is ...???

honestly --any chance of moving this to the joke page..........

Its click bait.

Rubbish stories or news, but they collect your details once you open the story.

IP address, mailing address.

Etc etc.

Its not fantasy.

It actually happens.

Even this site bombards you with advertising.

And if you put Adblocker on it tells to turn off.

The internet use to be a great source of correct and proper information.

Sadly,  crooks, thieves and scammers have moved in and now nothing can be believed or considered correct.

Honestly,     this world is such a dismal place when you can't even accept the information for your school project as being honest.

The world is full of scammers ....  and it's about time the governments got serious about it.

But but >>>> Social media platforms have now liberated the audiences and permitted "free speech".

The new democracy dictates (lol)  you need take personal responsibility to determine sh.T from clay.

But  some social media  is  restricted . Does it  contain too much truth ?

Your narrative appeared to disrespect genuine scientists.

My mistake for misinterpreting what you said, I apologize.

So the users need to have a proper net literacy; ability to check out what is true and what isn't.

It is often up to the level of viewers' knowledge.

I agree with the problem of lots of false information.

I think most of the time we don't need accurate information on short notice. It would be good if we get them, but not tragic if we don't get them.

Everything we see on the internet or TV or written somewhere is maybe correct and maybe not. This is what we should always have in mind. We read or see a plane crashed. And then we hear x people died. And the reason for the crash was x. Is all that correct? Maybe. Probably a plane crashed. Just now or some time ago? Not sure. Did rescue operations find already z dead people? Or do they just assume all are dead? And does anybody after a few hours really know why it happened? Speculation, maybe, guesses. But facts?

With some things I just wait. I.e. with that plane crash in DC, let's read the news in a week or two. Then the information will be likely a lot more accurate than now.

And check the news on different sources.

I think the biggest giveaway for incorrect information is always when people are totally one-sided. Trump is to blame for everything. Or Trump has always good ideas. No! There is extreme seldom black and white. There is a lot of grey. And when people behave like they know everything and for them the world is black and white then we should realize that we can't trust these people. Move on! Watch or read what others say.

Yes polarization is a problem. I am never in agreement with everything any party stands for. I agree with more of what the Dems have to say but that does not mean that the GOP doesn't have a few good points.

No ,we need to keep the government out, if they are in control we will only get what they want us to see. Bad enough with the corporate news outlets. They have managed to close off most Russian news sources calling it propaganda while calling their own propaganda news.

It's only going to get 'worse' with the encroaching use of AI.

Information not derived from truths and evidence, but from people's opinions and from those who see advantage in promoting mis-information.

Promises, promises .........

Back to the OP,

The internet is the same as it's always been (but faster), movies, tv shows, music, books all free. Nobody is forcing you to read opinions/stories you may not like on social media.

Would be more boring for you guys if a number of suddenly quit, not many real new members who are active, si it is a slow death for the active part of the forum. Already registered less activity here, so it is not only me thinking the same, it is already in progress.

Well, you are obviously one I have stepped on the toes in here, and very representative for the old grumpy men, who cant change, or relocate. Stuck in Thailand and here.

So thank you for your compliment, I appreciate it very much. Especially you actually take your valuable time and energy to say it in a way, which makes me smile.

Anyway, it is just a forum, thats all

Have you no shame or even personal pride?

Move on and at least find or create a new conspiracy theory to obsess over.

With you in charge the frogs don't stand a chance.
