Fed-Up Nottingham Dad Moves Family to Thailand for New Life

Featured Replies

He's going for DTV - so he's going to have to keep his balance up to £15k for as long s e's here. He will get income from working for foreign companies paying from abroad.

I presume he realises that most jobs in Thailand are unavailable to home and he'll need a B visa and work permit if he does find a job actually in Thailand.

  • sweet dream until he realises thailand is not as cheap as it once was. the golden years are over and unless he finds a way to get income he will likely be going back to th uk quicker than he thinks. w

  • Don't knock him, if you lived in Mansfield you would have taken Beirut or Dhaka as better options too.

  • i'm not up to date with the visa rules and regulations. how is it legally possible to simply move to thailand with a young family and decide to live here ?

Not fair on the kids man.

Your not loaded or have high paying jobs here.

So it's all going to go south at some point.

Sad but true

Mansfield is dread. I would not live there if you paid me. She and he can get TEFL jobs. Teaching adults English as a foreign language.  Though one or two I'll informed people on this forum criticise the profession that is always ignorant people who don't know what they are talking about. The beauty of teaching English as a Foreign Language is that you can progress up to PhD Level but start with a certificate from International House or the British Council. It is also a good way to meet people. I WISH THEM LUCK.

Surely if's lorry drivers suddenly being teachers who would be ignorant, not the critics of such a joke?

With a wife and two kids, I am predicting a logistical nightmare at Immigration.

I would think the kids will be fine so long as he sends them to a Thai school or a local "international" school - I assum he's budgeted for this.

They are going to home school the kids. :coffee1:

I haven't seen this mentioned, either in the OP or in the Mirror article. Do you have a source for this?

It doesn't sound like he's intending to stay in Thailand particularly long-term. According to the Mirror article, he reckons he only has "sufficient funds for a couple of years."

I can't believe that this guy is selling his house and car, then taking a two year holiday with his family in Thailand.  He must have some kind of plan that he isn't sharing, possibly as some kind of social media thing.  No way is he going to burn through all his money and then head home with nothing.

"5,000 stabbings a month in London". How many stabbings a month in Bangkok? What is the population of London compared to the population of Bangkok?

Same same but different.

The Visa process along will drive him bonkers.  Totally unfair to the children..

You would need to show income from a job you are still working in to have to qualify for the DTV. It's not just savings.

His kids won't qualify for a DTV. Neither would his wife.

I left the UK because I like living here, I liked the language, the food, the culture. I did like the people, not so much now. I thought about the benefits. Thinking about moving here because you think the UK is broken and full of migrants, etc .. will just end in tears.

Would be hillarious if he said Pattaya.

"The family's journey begins in Bangkok, moving to Hua Hin to determine living costs."

I think DTV makes provision for families -  Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) does allow for family members to accompany the primary visa holder. Specifically, the spouse and unmarried children under 20 years of age are eligible to apply for the DTV as dependents.

I read it, but don't think that will happen.

if they kept the house and rented it out, they would have at least some income.

It definately does not.

After 6 months, he'll have to go show he is still earning with evidence, and has the savings in his account.

Is this the start of new waves of UK refugees escaping economic doom?

It is an exodus of those who have the means to escape.

It's incredibly selfish to take kids of out of school and then not bother to put them into a school in Thailand. It's not just education, but surely friendships etc ?

Sports clubs?

In my experience, and speaking only for the UK, those who detest their own country are the least likely to be able to assimilate in Thailand. The most successful expatriates here definitely prefer Thailand but have strong connections with UK and have a great deal of affection for it.

Sports clubs won't be free.

Is his motive not put kids into school financial ?

If he had half a brain he would extend the flight and get off in Oz. Where the locals speak English and he can earn at least twice what he's earning in Britain as a truck driver, probably 5 times as much if he heads to the minefields in Western Oz.

There are no suitable Oz visas for people like him. Skilled immigration usually requires a degree and experience. There are probably millions of Indian and Pakistani drivers willing to relocate too.

Selling their home is a very bad move (IMO). But, maybe they are relying on inheriting property from their parents.

Yes, I think inheritance money down the road might be involved in their decision-making.  I don't know Britain, but in America the biggest shift in wealth occurred when the Greatest Generation, both thrifty from the Great Depression and hard-working, pasted down their wealth to their children.  In my case, we 6 kids each inherited $300,000, from our parent's house and stock portfolio.  Had my parents only had the typical 2 kids, the inheritance would have been $900,000 each.  Nice chunk of change.

That biggest shift in wealth record will be broken by Baby Boom parents, who earned even more than their GG parents, when their children begin inheriting.  So, sticking with my family example, 4 of my siblings have children, three with 2 kids and one who had 4 kids.

They inherited the $300,000 from our GG parents and that will be added to what they earned, and bought, in their lifetimes, including each owning at least one home.   With the average home value in America being about $370,000 plus the $300,000 from GG, and you're already close to $700,000.

I hasten to add that none of my siblings had especially high-paying jobs, although my youngest sister is married to a doctor.  The others were a teacher, secretary, home inspector for a home builder, and real estate agent.  Very normal in most aspects financial, but the combination of just inheritance and home ownership, not even including anything else, such as 401s, stocks, etc., has resulting in each of them being well-off.  Eventually, their children will be getting it, which perhaps gives them less of a sense of urgency than what I had in my working years, when I was living pay check to pay check.

Sports clubs are very inexpensive, nothing in the article that says he cant afford to send his kids to school.

No, it was a genuine question. I don't have TikTok and don't know how or where to find his posts on it.

All you had to say was, "He mentioned this on his TikTok."
