The Enigma of Trump Supporters’ Blind Devotion: A Modern Social Phenomenon

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

Most people possess the ability to judge their political leaders with at least some level of objectivity, acknowledging both their strengths and weaknesses and to hold them responsible for their obvious missteps and poor judgment. Yet, Trump’s followers seem to exist in a bubble, a flawed hemisphere if you will, having abandoned all critical thinking faculties and surrendering their judgment to a man whose words and actions are accepted without question, even when he does things that clearly harm their own personal well being.

Fact and fiction, right and wrong, consequence and reality, the things most humans hold dear and apply to various aspects of everyday life all become irrelevant in the face of their unwavering allegiance. Even when his policies drive up inflation, increase unemployment, weaken consumer protections, dismantle government oversight, harm allies, weaken political alliances around the world, or threaten economic stability, his base remains steadfast. Their loyalty is impervious to evidence, detached from rational self-interest, and more akin to prostrating themselves to a supernatural faith than what is viewed as a normal level of political support for a public servant. What drives this kind of devotion? Is it ideological? Psychological? Or is it simply the human tendency to seek certainty in an unstable world, even at the cost of not believing in truth itself?

Such blind allegiance is not without historical precedent. The fervor surrounding authoritarian figures of the past, from the early days of the Nazi regime to the rise of countless demagogues, all followed similar patterns, merely an elevation of a flawed mortal into a near-mythic figure, beyond reproach and beyond reason. What makes this phenomenon particularly perplexing is that this is all unfolding in an era of unprecedented access to information, where deception should, in theory, be more easily recognized and exposed. Instead, we see a willingness, perhaps even a need, to embrace comforting fictions over uncomfortable truths.

Alas, all authoritarian and political cults eventually collapse under the weight of their own contradictions, and this movement will be no exception. A few decades from now, perhaps even far sooner, it will be little more than a historical footnote, maybe even reduced to a largely forgettable meme. But for now, it remains one of the most bewildering spectacles of our time, a testament to both the fragility of reason and the enduring power of belief in something that brings more harm than good to humanity, unmoored from scrutiny or reality.

The enigma of the lefts blind devotion: how socialists ended up on the wrong side of history

Apart from Trump's base, which is smaller IMO than the media would have us believe, that is BS. Had the Dems not put a cackling idiot up for POTUS they would still be in the W H.

The voters had a clear choice between two less than ideal candidates- Donald who didn't start any wars, and wanted to stop illegal immigration, or more of the Biden/ Dems woke insanity. They chose the less bad of two bad candidates.

If any are living in a bubble it is the anti Trump mob that imagine that had Trump lost, we'd all be singing Kumbaya round the campfire.

Not just blind- unable to understand reality. They'd have voted for Biden if he had been the candidate.

How do you explain what happened with Biden then?

Thousands upon thousands of people all didn't see his mental decline? You had industry media corporation education medical etc all backing him.

The rest of your post is driven through your own personal ideology and disdain for the right. At present I feel more disdain for the left. After 911 I felt the same then as I do now...for the right.

Most politics is a charade to keep common people distracted. Rich

men and women telling other rich men and women how they are the corrupt ones. Classic.

Snore. Let's get to the culling.

Yes I'll gladly volunteer if it means a different world other than this monotonous back and forth while most humans are suffering.

The abject ignorance of MAGAs never ceases to amaze. As dumb as one thinks they are, a MAGA will say, “hold my beer” and go about exceeding the lowest expectations.

What is Socialist about lefties? Do have any clue whatsoever what you are even trying to say?

Biden’s CAPITALIST economy dwarfed his predecessor, both in terms of GDP growth and employment/job creation. GDP growth under Biden was the best since the late 1990s under Clinton. Biden presided over 41 straight months of unemployment below 4%, a 64 year record.

