Delay in Thai-US Tariff Talks: Minister's Trip Cancelled

The much-anticipated Thai-US trade negotiations, set to confront the hefty 36% tariff imposed by US President Donald Trump on Thailand, face an unexpected delay.

Initially slated for this Wednesday, April 23, 2025, the talks are now postponed, with no new date confirmed by the Office of the US Trade Representative (USTR). The announcement was made by Thailand's Naewna newspaper.

Thai Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan conveyed that Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira leads the Thai delegation and is eagerly awaiting a rescheduled appointment.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra had previously marked April 23 for the negotiations, but plans have hit a snag. Consequently, Minister Pichai has withdrawn his leave request and will now attend the critical cabinet meeting at Government House instead of flying to the US as intended.

Meanwhile, members of Thailand's Board of Investment have already travelled stateside, launching an advance roadshow despite the postponement.

Their mission: to gather vital investor insights and promote investment as part of the broader negotiation strategy. As both nations navigate this trade quagmire, anticipation builds for a fresh dialogue to determine new paths forward in Thai-US economic relations.

There is nothing news on this as Trump already announced a few weeks back that these import taxes are on hold for 90 days

Not correct, he announced that the new tariffs would be on a 90-day hold but that the 10% blanket tariffs would remain in effect.

Put the tariffs back on in Thailand... Whisky is still too damned expensive, as is decent wine

Mr Trump indicates that the Office of the US Trade Representative is quite busy these days.

Vietnam faces a 46% tariff by Trump. It's reaction:

"Vietnamese exporters reinvent solutions on US’s 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs"

  • Vietnamese businesses are taking advantage of this opportunity to implement both short-term and long-term solutions to minimize potential negative impacts.
  • Exploring new markets with growth potential such as India, the Republic of Korea, Japan and Europe.
  • Businesses are working with partners to increase shipments during the 90-day tariff delay period to avoid inventory buildup and higher tariffs if negotiations fail.

Meanwhile Trump gets drawn in by Vietnam (Chess vs Checkers).

Maybe Thailand can learn from Vietnam.

Offer Trump real estate and license to build a casino complex. Within a year given Trump's past history with casinos, it will fail and default to Thailand.

Not to mention Corvettes.

The reason is,  China has said anyone that negotiates with Trump on the tariff talks will be held accountable!

Thailand is just a China puppet. This pretty much proves it.  Something everyone knew really.

So, what does it mean is the question?  Thailands tariff's will be held in place from now on at 36%?

Thailand will loose access to the US market?

This is heating up to be a real live tariff war, this is going to get ugly, and show who supports who.

You retiree's are on pretty shaky ground. If it gets as bad as I think it will. The Thai's will start loosing Jobs, factories laying off workers by the thousands. China cannot support them , they cannot support their own people now. So far as consumption goes.

Personally I would have an exit strategy ready just in case.

Thailand's negotiations with Washington on steep trade tariffs were postponed because the United States has asked Bangkok to review important issues, Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said on Tuesday.

US import tariffs 27.5% remain in place for cars and 50% for trucks

China said that?

Beijing warns countries against colluding with US to restrict trade with China

Commenting on recent media reports about the Trump administration’s plans to pressure countries into restricting trade with China in exchange for exemptions from US tariffs, a spokesperson for China’s Commerce Ministry said on Monday: “Appeasement does not bring peace, and compromise does not earn respect.”

You're saying if any country rejects Trump's extortion demands, that proves they are China's puppets?

Look upon this treaty my people, we have successfully concluded a trade agreement with the Trump regime.  Free trade in our time!

"Beijing will firmly oppose any party striking a deal at China's expense and "will take countermeasures in a resolute and reciprocal manner," its Commerce Ministry said."

That pretty much sums it up, Pick a side.

Not quite, you're leaving out half of the statement.

If I say "Drop the knife and release my daughter or I'll shoot you", you don't get to call the police and claim I'm threatening to kill you for no reason.

Hahaha, what?

The US will look to exempt any goods that they need access to.

Hard disks are going to be one of them. If the Thais want to wage war against the US they could shut down the small consular outpost in Chiang Mai in retaliation and whatever else they're doing for the Americans that we don't know about - and I am reasonably sure there's plenty going on.

Of course, it couldn't possibly be the US getting the hump  with Thailand.

Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai confirmed today that Thailand will not move forward with the purchase of F-16 fighter jets from the United States, citing the unfeasibility of meeting the stringent loan conditions attached to the deal.

Thailand wants four jets, current estimate is 19 billion baht, or about $570 million, or around $143 million/plane.

Perhaps Thailand might be interested in the J-35 at $70-85 each.

It has stealth-optimized shaping, including angled fuselage lines, canted twin tails, and an internal weapons bay to reduce radar cross-section. Unlike the single-engine F-35, the J-31 is a twin-engine fighter, providing better redundancy and thrust. The naval version of the J-31, the J-35, is expected to serve as China’s carrier-based stealth fighter, competing with the F-35C.

And just why would this affect foreigner expats in Thailand? Do you think the Thais will begin blaming the foreigners for it?

Personally, i see the PM bending over and kissing Chinas butt whilst diminishing American products and things sent to the US to appease China. I could be wrong but this PM has shown they stand with China and will do what China asks to increase their tourism from them.

Good, it's what every country in the world should consider, to teach this bully boy a lesson.

Why would this affect retirees?  Surely Thailand would want to keep their extra income with no real expenditure?  Or do you mean the exchange rates?

Thailand does not support China. Only this government supports China. And the government does not represent the people. This conflict has been going on since the previous prime minister.

Countries in South East Asia that re export or tranship products made in Communist China to avoid US tariffs had it coming to them.
