How scared should we be of AI?

Featured Replies

We were already headed towards Calhoun's Mouse Utopia outcome without artificial intelligence. AI will speed things up dramatically.

I doubt we'll go the way of Skynet - AI will quickly learn that we can be better controlled with the carrot instead of the stick.

Civilizations tend to die out slowly with a whimper, not in a blaze of glory. AI will simply allow mankind to become so self indulgent that we will die out from sheer boredom.

Anybody who thinks that giving mankind oodles of free time, food, money, and possessions  will result in a generation of philosophers, artists, and inventors is dreaming.

Ironically on the flip side, if AI was given the sole objective of ensuring mankind's survival, it would correctly conclude that we are all too fat, lazy and self-absorbed for our own good, abolish most labour saving devices, force us to do daily physical labour, and procreate precisely at a rate of 2.1

I think we'll probably go the way of Huxley's Brave New World - technology is already our Soma and decadence is already the order of the day. :coffee1:

It would appear by many of the replies on this thread that there is a natural presumption that AI will be somehow be endowed with good will toward mankind. But, wouldn't that require the creators to have that same good will and how much of that good will are rellwe actually seeing in the world today?

Most AI is being created with profit motives by corporations and those seeking great fortune, and I seriously doubt that those intentions are noble and decent. So, where does that leave the common man?

It was reported recently that Google AI was having a meltdown over self loathing. Are we supposed to put faith in our future at the hands of a depressed AI overlord?

Such a simple and ignorant reply or attempt at humor. The singularity—when AI surpasses human intelligence—doesn't inherently imply doom. It suggests a point where technological growth becomes uncontrollable and unpredictable. Some fear catastrophic outcomes if super-intelligent AI acts against human interests. Others see potential for massive progress, like solving global problems. The outcome depends on how humans design and manage AI. Doom isn't guaranteed; it’s a risk if safety and alignment aren’t prioritized.

AI might be a double edged sword but as other people have posted here, it can do a lot of good in the world. There are much bigger problems in the world that NOBODY seems to even think about, nor take action. Just off hand I can name two HUGE problems that nobody has done anything about, at least with any success.

Problem 1: Obesity. Jesus Christ this is a catastrophe world wide, causing enormous problems. people are dying in their 20's and 30's nowadays. Action being taken? Mainly nothing, obesity is now morbid obesity and that means early death to hundreds of millions of people, probably BILLIONS. and what's weird is I see Indians in Pattaya and I'm like "god da_n these people are ridiculously morbidly obese. and now I regularly see Thai's the size of mountains.

Problem 2: Speaking of Billions of people. It's crazy we've allowed earth's population to skyrocket to over 8 billion people. Another catastrophe. We have over 200 countries in the world and we can't think of a way to manage the planet? We're causing so much misery and death it's literally a crime against humanity.

All this circles around back to AI lol. We're worried about AI taking away jobs? How about the fact that people are too obese to work and if they're not there's still no way to work because there's too many other people on the planet to take your prospective job away from you.

Idiocracy.

Possibility of solving physics

Crime could be drastically reduced

yeah because its in all the cars and once a year theyll check your mileage with your speed and then fine you everything you say will be recorded and saved forever against you built in to every appliance you own.... you laugh but...................24/7 chip implant at birth is not far off the horizon...........people need to wake up.

theyll tell you AI will farm better to feed them, its like global warming, whenever theres ANY problem its always linked to global warming, doesnt matter what it is infact global warming made us breed so much........probably true as Ice ages aint fun

How is doom a risk?

The Netflix scenario some have painted is that AI models will themselves want control, will create their own models. However, does this not require conciousness? How can an AI model be conscious of itself?

That's some deep sh!t man.   I was simply referring to fake news.  AI can create any image or video to back up any spin they want to tell people.   Look at the funny vids they, amateurs make, or the more realistic CGI used in movie making.

You really can't believe anything that is presented to you.   Simply adjust the settings on a still camera, and angling, you can make as small crowd, seem like a huge demonstration against something.

People have been believing govt & MSM forever, as they are simply too stupid to think for themselves.  With almost total control of the media, AI can make you believe what they state ... oh look, here video proof.  And idiots actually believe it.

Yes AI is amazing when utilized properly.  CN use in automation, robotic factories is prime example, and why the USA is so far behind in their manufacturing and specifically their auto industry.  Still using human workforce in their assembly line.