ALREADY under his successor, unemployment ticked upward, as Friday’s release showed. The Atlanta Fed, which under Biden had forecast a +2.3% 1st Quarter 2025, adjusted its forecast last Friday to a -1.3% 1st Q 2025, because of the economic policies of 47 and the uncertainty created by his flip-flopping every hour or so on tariffs.

The deficit is ready to explode as forecasts see the coming tax cuts adding an additional $900 billion to the yearly budget deficit.

Every country has some Socialist policies, such as national defense, the highway system, FDIC insurance, food and drug inspections, etc. What other “socialism” did “lefties” add and how did it impact growth?

The same weaknesses that drive people to believe in deities is what drives the losers who are MAGA to worship him.

Weak people don't like randomness, nor are they capable of accepting responsibility for their own failures. They gravitate toward entities that claim control over events or sell them pie-in-the-sky fantasies or especially tell them failures are others' fault. Simple answers for simple minds.

All of those things resonate with the forlorn, and when a single figure is the source of all the ego salving, then everything that entity does or says is infallible. In religion, we have the supposed bad guy Satan, the one who tempts you to lie or cheat, and he is the epitome of all evil. The good guy, on the other hand, is supposedly omnipotent, which means it is responsible for tsunamis and childhood cancer and all sorts of horrors....but that entity's cult claims "Master Plan" or "works in mysterious ways". When it comes to evil, Satan is a mere posseur.

So with the President, we have a guy who----as an example---stole highly classified documents, claimed he declassified them with his mind, but also claimed the FBI planted them. MAGAs believed all of it, despite the contradictions. He sent his goobers to hang the Vice President, but when they got arrested and convicted, he called their attack a lovefest, the terrorists "hostages", and he pardoned the scum. When he mouths off with his increasing insanity, saying things that either make no sense or are wildly contradictory, the cult parses it as if it has the "hidden meaning" of a Nostradamus quatrain or a message from "Q" of QAnon fame.

Just yesterday he did what is now the norm for him: take both sides of the same issue.

Russia carried out a massive drone attack on Ukraine. The clown's first comment was, "I don't blame him. He wants peace". (Now how idiotic is that. Putin started the war and is welcome to go home anytime, so clearly he doesn't want peace; he wants Ukraine.) Perhaps seeing his dream of a Nobel Peace Prize disappearing as the war heats up, POTUS then condemned the attack and spoke about new sanctions.

Sane and intelligent people get dizzy with all the flip flops. MAGAs think it's manna from heaven.

A cult is a cult is a cult. Most religions, QAnon, Scientology, MAGA....are refuges for the weak minded and losers.

It seems that most Trump supporters on this forum are either not American and or don’t live in the U.S. As a result, they have no real skin in the game, since none of his destructive policies will affect them or will be felt by them personally. This allows them to continue indulging in the fantasy of Trump’s outlandish vision for a utopian America, making them more the exception than the rule. But in America, where people are already starting to feel the pain directly, the tide is now turning.

Trump’s approval ratings have already turned negative. According to FiveThirtyEight, his average approval rating dropped from +8.3 on January 24 to -0.3 on March 4. Currently, 47.9% of Americans disapprove, while 47.6% approve. Only slightly in negative territory, but enough to tip the balance into a situation that is historically irrecoverable.

By comparison, during his first term, his net approval turned negative within 15 days into his presidency, and he never recovered from it. This time, it took closer to 45 days. Perhaps his supporters were more hopeful this time around, but rising costs and economic concerns seem to be driving this new shift already. Additionally, many Americans are unhappy with his handling of Ukraine, and there is even some dissent within his own constituency on the matter.

Historically, once a president’s national approval ratings turn negative, they almost never recover. The only modern exception was George W. Bush, whose approval rebounded after 9/11. Without that rally around the flag effect, he likely wouldn’t have won a second term.

This evolving situation now suggests that a shift is already developing within Trump's cult following in America, where he has already lost a portion of his support base and, based on history, it will only continue to crater further from here.

An example of Maga stupidity

Trump claimed in his speech the other day that the government supposedly spent millions in research to make mice transgender.

