Former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra has been sentenced to one year in prison following a Supreme Court ruling. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul expressed deep sympathy for Thaksin, acknowledging his past leadership role during remarks at the Bhumjaithai Party headquarters. Anutin described the situation as saddening, noting that it is difficult to see someone of Thaksin's experience facing imprisonment.

Thaksin, who once led Thailand, has long been a controversial figure in the country's political landscape. He faced various legal challenges and was eventually convicted in absentia on corruption charges. The recent ruling adds another chapter to his ongoing legal battles, which have included both exile and efforts at political comeback.

The Prime Minister's emotional response highlights the complexity of Thaksin's legacy, which continues to evoke strong opinions across Thailand. Anutin’s comments suggest a level of respect for Thaksin’s contributions to the country despite their political differences. The ruling also underscores the persistent divides in Thai politics, with potential ramifications for upcoming political developments.

Looking ahead, the enforcement of Thaksin's sentence remains uncertain, as his legal team may seek further appeals or interventions. The impact of this ruling on Thai politics could influence future elections and party dynamics. Observers are closely watching how this decision might affect public sentiment and political alliances.

Not surprising to hear several politicians sadden that such a "great" man like thaksin is burdened and has to go to prison for the one thing that they actually were able to pin him down on. Even after the reduced sentences and royal pardons he already got for his illegal activities. They have no shame.   Clearly shows how little they value the average thai person and the difficulties they face while the politicians enrich themselves and line their pockets

just wait and see how soon he gets out under the current system of forgiveness of sentences under the loop holes they built into the legal system. Bet he doesn't do 6 months

Saddened?

I should imagine he is chuffed to NAAFI break!

Very much so.

I don't understand the hatred directed at Thaksin. What am I missing?  I would honestly like to know without stepping on anyone's toes or being called an idiot.

Does Anutin mean, sad that for once the law was served on a politician with a lot of experience in corruption, and that he is afraid that one day they may come after him?

Something for you get started on.

He has billions of baht stashed  away, he has multiple properties worth billions in this country and overseas.

He has multiple shares invested earning him more money.

The poor of the country who he said he would elevate out of poverty are still poor, after years of promises and 3 members of the Shinawatras in the PM position.

The man is a self indulgent liar.

At least that was an ANSWER instead of a flaming emoji. Sounds like the average Thai politician to me.

Pull the other leg it’s got bells on it

a) maybe one should supply Anutin with boxes of tissue paper so he can dry his crocodile tears over the imprisonment of Dr T
b) he should go and visit him as, who knows, he might be grateful being familiar with the facility for eventual future happenings

It’s only here where the vocal minority runs amok. Most are foreigners anyway who aren’t eligible to vote.
Thaksin is well loved by Thais else he and his family wouldn’t have been elected time and again. And his party getting the 2nd highest of votes % in the recent elections

The elections results speak for themselves they always garnered the most votes though in last elections they were 2nd.

The illegal coups are proof of that

It is sad that such good men like Mr Anutin and Mr Taksin have to suffer so much sadness.

I'll be praying for the both of them.  🙏

Of course they are saddened by it, they never know who is next now it happened and all fear it. So they want to keep friends at all places. Same as many dodgy lawyers / agents that are freaking out since recent months and many nominees are nowhere to be found.

Just one example, remember that many innocent people were shot dead by police during Thaksin's so-called crackdown on drug use.

Was the last clone democraticly elected - think you need to check your facts or lack of on this point.
