Best honda lawn mower on the market (medium size)

Featured Replies

Time for a new mower, 95% it will be a petrol honda but will entertain others just had terrible experiences with local shops bodging a perfectly good brigs and statton because they wont order its parts from bangkok.

I was all set to splash out on the Honda HRJ216 as the top quality on the market for non ride on, but just before clicking buy I realise its near 60 kilos and huge, thats total overkills for the half rai of terraced gardens and be too large for the size of the people who will use it.

I seek something that kind of peak quality, but in a smaller / mid size package. Price is not irrelevant but far secondary to best quality and local parts supply.

How can they make a push mower 60 kg, the mind boggles. Honda too expensive for me (and would probably outlast me) so a couple of cheaper Chinese models have taken care of a rough 3 rai for the last 7 years.

Good lightweight, a little fuel and a nonla hat and you’re in business.IMG_8949.jpeg.212f1508aab722c30603291bca8cc7e0.jpeg

The HRJ216K3 is a self-propelled walk-behind, not really a push mower, and I'm pretty sure it weighs under 50kg.

It's not really a big mower as it only has a 20" cut.

Assuming you have a decent place to store it on your property, there is no reason to be carrying it around. It would be my first choice if I were going to start cutting my own lawn. I would not buy it for someone else, to use.

If you have staff doing it, just get a string-cutter. Those four-stoke Hondas (as above) are great.

I think the Hyundai rotary mowers at Mega Home look pretty good for the money.

It is worth noting, that all things the same, heavier equipment is generally of a better quality than lightweight equipment.

Have a brush cutter with the GX35 motor (fantastic motor) but after market peripheries at half the price of the full Honda set up.

Doubt the OP is looking for one of those as they do not give the clean cut for a lawn that a mower does.

I also have had the same Honda mower for 12 yrs. Yes it is heavier (46kg dry) then most mowers but it's worth it for me.Honda equipment is always heavier as examples outboard motors, weed eaters and generators. I mow about .5 rai and would say I mow 18 times a year. I have never had a mower that performed as well as this HRJ216K2. It is easy to work on I've done all the repairs and maintinance my self.

Several things have really amazed me about this mower. I've never had a bag last as long and have never replaced it. I do wash it out after every mow. The capacity of the bag is greater compared similar size mowers. I'll admit the you have to put some muscle into pulling the bag and dumping it but very easy to reinstall when empty.

Second thing is if takes more then 4 pulls to start. I have found that usually the plug is getting old. and when I change and it starts on the 1st pull. Another thing I do is I always slow the engine down to idle for 5 seconds before shutting it down. If the mower has been sitting for 15 minute or more I always choke the engine before starting on the first pull.

I always use 91 or 95 octane. I have tried lower octane but it appeared to have less power and harder to start.

Ok now the big things that Honda really ought to improve, This mower has a disc that attaches to the shaft, The blades have a keyed hole and a flatsided bolt to fit that disc. This must have been an idea that Mrs. Johnsons 4th grade came up with, even if torqued to Honda's specs. Even if torqued to Honds's specs + 50%. I couldn't believe it when I went to clean after mowing and 1 blade was back 30 degrees and I never hit anything other then tall grass. This isn't just me as I've talked to others that had the same issue. So I  welded a small bead down the sides of the blades.

Ok improvement # 2 , An oil drain plug on the bottom of the engine, It looks really stupid to have to turn your mower over sideways to change the oil. That's a Chinese patent to turn your mower sideways to change oil and you would think the Japanese would be embarassed seeing their mower turned side ways to change oil.

Ok parts at Honda and their price is crazy money. You can easily buy blades, air filters, and etc on Lazada at 150% less

So in summary I love my mower but it took 2 years to make it a good mower.

Sorry yes its was 47 kilos..

I need a mower style mower as around the pool they fling in cuttings when using a brush cutter.. ongoing issue.. I need a less than 47 kilo one as the property is on a slope and has terrace levels that the mower needs to be moved between.. Lifting up 50cm per terrace doesnt seem practical with a 50 kilo 1.6meter long mower.

After many frustrating issues with a briggs and statton (not with the mower, with people servicing it badly and not getting proper parts) I want a honda or other VERY well supported mower. Unsure what the long term support for hyundai is like.. High quality yes, but the 216 is too large. The other 'honda' mowers I see cheaper look like honda engines slapped on chinesium chassis.

Good review, and I am seeking that quality, but as said I have a terraced hillside and moving a near 50 kilo 1.6 meter mower up and down 50cm terraces seems not ideal.

Looking for that kind of quality, in a smaller honda package.. Not a honda engine in a chinesium frame if possible.

Do honda not produce anything smaller here ??

My understanding is that Honda has not offered  an entire mower package for the last few years. I am in lawnmower hell myself the last couple of years due to weak parts and lack of service. You might consider a Makita either petrol or electric if there is a service center near you. That would be true in Chiang Mai and I have a feeling that’s their business model.

Have you thought about electric ?  Just picked up Hyundai, lightweight, and the wife loves it.

No more petrol, oil, constant maintenance and or starting issues.  Plug in, squeeze and off you, she goes.

However, you would need a bloody long extension cable, unless you go cordless/battery.

Half rai isn't that big, especially if that includes the house.   Wife trims the unpaved soi that we live on, and yea, that's a long cord 100+m.

Actually that's what it was bought for, as we have very little grass within the walled 1/4 rai, that does include the house.   Do need to get a wheel thingy to wind the cord up.   But it came with 15m cord, and we had 10m & 20m cord for the car.  One 20m cord would be more than enough for 1/2 rai, I'd think, unless it is all needing to be cut.  Did mention a pool, and it's really light ... terraced areas 👍

Cord wife uses was left over from the builder 😎

My B&S RAPTER mower needed a new carb, which I ordered myself from Lazada, Bht 1000. The local man fitted it for Bht 600. Perfect again.

My lawn is 20x20 metres, but I need to do it twice a week. Keeps my Step-count on my phone up, music on my Bluetooth headphones, takes about 45 minutes, need to empty the grass basket maybe 10 times.

When I lived in Prachinburi, I bought a nice mulching mower, but the mulcher would just not keep up, I only had time to cut it once a week, and the bag would fill up every three meters.

I'd really like to have a nice McLane 20" front-throw reel mower,

I'd really like to have a nice McLane 20" front-throw reel mower,

The secret is to do it twice a week so it hasn't grown too much. Fortunately I do have time on my hands, and feet to do it.

Yeh I know, the hedge and trees need a trim. Waiting for a battery trimmer from Lazada.

I have just done a quick search on Google for battery operated lawnmowers.\ and I have come across 2 main problems.

1   All of the sites want me to accept their cookies before showing me anything.

2   None of the sites seem to want to show their prices.

I have a problem walking and standing as I have osteo-arthritis in both knees. so I can only cut the grass for a few minutes at a time before taking a break.

I have about 2 rai to cut and most of it is long rough grass and scrub.

Does anybody have any good links to models and prices?

Thank ypou for any help that you can give.

Yeah, I was worker 12-hour days and driving to Bkk every week, trying to cut the grass on my lunch break