But it isn't transgender, it's transgenic. By inserting a new gene, (transgene) into a mouse embryo, transgenic mice can be manipulated to carry specific genetic mutations that imitate human diseases like cancer, diabetes, etc, allowing for the study of disease mechanisms and testing of potential therapies.

Fact check: Are millions of people older than 100 — including some older than 160 — collecting Social Security?

Trump said: “We’re also identifying shocking levels of incompetence and probable fraud in the Social Security program for our seniors.”

This is false.

Fact check: Trump says car plants are "opening up all over the place"

This is mostly false.

No automaker has announced a new plant since Trump took office and began instituting new tariffs. Reuters reported that Honda planned to produce 210,000 Civics in Indiana instead of Mexico, but the company hasn’t made a public announcement.

Fact check: Trump claims illegal immigration "destroyed" Aurora, Colo., and Springfield, Ohio

This is false.

Springfield and Aurora have long been some of Trump’s favorite targets when it comes to examples of American cities he likes to nod to as being overrun by migrants, though he often misrepresents the situations there.

Fact check: Is Canada, along with Mexico, to blame for the fentanyl crisis?

Trump said of Canada and Mexico: “They’ve allowed fentanyl to come into our country at levels never seen before, killing hundreds of thousands of our citizens and many very young, beautiful people, destroying families. Nobody has ever seen anything like it.”

This is partly false.

While fentanyl comes across the border from Mexico in significant numbers, Canada is hardly to blame for the crisis. In the 2024 fiscal year, fentanyl seizures at the northern border were just 43 pounds, according to Customs and Border Protection data.

Health

Fact check: Trump says more children are being diagnosed with autism

Trump said: “As an example, not long ago, and you can’t even believe these numbers, 1 in 10,000 children had autism. One in 10,000, and now it’s 1 in 36. There’s something wrong. One in 36, think of that, so we’re going to find out what it is.”

This needs context.

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has pointed to vaccines to explain the substantial rise in autism diagnoses in recent decades, which have ballooned from an estimated 1 in 150 children in 2000 to 1 in 36 today.

But the science is clear that vaccines don’t cause autism.

International

Fact check: Trump claims U.S. is spending much more on Ukraine than Europe

Trump said: “Europe has sadly spent more money buying Russian oil and gas than they have spent on defending Ukraine by far. Think of that. They’ve spent more buying Russian oil and gas than they have defending. And we’ve spent perhaps $350 billion, and they’ve spent $100 billion. And we have an ocean separating us, and they don’t. And Biden has authorized more money in this fight than Europe has spent.”

This is mostly false.

From Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022 to last December, the United States had allocated $114.2 billion in aid to Ukraine, according to the Kiel Institute, which is tracking aid to Ukraine. That’s not more than Europe spent: Those nations allocated more than $132.3 billion, with plans to allocate more.

Polling

Fact check: Is the share of Americans who think the country is on "right" track at a record high?

Trump said: “For the first time in modern history, more Americans believe that our country is headed in the right direction than the wrong direction.”

This is false.

While he doesn’t cite his source, it seems likely he’s pointing to a recent Rasmussen Reports poll showing that 47% say America’s on the “right track.”

Rasmussen is a right-wing poll that regularly partners with conservative authors and outlets to sponsor its polling. And it’s controversial — the polling aggregation site FiveThirtyEight removed the poll from its averages last year over concerns about its partisanship and its methodology.

Ignorance on display yet again. Amazing.

The last 7 polls prior to election by Rasmussen gave him a 1 to 3 point lead. He won by 1.5 points so they were amongst the most ACCURATE polls.

I really can't see the sense of alienating allies with tariffs, and wrecking your own economy with them as well.

Already, Kentucky bourbon makers have lost $1 billion in sales to Canada. Converting allies to someone who wants to punch you in the mouth is insane.

The DOGE scythe is cutting down Republicans along with Democrats. There is nothing selective about it.

How do MAGA's rationalize such actions?
