Putin wants and end to the war but with the Kursk salient collapsing I wouldn't be surprised that once Ukraine has lost this completely, which is coming soon, that Putin moves into the Sumy Oblast in retaliation. I note you say 'defences'. So you accept that Ukraine is defending itself against an aggressor, an invader? 

In fact, later posts report Putins demands that Ukraine should promise not to do this. Although he makes no promises not to build up his attacking/invading forces.
