A four-year-old girl was rushed to hospital after accidentally shooting herself in the thigh while playing with a homemade gun she found in her father’s bedroom.

 

Police in Phra Samut Chedi District, Samut Prakan, were alerted to the incident at around 11:00 on 1 April and arrived at a two-storey townhouse in Ladda Village, where they found the injured child, identified as Nattanida, crying in pain outside the house. She had suffered a gunshot wound to her right thigh, with the bullet lodged inside. Rescue workers provided emergency first aid before transporting her to a nearby hospital.

 

The girl’s stepfather, Mr. Panawit, 28, was seen comforting her at the scene. Inside the house, officers discovered a disassembled homemade pen gun along with a .38 calibre bullet and a spent round, all stored in a plastic container.

 

According to Parinya, 16, a relative who was present at the time, the young girl had been playing with two other children, an eight-year-old boy and another four-year-old girl, when the incident occurred. He recalled hearing a loud bang from inside the house while he was in his bedroom submitting schoolwork online. Rushing out, he found Nattanida on the floor, bleeding, with the pen gun lying nearby. The other two children were in shock, crying hysterically.

 

Parinya explained that the weapon had been stored in a drawer in the child’s parents’ bedroom. It had allegedly been left there by a friend of her stepfather, who feared he might use it in anger. While playing, Nattanida reportedly found the plastic box containing the gun, took it out, and attempted to assemble it. The gun accidentally discharged, firing a bullet into her thigh.

 

Police have confiscated the firearm for further examination and are investigating whether charges should be brought against the stepfather or others involved in the weapon’s storage. Officers will also interview the family at the hospital as part of the ongoing investigations.

It's code for how much money they can hand over. If enough then no charges if not enough then gets charged. Am I being too cynical?

 if it wasn't "locked in a safe"  "unloaded"  then it's laying around the house ..   period

Kid shot by what is almost certainly an unregistered gun. Should politicians send thoughts and prayers or actually do something?
