French Tourist in Critical Condition After Zebra Crossing Accident

Unfortunately, some people are inexperienced about this place

they think people here will stop.  Really, in Thailand it is up to the pedestrian to make sure it is 100% clear before crossing.  Just the way it is.

I was crossing a zebra in kanchanaburi a few years ago. First 2 lane of traffic stopped but when almost over idiot in the 3rd lane thought he would just carry on, ended up on the bonnet, luckily he was not going very fast. Near us they have red lights at a zebra and seconds signs for people to cross, most still wont stop

In the early hours? Lone pedestrian and lone car yet the pedestrian expects the car to stop. Just wait until the car has passed then cross.    French guys also probably looked the wrong way.

Most of the zebra crossings here on Samui are so faded that they are difficult to see in the day time. Not helped by the idiots that park on them (where the paint is a bit more bright) as they ha

Thai's are very polite until they get behind the wheel of a car or on a motor bike. Instead of selectively

harassing foreigners on motor bikes, as is very common on Beach Road in front of the police headquarters in Pattaya, the Thai police could balance their budget by ticketing every THAI driver who refused  stop for someone is a marked crosswalk. If the ticked every offender and fined them only 100 baht they could pocket enough bribe money

to put their kids through college or they could even turn the money in at their headquarters.

The major underlying problem is that THAIS ARE TERRIBLE DRIVERS>

French guys also probably looked the wrong way. Used to cars coming from the left, and not Marine Le Pen's far right right.

Unless it is a one way street, cars pass on both sides of the road in every country in the world. Pedestrians should therefore observe traffic from both directions!

Looking at the state of the car - I am not a forensic road accident expert but must have been doing some serious speed to cause that much damage to a car with a human.

Sometimes, some of them don't stop but normally they do.

Don't think you could drive away after that!

when will they start enforcing the traffic laws here?  oh, i forgot that would mean loss of face

Time to put a series of speed bumps before pedestrian crossings and stop signs. I don't mean ones that make tyre noise. Should be type if you go over at any faster than 30kph you are going need mechanical repairs.

Traffic light don't work as we know.

Speed limits need to be max 20kph at crossings all the time.

I been a driver most my life, trucks and taxi business.

Having to slow down sucks, but morons here definitely need something to make them slow down.

I see just as many foreigners running through them as I do Thais. Especially when there are no lights with a countdown. Sad but true.

This incident underlines the necessity for safety measures at zebra crossings, including installing adequate lighting, clear warning signs, and flashing signals to enhance pedestrian safety.

Forgive me if I am mistaken, but was there not an outcry several months ago when a prominent doctor was killed on a crossing. They were howling from the roof of Government house saying we will make all crossings clearer, safer, and improve education of drivers..........quick as a flash........bugger all is done......until the next fatality.......and the next.......ad infinitum.

Only because of the damage to to his car made it impossible to see where he was going 🤷🏼

Hope he's OK fair play to the driver for stopping and helping rare that happens, foreigners sometimes think that Zebra crossings are the same as their own country like cars must stop if someone steps on one, however I think most Thai drivers think of it more as a starting grid on a formula one track.

The Highway Code of Thailand is very similar to the UK one and it clearly states that drivers must stop if someone is on the crossing waiting to cross, sadly Thais have little knowledge of road rules and even less of where the brake is so they think that impact is the correct way to stop.

The damage to his car would be difficult to explain. !!

At night, using the torch on your mobile phone might help to let people see you when crossing the road. Otherwise wait until there is a large enough space to cross. Doesn't work in major cities, mind you.

Good idea, but do you think the Thai death riders will stop?

If Zebra crossings pedestrians haven't got right of way on the road then whats the point of having them? F*** Thai drivers.

The driver clearly didn't see him.

If it was a Thai doctor student a claim of millions would be fined, but now it is only a French tourist.....

Thais never stop at zebra crossings, even when kids are trying to cross...

An utter disgrace imo.

One writer wrote in one of his books about Thailand and Southeast Asia that the Traffic rules and regulations book in Thailand is a very old, rotting book, with it's pages full of mold and many pages are missing, plus this book is actually locked in a basement where nobody ever goes...

I dont think he had much options apart from stopping look at the damage to his car, difficult to drive at night with a broken windscreen

well I have seen it and I did not have to digging around in a cellar, it was shown to me when I went for my test and licence, and it is there for Thais to read but they don’t and nobody cares.

way back when we was kidzzzz ..   there was always tv commercials pounding it into your head

or simply put get your head out of your a** and pay attention before you cross

Not suppose to victim blame, but still amazes how people can't see the cars or MBs driving on the road ... or expect them to stop.

If I can see the French guy crossing from the above screen shot, surely the driver with his lights on can see him ???? Does the victim have to pay his own  hospital costs in such cases ??

As I tell my Thai wife. Zebra crossings are a waste of paint in Thailand. They are 99% ignored. Wonder what they teach at the Thai drivers exam to get a licence. Do they  pull ropes for left and right turns and push wooden pedals indoors pretending they are driving? Believe it or not they DO. As I had to when I wanted a Thai licence in 2013 at the Buriram licence testing centre? Why do they not at least do Australian testing standards. Imagine that. Thousands less deaths of their own people.  Of course you need the RTP to enforce the rules. That won't happen in my life time. Such is life in Thailand!

Would think driver's insurance would handle that, since in crosswalk.
