Pheu Thai Faces Potential Dissolution After Court Ruling

In a dramatic turn of events, the Pheu Thai Party finds itself in the crosshairs as Ruangkrai Leekitwattana, a member of the Palang Pracharath Party, has submitted a petition to the Election Commission (EC) urging for the party's dissolution. This request follows the Constitutional Court's decision on 29th August that led to the removal of Paetongtarn Shinawatra from the premiership.

Ruangkrai contends that the Court's ruling provides sufficient grounds under the 2017 Political Parties Act to disband Pheu Thai. He claims that the decision reveals actions by the party that might be deemed “hostile to the democratic regime with the King as Head of State,” specifically under Section 92 (2) of the Act.

In his petition, sent via EMS to the EC, Ruangkrai insists that the findings regarding Paetongtarn’s disqualification should extend to her role as leader of Pheu Thai. He likened the situation to the 2019 dissolution of the Thai Raksa Chart Party, suggesting a precedent for such actions.

He stressed that the EC should consider the 29th August ruling as definitive and employ it directly when forming a case for the Constitutional Court under Section 92. Ruangkrai argues that the EC can bypass Section 93, which typically requires further instruction to the party registrar, due to the ruling's inherent legal authority.

Ruangkrai further highlighted that while the Constitutional Court cannot independently dissolve a political party, the EC possesses the power to petition the court to explore potential violations by Pheu Thai. Therefore, he urged immediate action from the EC, emphasising the need to determine whether the party has indeed breached the law.

As the nation awaits the EC's decision, this development could significantly alter Thailand's political landscape. The unfolding situation places Pheu Thai under intense scrutiny, with possible implications reverberating through the political sphere.

The outcome of Ruangkrai’s petition could define the future trajectory of Pheu Thai and potentially reshape party dynamics in Thailand. Political analysts and citizens alike are keenly observing as the situation evolves, recognising that the implications may stretch beyond just one party, impacting broader democratic practices in the country.

For now, all eyes are on the Election Commission and how it chooses to respond to the petition. The political climate in Thailand remains charged, with this latest twist adding another layer of complexity to the nation’s ongoing political discourse.

It's either that or Anutin as PM.  It rests with the Peoples Party.

He still has a fan base, people still Rember it was him that brought in the Thai pension system, the 30 baht heath care ,and as the wife likes to say he did a lot to do away with the drug problem, that is worse now that then, ie price of a Yar Bar tablet has come down a lot now to just a few baht /tablet.

Farangs like to say get him out, but we are not Thais ,to quote Arnie "I will be back".

These pigs have been feeding at the trough for over 20 years now.

When the corruption becomes too obvious and the leader gets sacked or deposed in some way, another relative or nominee pops up to take their place.

It's political farce of the most brazen kind... TIT.

This is nonsense, it is more likely that Anutin's Party will be disbanded based the its corrupt Senate voting and money laundering scheme. I expect in the next few days the press will learn of the evidence the DSI has against the Bhumjaithai Party which is substantial. At this point the s___ will hit the fan and the Pheu Thai Party will not hold back. Watch for it.

Here is my prediction, and I hope it doesnt happen before I get back.

Tanks on the streets.

That would the icing on the Shinawatra layer cake.  I do hope so.

You think that all Thais from 8 to 80 don't know this? Have always known this. Say what you want about the T man he did throw scraps to his followers which is MORE than any other party or ruling green group ever did. Frankly I am constantly amazed that expats seem unable to grasp this basic simple fact.

Now after judicial coups against the move forward party or whatever its name is, then knocking off the shins last gasp .... the thai people have absolutely nothing left. No scraps nothing. Lets hope they don't get torqued up like what is happening in Indonesia, cause then us pats in patistan might have to up sticks and move.
Cheers

Whoever you place near the trough - eats from it... it is endemic here.   I think it was Suthep (though not sure) that basically indicated that the crime was letting everyone know it - as opposed to keeping it hidden from sight.  The issue with the party dissolution is that the democratic processes here are never given the chance to mature and thus no ruling that offends those that are powerful is ripe for getting a party dissolved... It will prevent the government for actually working for the people...  What is needed is to pursue those that are corrupt with criminal sanctions and long sentences... but not disrupt the maturing of the democratic processes.

If it were her shins, adjacent to her ears, then I would probably concur...

I think it is a done deal.  Remember it was the PTP that screwed the MFP after the election.  Thaksin may think people forget, but he should know better.

Anutin as PM is not that bad a deal.  First it does the obvious and shuts out the Shins.  However, with the PP just voting for him and not being part of his coalition, it means that only important stuff will get done and the PP will be able to ensure they get what they want.

Let's face it the next election would have been PTP against PP in a lot of areas.  Booting them out of government again, legally, without military pressure and without fulfilling any of their campaign promises, will be beneficial to PP and BJT.

Also, if it leaves Thaksin very vulnerable as he will not have the government power to save him, and his money alone will do nothing.  He is going to be relegated to the cranky old guy yelling at the kids to get off the grass.

Hey, it is endemic in every country. Look at some of the CDN MP that have been there for ages, while not as bad as the U.S. or UK.

Thaksin will be trying to makes alliances with anyone, promising the world to hang onto power.

Anutin will be doing the same thing, trying to get back into power.

It is getting smaller and smaller. Young voters hardly know who he is, they want a change.

Agreed. This is Thailand where some clown in Govt decides on a new rule...not a new law. This usually happens on a Monday when said clown is wearing his look-alike military uniform bought at the 20 Baht shop. Remember the 2pm-5pm booze ban & wacky weed farce have never been laws. I've probably forgotten a lot of others.🙃🙃
