What are the potential pros of the Trump Tariffs?

Protecting American industries

One of the most frequently cited advantages of tariffs is their potential to shield domestic industries from foreign competition. Taxing imports allows American consumers to buy domestically produced goods, potentially preserving jobs in key sectors.

Increasing federal revenue

Tariffs provide an additional revenue stream for the US government. As importers pay duties on foreign goods, the federal treasury benefits from these payments, creating a short-term economic boost.

Encouraging domestic manufacturing

Supporters argue that tariffs incentivize companies to manufacture goods in the United States. By raising the cost of imported goods, businesses may find it more cost-effective to keep operations within national borders, bolstering supply chain resilience and contributing to national security.

Its all about making America great again and not China. President Trump is winning with these tariffs. More to come in the next three years, cannot wait.

The Smoot-Hawley tariffs of 1930 were a major contributor to the Great Depression.

  • The comparison arises because I am flush with Thai baht.  The AUD I have in Australia are earning money while I sleep.   Sounds to me like you are a Lacessit hater.   Doesn't worry

  • His whole premise is a nonsense because Trump will not fire Powell.    He wants to but he can't, as the market would not like it.   Moreover, given the amounts needed to visit Luan

  • So where does the comparison with Thai baht enter the equation? It would be a Oz dollar to US dollar currency change. And the US dollar tanking would be to the OPs advantage.   Of

I am thinking of a holiday in Luang Prabang, where the USD is preferred.

Should I wait until Trump fires Powell, so I will get even more USD for my Thai baht?

A Swiss guy in Chiang Mai once told me in times of turmoil, the Swiss Franc is a safe haven.

Looks like he is right.

Yes, thats correct. Even when Trump said that Switzerland has to pay 39% tariffs (actually the US economy does) it went down by 1% for 3 days.

I'm happy to have my money in CHF.

Book ticket n go

If the exchange rate makes any difference to your holiday plans then it would be prudent to wait until a time when you're in a better financial situation.

It's nothing to be ashamed of.

The exchange rate makes no difference.

I simply like being prudent with my money.

I guess you must have missed my comment in which I lauded you for having such a great memory, though not fault of your own, and probably just due to dumb luck, that you have done well in your chosen field of Chemistry.

My view is that, if one is to do well in Chemistry, one must have an admirable memory....or, the ability to easily memorize and recall.

For some reason, I have always found it frustratingly difficult to memorize and retain information necessary for Chemistry.

Here is an example:

Can you draw, from memory:

The structures of these most important amino acids???

There was a time when I could, but not now.....

image.png.ae5df60eccfdf21ec4c497c278855aff.png

I would say that the "topic" of MAGA is pretty inane....

But, I would not say the same for the amino acids, which are far more important to life, as we now know it.

Do not know if it is the tariffs but the AUD has gone down a rabbit hole again.

Good grief! So now there's three of the bloody things? The lefty one, the MAGA one and now the AUD one?

I don't know where you got that idea from. I went there last year and it is not like the border towns where 3 currencies are normally accepted. All local services were in local currency but if you wanted to pay by card they would convert to USD for the transaction.

From the AI

"Foreign currency payments for goods, services, debt, dividends, or taxes are generally prohibited within Laos and must be in Lao Kip."

You should also bear in mind that the Lao towns that do take USD will probably give you the change in Kip.

Every website I have been on - boat travel, airline, visas, accommodation, car hire - quotes the cost in USD. I guess it's like Thai traffic laws, more honored in the breach than the observance.

I do remember in a visit to Vientiane getting my change in Lao Kip, which made for a pretty thick wallet.

Please tell me why my tourist visa is specified to be paid for in USD, and Laos Airlines will only accept USD on their booking website.

It is Payment Processors, not the supplier, that have preferred currencies and several from this area are not on the list.

It was always a bone of contention when Thais applying for a UK visa had to pay in USD, that is the default when local currency not accepted.

Meaningless. Too many dollars have been printed, they have to go somewhere.

China and South Korea have recognized the source of a country's wealth is not in the stock market. It lies in education, knowledge and research. Who would have thought not so long ago China would start building passenger aircraft? Or take the lead in nuclear fusion research? Dominate rare earth processing?

Most American universities have about 10% Chinese students. How many American students are there in China?

Trump is attacking universities in America, they are too free-thinking for his authoritarian mindset. He's abolished the Federal Department of Education. One cause of the rise of China, and the decline of the USA.

Isolationism has a price tag. When I last looked, it was $37 trillion.
