Chronic disease in old age

New research may have found the secret to delaying chronic illness in old age

Imagine two people in their 70s. Both are active, live independently and enjoy life. But over the next 15 years, one of them develops two or three chronic illnesses – heart disease, diabetes, depression – while the other remains relatively healthy. What made the difference?

According to our new research, diet may be a key part of the answer.

In our new study, our group at the Aging Research Center at the Karolinska Institutet, Sweden, followed more than 2,400 older Swedish adults for 15 years.

That is true in itself but there are many other reasons too, only eating organic does not guarantee a long life.

Up to 1840 it was even 30 years but also many people lived a much longer life,on average you are right .

What a lazy OP .... just posting a link. What do you recommend people eat then?

So the article recommends nuts ... problem with nuts is they contain polyunsaturated fats which can go rancid very quickly. So probably a lot of the nuts we consume are rancid.

Life was a lot more stressful for the majority of people then, especially with no modern medicine & vaccines.  Disease killed huge proportion of the population compared to the current day.  And not forgetting war.

Indeed, hence the great innovation (1 example) in rice processing that prevented rice from going rancid & getting colonised by fungi such as Aspergillus sp. , specifically A. flavus.  This produces aflatotoxins which are one of the most potent natural triggers of liver cancer.  But the same problem exists for most stored seeds (Never ever eat fungus infected seeds).

The original scientific article seems very good.  Given sufficient base level knowledge, I would recommend reading it.  Otherwise, just read the article provided.

Key point avoid ultra-processed ( junk food) to the degree possible.  Eat fish, veggies, & fruit as much as you want.  Eat a balanced diet to the degree possible.  Increase nutrient content of a balanced diet.

This all aligns with previous information on the value of the Mediterrean diet, adding more analytical evidence to its efficacy.

NB: my stats knowledge is not good enough to evaluate how good their stats are. This might, if they got their stats wrong, invalidate their conclusions.

still like that in Scotland

Advances in medical practice / technology will keep  you alive longer but it only delays the inevitable.

Types of sugars are important to consider - sucrose vs fructose vs nonsugar alternatives. More evidence is accumulatingt hat nosugar sweeteners are not all good.  Example, erythritol has recently been shown to have not good effects on the blood-brain barrier of mice (mammals) , research needs to be done on humans (mammals) to see whether these bad effects affect people.

Fructose is bad in excessive amounts (although, other components of fruit are good e.g vitamins, micro-nutrients, minerals, fibre), our bodies are not adapted to dealing with high levels of fructose in the diet unlike monkeys & bears..

So yet again, balanced eating is important for health

in their 70's already?  so cannot complain another 15  years would put them in their 90's   bit of daft thread really

Well, the majority didn’t have clean water, or know how to make sure clean water filtration, and they had worms, pests and infections to fight, and there where no cure like we have today where most serious viruses can be prevented by vaccines and bacteria infections with antibiotics.

There is some common sense but also good genes can help you as well.

Smoking and alcohol and sedentary life are the worst by far.  People don't realize eating poorly is just another addiction.  Eating garbage food just makes a person crave more of it.

I remember watching a woman on TV on her 104th birthday she was asked what her secret was she replied fish and chips twice a week and a whisky every night before bed.

I would say. its mostly down to genes and there comes a time when you ask yourself the old quantity vs quality question.

& staying away from tobacco alcohol and drugs. Genetics is a major factor, while one may be able to smoke and drink until their mid eighties, the other may drop dead at fifty with the same lifestyle.

If you have no good genes, then try to live healthy can be a good thing

Yeah, we now can live longer -- letting us reach the stage where we can only babble and drool.

Every time this subject comes up, I recall the ditty:

Eat healthy

Exercise regularly

Die anyway

That's my most trusted YTube nutrition and diet channel.  I highly recommend his channel.  He gives excellent interpretation of  dozens of studies by pointing out their strengths and weaknesses.  His reviews of the "hot" YTube nutrition influencers are polite but to the point.
