I had the idea the other day of driving my Ford Transit from London to Thailand.

I could fly back to  London, then hit the road and drive back to Thailand.

Some countries could be a bit dodgy, I thought. So with the help of Google Gemini, I asked the question.

Safest route to drive from London to Thailand.

Reply came back, and I thought maybe not !!

Another new member posting inane rubbish - who'd have thought? Must just be a coincidence.

Bringing a vehicle into Thailand? Nightmare and likely impossible for a Farang. Forget it!

Easily done with some advance planning.

Tempory import is a thing and many do it.

The paperwork to enter and exit each country on the way must be a nightmare.

While 'physically possible'   its impossible due to 'human / political' reasons...

The last time this was 'nearly' possible was in the 1960's and undertaken by Harold Stephens, Albert Podell who wrote the following book (below)...

If I remember correctly they had to bypass Myanmar and ferry their car from Bangladesh to Thailand, and then continue...

Thats not quite driving 'from UK to Thailand'... I think they've had to circumnavigate some of the Middle East via shipping...

Op wanted to drive from UK to Thailand, there are countries which cannot be driven through which make that impossible.

ohh ok.. so they did not leave from the UK and enter Thailand at some point....

Righto.

I asked Gemini a slightly different question, how long would it take to travel from England to Thailand by road.

The answer was several months minimum.

Flight time London to Bangkok 12 hours.

IMO the OP is a masochist.

I suspect the Op is considering this not from the point of view of getting to the destination, but from the point of view of experiencing the journey.....

... without all the potential paperwork issues, it could be quite a blast...

It used to be a common thing in the 60s. London to Sydney overland, dog and all! The vehicle of choice was a VW bus....Picking  up slabs of hashish in Afghanistan and then selling it in London or Sydney.

Not sure of present day situation; but back in 2015 driving through China required a guide which was often shared by overlander groups to reduce cost.

Example UK to Thailand route during this period.

I think it would be an amazing trip, but a little more difficult now with that thing going on in Ukraine.

Yes. I wanted to do south america after Che Guavara film but too much hassle.

Chiang Mai to Hat Yai return is good enough.

And a lot smaller & quicker to do, though not sure that's a good thing, as surely not as "majestic".

Nothing real 'world class' here in TH.

I just thought it would be fun. It's a long trip, but I could bring more of my stuff, and having a van here would be handy.

Transporting scooters about and plants to and from the plot of land the Mrs bought.

And my Transit has aircon and cruise control.

Plus it would save flying back to London then selling the rest of my stuff and selling the van.
