Residents in Rayong's Nikhom Phatthana district are on high alert after a two-metre crocodile was spotted on a road following recent floods. The sighting adds to the challenges faced by the area, which has been dealing with significant flash flooding due to persistent rainfall over recent days. Local efforts to assist affected residents include relocating belongings to higher floors and providing support to those in need.

The crocodile was seen in the Makham Khu sub-district as floodwaters receded. A motorist captured video footage of the reptile, which retreated into a spillway. The reptile’s origins remain unknown, and a community leader has since placed warning signs near the area to advise caution.

Adding to the district's woes, a chicken farm owner in Mueang Rayong District suffered catastrophic losses, with floodwaters destroying her farm and killing 50,000 chickens. The damage, valued at approximately 10 million baht, marks the second such incident for the farm, with the first occurring in 2022. The farm owner hoped to sell the chickens on September 18, and compensation details remain unresolved.

Meanwhile, memories linger of 2024 when a crocodile farm owner in Lamphun decided to kill 125 crocodiles to prevent danger to the surrounding community during floods. This incident underscores the ongoing challenges posed by unpredictable weather and its impact on both wildlife and human communities.

Local authorities remain vigilant, monitoring flood levels and wildlife sightings to ensure public safety. Additional discussions on compensation for affected businesses, like the devastated chicken farm, continue as the region seeks to recover.

Key Takeaways

  • A two-metre crocodile was spotted on a road in Rayong following floods.
  • A Mueang Rayong chicken farm incurred a 10 million baht loss from flooding.
  • Warning signs have been posted in the area to caution residents about the crocodile.

On several occasions, I've seen butchered alligators and crocodiles in local Thai markets, with big chunks cut out.

Never seen a butchered monitor lizard.  Maybe that's because they're protected by law, but the cynic in me suspects it's just because they taste like $%*#.

Crocodile meat is tasty.

Feels bit like chicken breast; lean white meat, and not oily.

Tried 3 decades ago in the Southern Hemisphere.

Men in uniform willing to get rid of it(shoot) when posing any threat to the people of that region?

Or any armed civilians can do it for their safety?

Otherwise, just like saying feel scared till water subsides those beasts disappear.

There are a lot of croc farms in Thailand, and escapes are not uncommon. The problem also is hybrids coming from the farmed crocs and the rare native Siamese croc; for instance, the population of crocs in Khao Yai. This is just another example of the lax and haphazard regulations about keeping or farming wild animals in Thailand – the authorities are just too slow in getting the situation sorted.
