Pattaya faced chaotic scenes yesterday as a torrential downpour transformed the city into a waterlogged swamp. The heavy rain, lasting over two hours on July 1, led to severe flooding in Bang Lamung district, halting traffic and sweeping away more than 20 motorbikes.

The downpour raised water levels to between 20 and 70 centimetres, making roads impassable. The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) had forecast thunderstorms and heavy rain for the region across July 1–2, with strong winds and sea waves up to 2 metres, but few anticipated such disruption.

Areas notorious for flooding, such as Railway Road, Third Road (Chaloem Phrakiat), the Mum Aroi junction, and Sukhumvit Road, were quickly submerged. Traffic police worked extensively, directing vehicles and restricting access for motorbikes and small cars, although some drivers ignored the warnings.

“Some drivers tried to push through despite the risks,” reported an officer, noting that more than ten motorbikes were swept away by the strong currents. Additionally, ten parked scooters toppled due to water rushing downhill.

Remarkably, no injuries were reported. Nevertheless, police have urged both residents and tourists to remain vigilant and avoid flood-prone areas, particularly at night, as further rains are anticipated.

The weather outlook for July 3–7 suggests a slight decrease in wind speeds and wave heights, though thunderstorms remain likely. Night temperatures will range from 23–28°C, with daytime highs between 29–35°C.

The TMD has also issued a severe weather warning for 47 provinces, including Bangkok, predicting heavy rainfall in 70% of these areas. Risks include flash floods, forest runoff, and landslides.

Pattaya continues to grapple with the aftermath of the deluge, serving as a stark reminder of the city's vulnerability to extreme weather.

Pattaya flooded again?

What happened to all of the hundreds of thousands of baht< given by central government to stop this happening? Perhaps questions should be asked by local residents, of the local Pattaya government as to why Pattaya is flooded yet again.

They've done loads of drainage "improvements", of course it hasn't worked. Incompetence or corruption, most likely both

that was a wicked storm... 7 motorway coming home at 5.30pm... zero visibility holding it pegged at 120 in the RH lane.

Both hands firmly gripped on the steering wheel type of drive... no beer or ciggies !

Has the beach been washed away again?

I have no idea where the money they're forever reported as spending goes, this seems to happen at least once a year.

There is no point in doing something if it isn't going to work.

At least....

Fortunately they do seem to get on with the job of repairs to the beach and a good job too, it looks an absolute mess after a rainstorm, (like Normandy in 1944). If ever they let things slide there would be an end to tourism.
