Acid reflux pillows for side sleepers

Featured Replies

I am looking for a pillow to help with my acid reflux issues. I have already tried a mr. big pillow, which is a bit too steep for me and too soft. While this may work for others, espcially those who sleep on their backs, it really does not work for side sleepers. I also have another pillow which is just a wide latex wedge with a height of about 6 or 7 inches. However, I think I need something a bit higher and more suited to side sleeping.  The only real alternative I've found is the MedCline pillow which is not available here and is also super expensive, especially if you also get hit with import duty.  Does anyone have any experience with this and know of a source in Thailand? Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Always do. But I need more elavation. The mr.big doesn't support side sleeping though and my other pillow is a bit too low. Apart from sleeping position, I am trying to work out what my triggers are. Looks like my diet will be as boring as hell though.

I am not sure if this will help you, but what I did was buy 4 yoga blocks on Lazada and put them between my mattress and box springs to get a good wedge on the mattress.  It worked perfectly for me but it depends on your mattress, of course.  I put them long way up.

I had GERD for a number of years and was eventually diagnosed with Barrett's oesophagus, which my doctor suggested could become a problem if it got any worse, so I tried all of the usual medications, although I didn't try Nexium, which was the "latest" drug after omeprazole.

Even after years of trying, I was still getting reflux despite changing pillows, bed height, eating and drinking habits and so on and I decided to try a natural solution which had good feedback from users and it was also mentioned in a couple of medical journals.

It came in the form of capsules and after a few months, my reflux was gone and I could even go back to drinking red wine, eating spicy food, including chilis and so on and I've been free of it for years now and I can eat and drink just about anything, apart from strong coffee.

When I visited my New Zealand surgeon/Dr for a gastroscopy checkup a few years back, he was amazed that the damage to my oesophagus had completely healed and when I told him the name of the capsules I took, he got onto the Internet there and then and sought out some trials of the product and ordered some for a friend of his.

The name of the capsules was D-Limonene and as I recall I took the 1000 mg capsules (or was it 500mg) for a period of a few months and apart from a few orange burps, I had no problems whatsoever. I still don't suffer from it at all.

Sorry to hear about your problems @GarryP and perhaps what cured me can possibly help you. Good luck.

Try with a pillow (maybe not that in the ad).

But more important is the reason for your influx.

I advise you to go for a pancreas test. First ultrasound plus blood test.

Then go from there.

In my case it is more likely genetic. My father has also suffered from acid reflux and other digestive related problems since his fifties. It seems that whatever he has, I have too, be that eczema, hay fever, high blood pressure, early onset BPH, the same allergies/side effects to certain medicines, etc. However, I will look into your suggestion.

Fortunately, so far, I have never had any issues lying flat (and I do not mean in the idomatic sense of Lying Flat in China).

However, if I needed to sleep with head elevated, for whatever reason, I would buy one of these.

This way, I could still lie flat without a kink in my neck, next morning.

You really do not need to buy anything.

Just put a couple of cinderblocks under the two front feet of your bed....(lowest cost solution)....

Cinderblocks about 4000 times lower cost than.....

Untreated oesphagitis and/or GERD. My brother in law's father had it and ended up having major surgery which raised his stomach. I hope I get sorted before that is required. BTW I love liquorice allsorts but haven't had them in years. Worth checking out liquorice root though as that is supposed to be good for acid reflux. Thanks. I would not have thought of that if you hadn't posted your joke.

Great idea. Thanks. I may have to invest in an adjustable bed as my current one wouldn't work with cinderblocks.

I really think, according to my understanding, that one must incline (elevate) the entire upper body for something like reflux.

A pillow would just produce bad neck strain.

So, I would not buy a specialized bed...but try to find a way to incline the bed I had.

NOTE: Also, only a very slight increased incline might do the trick....so, perhaps just two clay bricks might do.

I took 20 mgs every morning for 6 weeks, but it really didn't work for me. Caused constipation, an evil amount of stinky farting and belching. Also, long term use of omeprazole is not recommended (as opposed to occasional use).

The pillow I am using now is quite long and comes down to my waist.

20mg is useless, need 40mg, a Dr in UK told me that, he was right, was for gastritis at the time

Short term use though, they are one of the drugs potentially causing dementia. When i use Omeprazole i use it for the shortest possible period, recently 3 months only

It is not supposed to be a long term medication, only when needed, and symptoms start

OK, you needed it for 6 weeks.

I used to take pantoprazole for acid reflux for years.

Nowadays, I ensure there is a 3 hour window between eating, and going to bed.

Immediately before bed, I take half a teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate in a glass of water.

I can't remember the last time I had last gastric reflux. It probably helps that I drink alcohol very rarely.

The inclined bed might be quite a bit more comfortable than a long pillow....I would bet.

Yes, that's what I read. But I forget when I started taking it! 555

Right side can trigger reflux type symptoms, personally i try and stay on my back

I've suffered, on and off, with acid reflux for years and tried every conceivable treatment I've come across to little or no avail.
A few months ago, I sweet-pickled some young root ginger in thin slices and bingo! ... A slice or two before bedtime has stopped me having to sit up and wait for the reflux to settle.
It's worth a try, ginger has many health benefits anyway. I use young root ginger as it's less fibrous and easier to slice thinly.

I was thinking, tangentially, that one should never use an inclined bed on the balcony.

Just in case one is sleeping out on the balcony to get cool.

Which reminds me of the great film:  REAR WINDOW

These pillows and beds are extremely uncomfortable. You won't get any sleep.

Use omeprazole sporadically. I use it maybe 1-2 times a week before bed and AFTER eating (not before as recommended). Trust me, sleeping on these elevated devices will cause more dementia than a couple of pills per week.
