A Chinese tourist was killed when a large tree, uprooted by strong winds, collapsed onto her at Koh Hey Beach in Phuket on the afternoon of 20 July. The horrifying incident occurred in full view of her husband, who sustained minor injuries.

At approximately 17.30, Lieutenant Siraphat Chupong, Deputy Inspector at Chalong Police Station, received a report from Chalong Hospital of a fatality involving a foreign tourist. The incident had occurred earlier near the beach area on Koh Hey (Coral Island) in Chalong Subdistrict, Mueang District, Phuket.

Upon arrival at the hospital, authorities confirmed the death of Ms Wang Yang, a 53-year-old Chinese national. A preliminary examination indicated she died instantly at the scene from blunt force trauma consistent with being struck by a heavy object.

According to eyewitness accounts, Ms Wang and her husband, Mr Dai Hong Jun, were on holiday in Phuket as part of a group tour. Around 15.30, while the couple were seated beneath a tree on beach chairs, a sudden storm brought strong gusts of wind and rain. The violent weather caused a large tree to topple, crushing Ms Wang beneath it. Her husband was struck by falling branches but sustained only minor injuries.

Police are arranging for a post-mortem examination of the body, before proceeding with further steps. The Chinese Embassy has been informed.

Tragic accident. Reminds everybody to check the trees around your place when the storm starts.

Not expecting a tree to uproot and fall on you, but begs the questions with such high winds and rain why did they choose to remain on the beach for so long?

Adopt the Pattaya model. Clear all those darned trees off the beach. All they do is block the sun absorb CO2 and prevent erosion.😋

I realize prices are better as it is low season, but who wants to holiday in a typhoon?

See you in March....
