Condo in Nana Area Used for Illegal Rentals and Prostitution, MP Says

MP Phanthira Nwamjerm from the People's Party has exposed a troubling situation unfolding in a condominium in Bangkok's Nana area, which is reportedly being rented out for prostitution on a daily basis.

 

This disclosure follows numerous complaints from local residents about black women frequently escorting different men into the building, raising concerns over safety and prompting some residents to move out.

 

Mr Phanthira has urged the government to amend the Condominium Act to enhance the decision-making power of unit owners, while also suggesting that the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society register platforms like Airbnb to ensure that foreigners renting out properties pay appropriate taxes.

 

During his tenure as an MP, Mr Phanthira received several complaints about foreign nationals renting condos daily, causing disturbances such as loud parties and drug use, specifically with cannabis. Such activities often lead to police intervention.

He noted that Arab nationals visiting a nearby hospital frequently opt for condo rentals instead of hotels, leading to signs within some buildings discouraging daily renters due to safety concerns. Some properties have even resorted to facial recognition technology for enhanced security.

 

The root of the issue lies in the current Condominium Act, which allows a small minority of residents—just a third—to influence decisions, necessitating a legal overhaul to give all stakeholders a voice.

 

In addition to the safety concerns, complaints have surfaced regarding the renting of condos to sex workers, particularly black women seen entering the building with different men. Such occurrences, although indirect, have created an atmosphere of unease among permanent residents, questioning whether they need to relocate for their peace of mind.

 

Phanthira has raised concerns about the ineffective enforcement of current laws which fail to safeguard residents adequately, especially considering proposals to allow foreigners to own up to 75% of condominium units.

 

This issue of foreign ownership may further marginalise Thai residents who are currently already struggling under the 49% ownership cap due to the use of nominees by foreign owners.

 

Phanthira has called for proactive measures from the authorities, particularly concerning daily condo rentals, questioning whether immigration laws are being properly enforced. He suggests random inspections of condos, especially those along the railway lines, beyond reacting to media reports.

 

Moreover, Phanthira addressed the daily rental practices via Airbnb, highlighting the need for registration and taxation compliance by foreign property owners profiting from such rentals, reported 3Plus NEWS.

 

He urged the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society to work towards a regulatory framework that ensures these individuals contribute taxes for their business activities in Thailand.

Ignoring the silliness,  the world has an issue with short term rentals. As a condo occupant i have a problem with short time rentals. If I wanted to live in a hotel, I would have a room in hotel. A lot of short time renters party and don't care about the property. I chose a condo for the quieter, relaxed environment and short time rentals interfere. I dont think condos should be rented for less then 1 month stays.

Only a single condo in the Nana area? For the record, these sort of 'troubling situations' happen in MANY areas and, dare I say, in most parts of the country. Nonsense. Its not the condominium act that is the problem,

Its lack of enforcement of the law.

Short term rentals under 30 days are illegal. Condominiums should only have to report it to the local authorities with the room numbers and they should take action.

Then they could get the taxes, and fine the owners.

How are they going to get the taxes if they do nothing. The condos are not going to get or pay the taxes.

Two completely separate issues. Short term rentals are it's own problem, but groups of Africans renting condo units long term and using them as base of operations has been growing exponentially. In my condo and a couple of other condos nearby there are many  Africans now. Mostly sex workers, pimps, and drug dealers. Immigration would have a field day here if they just bothered to look into it. This is a recent thing - back when I lived here before Covid I barely saw any Africans in the building.

 

To be clear - the problem is not that they're African - the problem is that they're prostitutes/pimps/drug dealers and taking over otherwise very nice condos.

It is mainly Omni Tower. Daily fights. Daily incidents involving police. Daily immigration police raids. Not just Africans. The article doesn't mention it, but lots of Uzbeks are in there too, but they aren't as troublesome.

First one a good guess. For second I'd also bet on one towards the end of the soi on left side too going to the park. Mostly of Africans bring customers there.

From what I understand, most of them were living in Omni Tower, and many were also using it as a base of short-time operations. The majority of long-term residents, or rather, those renting month-to-month in that building, seem to be Arabs. However, I believe many of the sex worker women there have been forced to move out recently due to issues with the police.

 

That said, the main building being used for short-time tricks appears to be Nana Condo. You can check it out on Google Maps. At night, dozens of Africans, ladyboys, and Vietnamese women line up along Soi Nana, just meters from that building. Thus, a lot of them take their customers there.

 

I’d be surprised if any building at the far end of Soi Nana were popular for short-times. It’s too far, and I doubt many of their customers would be willing to walk that distance. Besides the Nana Condo, there are also several small short-time hotels within meters of that area where the women are all standing around and hooking customers. So there’s really no need for anyone to trek to the end of the Soi for a short-time room.