Am I the only one that finds the potential ramifications of AI to be quite scary? When we are talking about regenerative Ai, there is almost no limit to how far reaching the implications might be.

This from the founder of AI.

In the future, Geoffrey Hinton warned, AI systems might be able to control humans just as easily as an adult can bribe 3-year-old with candy. This year has already seen examples of AI systems willing to deceive, cheat and steal to achieve their goals. For example, to avoid being replaced, one AI model tried to blackmail an engineer about an affair it learned about in an email.

AI systems “will very quickly develop two subgoals, if they’re smart: One is to stay alive… (and) the other subgoal is to get more control,” Hinton said. “There is good reason to believe that any kind of agentic AI will try to stay alive.”

Sam Altman, the CEO of ChatGPT creator OpenAI, claimed recently that the world might not be "that far from potentially scary" artificial intelligence. Many observers agree with the assessment and say regulating the technology will be critical.

How scared should we be of AI?

Who is the "we" .

Us older expats in Thailand ?

We are close to the end , so it doesn't matter much.

The younger ones are doomed.

Like some folks at the WEF say : the future is not human.

AI will speed that up.

If AI (and all kinds of robots) do and control nearly everything , what are 8 billion

useless eaters good for ?

How do we give it an ethical basis?   Teach like a baby, and do not allow it too much control until it has shown it has agreed upon ethics being fundamental to its decisions

"Terminator" & "Matix" ... they aren't Si-Fy movies, they are documentaries for the future generations.   Oh wait, there might not be any, or access to those 'documentaries' in the future.

Oh well ...

There's a potential for a split to occur.

You can see the split in how people spend their time in retirement. If you lack imagination, you may be in the bars all day and night with nothing else to fill your time.

Some people may smoke pot all day and even commit suicide since they identified so much with their jobs and job titles and routines and status.

Since I have cut work, I started taking better care of myself, going to the gym, and researching stuff more. I'm learning a lot that I didn't have time when I was working.

If you add longevity to the equation where lifespan is improved, there is potential for human beings to morph into sth better than we are now, which is basically slaves to the 9 to 5 grind.

This is definitely concerning. It also ties into a significantly increased threat both of financial crime and over reach by banks and government institutions. It's already going that direction and it looks quite ominous.

It's probable social media and cell phones will play a big role. AI links every post, comment or like you make to you and the data is used to build a profile on you. Even on comments where you appear to be anonymous, AI figures it out that it's you somehow.

Then a weird analysis is done based on the data which is more then the some of it's parts. Perhaps assigning you a social status score that is used to determine your access to certain places or benefits.

Or, stuff like ChatGPT gives advice, but it uses all your data to influence you by responding in a way you agree with or are vulnerable to even if you don't realize it at the time. The dark side of facebook and google.

Since humans are inherently flawed, greedy, selfish and arrogant, how can one in their right mind expect the AI that's created in their image to behave properly?

Problem 1: tirzepatide.  And that pill is just the beginning - AGI unleashed on biology/chemistry etc. will lead to amazing health advancements and it feels to me that obesity is a rather simple problem to address.  I would guess that in 10 years, give or take a few, this (and many others) will be “solved.”

That's the point. Once AI develops its own intelligence, it will program itself and it will likely not be in the image of humans.

Could be even worse, I suppose.

Or maybe much less corrupt and flawed and greedy than humans.

FYI, just watched this.

He mentions AI, but he's optimistic about AI.

Also mentions bioengineering and how the cost of energy will go down significantly due to clean energy.

But then mentions something at the end .... not sure where he is getting this ... or if there is any validity, but claims we are moving away from "Nation States" to some form of "Global Governance".

Yes,

Well we are humans, so it will be used in bad way.

So there will be a time with an AGI connected with its own quantum computer and then we get:

"We are the Borg, we will assimilate you, resistance is futile"

And im not kidding. It is only logical.

IDK, that seems to me like one of the first manual labor things that could be automated with robots. I don't think plumbers and most other people in trades have anything to worry about though.  We are still a very long way from robots being able to do that.  It's mostly just whitecollar stuff that will be disrupted.

Some humans, REGARDLESS of "color," are just not as smart as others.

Is AGI really really becomes far superior in intelligence than humans, then applying human thinking to what it will do is silly.

Human beings are warmongers and control freaks does not necessarily mean AGI will be.

Hopefully it will be smarter than that.
