A British woman narrowly avoided a prison sentence after attempting to smuggle nearly 50 kilogrammes of cannabis into the UK from Thailand. On April 5, a judge questioned Lauren Martin's judgement after discovering the massive stash at Manchester Airport.

Border Force officers stopped Martin upon her return from Thailand, where she insisted her luggage contained only clothes. However, officials discovered 31 vacuum-sealed bags of cannabis, weighing a staggering 49 kilogrammes.

Prosecutor Elizabeth Walker revealed that Martin claimed to have met two people in Thailand who asked her to carry clothes back. Believing this request to be harmless, she allegedly didn’t check the contents of the suitcase.

At 31, Martin had been relying on Universal Credit and was under a curfew from 7 pm to 7 am as she awaited sentencing. Her defence lawyer, Betsy Hindle, highlighted her vulnerabilities and manipulation by others.

Judge Paul Lawton expressed disbelief at her actions, stating, “Bringing 49 kilos of cannabis is serious, and I’m skeptical of claims there was no incentive.” Despite this, he acknowledged her naivety and external pressures.

Judge Lawton acknowledged the seriousness of the crime but considered Martin to be capable of reform. Consequently, she received a 12-month prison sentence that was suspended for two years, along with a requirement to complete 100 hours of unpaid work. Martin had earlier admitted to charges of fraudulent evasion concerning a class B drug.

Martin's case underscores the dangers of naivety and manipulation in drug smuggling schemes. The judge's decision reflects both the seriousness of drug offenses and the potential for rehabilitation.

Drug smugglers get off scott free. Just highlights the state of Britain and it's "justice" system.

Also cigarette smugglers, all these retired pensioners going for a holiday then coming back with a suitcase full of cigarettes, they get told off and free to go. The law should be tougher on all crime regardless as that is the only way people learn.

Wow.

No jail for smuggling 49 kg of drugs.

2 years 8 months for a social media post that was taken down 2 hours later.

What a joke British justice has become.

inciting violent disorder, yes, the penalty was harsh, yet I do think all crimes should get a tougher sentence as that is the only way people learn, plus in certain crimes if not from England originally then deported back to your original country regardless of if you fear for your life back from where you come from.

Love the law in Australia, "if a non-citizen is sentenced to 12 months or more imprisonment, or if they are convicted of certain serious crimes like those of a sexual nature involving a minor, their visa can be mandatorily cancelled, leading to deportation. Additionally, even for crimes not carrying a mandatory cancellation, the Minister for Immigration has the discretion to cancel a visa based on character grounds, which could also result in deportation".

She didn't incite anything.

She said she didn't care if someone else did something.

If I say to you "Go to the moon for all I care" I am not inciting you to go to the moon. I'm saying I don't care if you do or don't.

The sentence was a disgrace. As is this one.

"urging her followers on X to "set fire" to hotels housing asylum seekers"?? is that not inciting acts of vilonce? Cannot have one law for one and another law for everyone else. Am sure you will disagree which is okay as we all have our own opinions.

'He acknowledged her naivety' naivety, yeah right, she thought it was dried rosemary she was bringing in right?

If this was a man he would automatically get 3-5 years, not suspended!.  The UK has gone mental by letting rapists walk free and now 49kg of weed and a suspended sentence..  You could not write this stuff...

She didn't "urge" anything.

She said do it "for all I care". Meaning she doesn't care if they do it or not. Stupid? Yes. Unkind? Yes. But it is not incitement. As I said, if I say "Go to Benidorm for Christmas for all I care" I am not inciting you to go to Benidorm for Christmas. I am not "urging" you to go. I am saying I am indifferent to whether you go or not.

Maybe read her actual post rather than swallowing up the MSM narrative hook line and sinker.

Her biggest mistake was pleading guilty, under immense pressure from the authorities and desperate to get back to her young daughter. Had she plead not guilty she would likely have been acquitted.

Either way, 2 years 8 months was a disgrace. Let's see what Ricky Jones gets for actual incitement to slit throats. Assuming his trial is not delayed yet again.

A little more to it than that!

Not really. Another tweet speculating about the nationality of someone caught masturbating in public, and another one enquiring whether the pro refugee protestors would be prepared to take one into their own house.

Very poorly worded with a few expletives. I'd go as far as to say it was quite rude. But not worthy of multiple years in jail. Anyone with a belief in freedom of speech and freedom of thought would surely agree.
