A suspected bomb scare in Bangkok was quickly defused after police determined that a man’s tactical-looking vest contained only fitness weights. The incident took place on the morning of 12 September in Bang Bon District, following a tip-off from a concerned resident. Authorities later confirmed there was no threat to public safety.

The alarm was raised when a man was seen wearing a black vest with several bulky pouches, leading locals to fear the items might contain explosives. The Bang Bon District Civil Defence Volunteer Centre, working with local police, rapidly responded to investigate the situation. Volunteers and officers located the 60-year-old man, who explained that the vest contained bags of sand used for exercise.

Each pouch carried a portion of the total 20 kilogrammes of weight, designed to increase resistance during his daily morning walks. The man calmly clarified that the vest formed part of his regular fitness routine and apologised for the concern caused. Residents in the neighbourhood later confirmed that he was well known locally for exercising in the same attire.

Police stated the misunderstanding likely arose from someone unfamiliar with his routine who mistook the vest’s design and contents for something dangerous. Officials on the scene stressed that the report had been made in good faith and praised the public for remaining vigilant. They also encouraged residents to continue reporting anything genuinely suspicious, while staying calm in similar situations.

A Facebook post from the Civil Defence Volunteer Centre thanked the community for its attentiveness and reassured the public that no explosive devices were involved. No charges were filed, and the man was allowed to continue his day. Authorities concluded the incident as a case of mistaken identity involving harmless workout equipment.

Very trendy outfit. Home made exercise vest.

Poor Somchai, all the attention, he just wants to get rid of his beer belly.
