Booking hotel - interesting breakfast inclusion issue

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

So we booked via Agoda for two nights in a so called 4or5 star resort in Cha-am. I intended to include breakfast but mistakenly chose the other. Price difference was around 200฿ for the two nights for two adults and a child. At check in I realized my mistake so I asked whether I can change it with no success. Agoda informed me the same and said it’s at the hotels discretion. The price for breakfast was around 450฿ per person per day (around ฿2700 in total).
Since it’s the same breakfast I just wonder  how they figure 2700 vs 200 based on prior booking  vs no prior booking.
Incidentally we chose to have breakfast at a nearby place.

No different than many other types of business. If I want to book excess baggage on a flight it is much cheaper to do it when booking my ticket rather than doing it at check in.

And never expect any hotel to do you any favours when you've booked via Agoda.

That's standard, cheaper if booked in advance.  Most are decent values.   My issue is, I don't want to have to wake, shower or mostly, eat a big meal before 10:30.  So we usually pass on that option.

Assume you booked no cancellation - otherwise you can cancel and rebook. That is the standard way it works though so you'll have to cop it. Could send a friendly email to the hotel but not likely worth the effort

Pre-booked breakfast is always cheaper........but works out really expensive when you can't get your **** out of bed before 12 noon.

I understand the comments so far where it’s cheaper pre-booked. The question is the difference of 13.5 times. More or less trying to understand the justification. Paying a bit more for extra eggs, toasts or somtam is fair enough. Other than that I can’t see where else the extra cost comes from. It’s not a few extra ฿ we’re talking 13.5 times more!!!!

Same with us, I have missed to breakfast option several times even I was sure I booked with.

Annoying when you arrive and find out you booked wrong. Never happens on other apps, just Agoda for some reason.

I must have made umpteen bookings through Agoda over the years all inc. breakfast....never any issues.

Maybe the reason is that the hotels will receive much less from Agoda than you paid. That's why the hotel will charge the full price for a separate breakfast. A hotel explained to me once that 2 whole floors are booked by agents for the whole year and for this quota the hotel will receive only a fraction of the real room rates. My guess is that for the quota hotels agree to a minor breakfast charge and it is up to the agent how to calculate that.

When you book online and pay for breakfast, they usually charge you a lower rate - in your case, 200 per person. But if you pay at the hotel, they charge you a much higher rate - in your case 450 per person - for 3, that's 1350 per night, and for 2 nights, that's 2700. Had you paid for it upfront when you booked, it would have cost you 1200 baht (200*3*2)

All booking portals and all hotels pretty much play the same game ...

So you suggest he stands at the check in and sends them an email ?

He's already at the hotel when he realises his mistake !!!!

Rules is rules - again.

What is wrong with Businesses not able to be helpful and compromise with a valued customer? Agoda wont know and won't care!

In this case, the hotel lost any breakfast business and maybe future business of any kind from this personal experience!

Strange things happen online.

I booked a hotel for 521bt ( one day ) on line, At the hotel, when I decided to extend my stay, I was quoted 980bt daily at the front desk to extend. Just curious, I went back online, booked my extended stay for 521bt daily.

it was 200 for two nights for three people makes it around 33 per person compared with 450 per person. It is this difference that puzzled me.

Yeah that’s my point. Even though it was my fault to mistakenly book the no breakfast option, surely the hotel would understand the situation. If it were my business I would’ve added breakfast at Agoda rate. Instead we got a cold response “cannot. Must pay 450 per person”. We know quite a few families with kids in similar situation going away for weekends and often ask for feedback about each others’ stay. Such experiences will not encourage us to recommend.

I have made the same mistake on occasion and my solution is normally the same ... vote with your feet and eat elsewhere.

Once in Chiang Mai I wanted to extend  my booking which was around 1000 baht plus breakfastl[long time ago} but reception quoted me 1500 baht. I booked on line for 1000 baht plus breakfast  and reception  had no idea why that was so.I usually double check  my booking because I have been caught putting the wrong dates  and last year  a hotel in Antwerp cost me double the price with trip. It was my fault  hence the cheap rooms were all gone.  After complaining to trip.com  the company were good enough to give me $200 worth of credits.

Sometimes hotels cannot believe the deal you get on line  example including breakfast and taxes paid so a good idea is to  have  a copy of the booking.Recently in Berlin Mercure hotel the man had steam coming out of ears when he saw the booking with breakfast and taxes paid.He said it would not happen again but did honour the booking.

Agoda is appealing because of being cheaper, but if you make a mistake, you are unable to resolve it straightaway!
It happened to me once, double booking in error! After several efforts, I was sent a voucher, which I was unable to use before the expiration!

Never used Agoda again for several years now.

Expedia was another bad experience with booking a flight from BKK to CM and paying for it. Only to arrive at the Airport and find out that the booking didn’t happen!! And they had a “ no refund policy “!
My bookings since has been direct with the Hotels and Airlines.

I very much doubt that. More likely to have been 200 per person per day. That probably would have appeared during the final booking price. No real way of telling as you did not actually book this option. I doubt any hotel booking would charge 33 baht per person.

Whenever I book with Agoda I do so using the free cancellation up to a certain date plus payment only taken out a few days before.....simple 👍

You better believe it. Have a look at the screenshot. 241฿ extra for three people two nights works out around 40฿ per person per day. You’ll note on the no breakfast included option that breakfast available for 942฿ per person for the two night booking or 471฿ per person per day.

Its just an algorithm...      there are many variables...

... Booking using a VPN from overseas (different countries), booking through the Agoda App on your phone, or Website on your laptop, cache cleared etc...    then the price is also different one day than another.

I had a similar issue recently - Just my Son and I travelling, so 1 Adult & 1 child (including breakfast) which was more expensive than 2 Adults (including breakfast)...    So I just booked for two adults and left it at that without further issues - Simply put, the booking algorithm had not been set up to factor in single parent travel.

I get the same with insurance in the UK (when adding my Wife to my parents car)...   For some insurers, the cost is just a processing fee (because she actually lowers the overall risk, when considering my 'aged' parents may otherwise be driving), then another insurer the cost is £100 more for a few weeks (because they consider an overseas driver greater risk).

The point of these examples is to highlight that when it comes to costing and prices all (most) of the sites run off an algorithm and they simply depend on the programming - second guessing why or how etc is a fruitless task.

My sincere apologies. That was indeed a bargain if you had managed to snaffle the breakfast deal.

ThatS why I always book a hotel that gives a free breakfastand if you miss it if you've had a big night on the grog or your guest isn't ready to go home it doesn't matter.
