Pattaya Faces Mixed Reactions Amid Decline in Chinese Tourists
Pattaya sign on Laem Bali Hai Pier | Photo via Chadathip BarBeer Pattaya, a bustling resort city in Thailand, is witnessing a notable decline in Chinese tourists—a development that's causing a stir among local business owners and long-term residents. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) recently reported a dip in daily Chinese arrivals to about 5,000, a significant drop from the pre-pandemic figures of 15,000 to 20,000. The shift in visitor demographics stems from several interconnected factors. Rising costs in Thailand, attractive travel packages from other Southeast Asian countries, and ongoing trade disagreements between Thailand and China have collectively contributed to this downturn. A particular point of contention has been Thailand's refusal to reduce tariffs, a decision that did not sit well with Beijing. The drop in Chinese tourists presents a double-edged sword for Pattaya. While businesses catering to mass tourism, such as large hotels, shopping centres, and beachside vendors, feel the pinch, European tourists and permanent residents appear to be embracing the quieter atmosphere. An unnamed European resident expressed contentment, noting, "The concerns mentioned are all true, but everyone knows after Songkran starts the low season, and numerous are happy that the massive levels of Chinese are going elsewhere." The absence of large Chinese tour groups, once a staple in Pattaya’s vibrant scene, has paved the way for a more laid-back environment. European tourists relish the less crowded beaches and enjoy the slower, less commercialised pace of life. Smaller businesses targeting independent travellers report receiving steadier business from Western visitors looking for unique travel experiences. As the city transitions into its traditional low season post-Songkran, tourism operators are keeping a close eye on these trends. With the realisation that relying too heavily on one market could be precarious, there is growing optimism that a more diversified tourist base might offer Pattaya a healthier tourist economy in the long run. Many are waiting to see if this current trend persists and whether Pattaya can continue attracting a varied array of visitors as it strives for a balanced tourism industry. Report Abandoned Abroad: British Pensioner in Thailand Slams 'Immoral' Frozen Pensions Policy
Self-reliance was once seen as a virtue, especially during WW2, and the Blitz, when even ration books were scarce. Still, how fortunate to be alive and well in Thailand where housing prices, and a lot more, is so cheap. -

Report Abandoned Abroad: British Pensioner in Thailand Slams 'Immoral' Frozen Pensions Policy
for all of those that are inclined to state that this guy being a retired banker , should have been more financially secure than he is see below a few examples which could lead to anyone being in his position. Insufficient savings or investments Not saving enough during working years. Living expenses outpacing savings rate. Poor investment returns Bad investment choices (too conservative or too risky). Market downturns at critical times (especially right before or after retirement). High cost of living Living in an expensive location. Inflation eroding purchasing power faster than anticipated. Unexpected expenses Major health issues or medical bills. Family emergencies (supporting children, parents, etc.). Debt problems Carrying mortgage, credit card, or personal loan debts into retirement. Underestimating retirement duration Living longer than expected (great for life, tough for finances). Lifestyle inflation Increasing spending habits when income rises, rather than saving the extra. Lack of a clear financial plan No retirement budget or withdrawal strategy. No contingency planning for market crashes or emergencies. Unexpected economic events Severe recessions or financial crises. Currency devaluation (important if living abroad). Changes in government policies Reduced pension or superannuation benefits. Higher taxes or loss of social security supports. Divorce or relationship breakdown Legal costs and asset division can severely impact retirement savings. Bad financial advice or scams Falling victim to fraud or poor financial advice. Over-reliance on one asset For example, counting only on a house appreciating or a business sale. Health preventing work continuation Forced early retirement due to injury, illness, or disability. Poor insurance coverage Not enough health, life, or long-term care insurance coverage. -

ALL VACCINES WILL KILL YOU - The evidence is overwhelming
The phrase "do you consider these figures to be within the scope of acceptability?" is a straightforward question and not an appeal to emotion. The notion in question is the "safe and effective" mantra which was repeated incessantly during a period when these shots were imposed on the population through various "incentivising", and in fact borderline coercive means. I don't disagree with everything else you said regarding the potential flaws of these figures, hence the necessity to assess them in a transparent and irrefutable manner in order to remove – or confirm – any doubt. The causality (or lack thereof) can only be concluded through this thorough process. So the essential issue is whether the above-mentioned process/investigation was carried out. Was it? Because ultimately, no rationalisation can effectively dismiss these figures preemptively. To make an analogy, if the cops show up at a house following neighbours' reports of screaming, and find a man covered in blood and holding a knife running out, though at that point they can't draw any conclusions, they can justifiably take action to investigate and find out what happened (despite the fact that said individual will be presumed not guilty of anything until the proceedings officially reach their conclusion). -
