Passport validity ends, new one hasn't arrived

Featured Replies

Hi.

Anybody had an issue with old passport ending and new one still not arrived 😲

Uncharted territory.

I'm not in that situation yet but it looks likely.

  • My God, if you can remember a post about a passport problem from 14 years ago, you need to get a Mensa medal, or get a life!

  • Why not? Are you worried that they might read this thread and cancel your new passport in a huff?

Good question.

I was flirting with such a disaster myself on my last passport renewal.

I'm curious about the answers.

You might want to say your nationality.

I think in general you might be able to get an emergency travel passport as not having any valid passport is like losing a passport.

Not me, but I know an American acquaintance who due to aging/mobility issues relied on Thai agent to renew his expiring in 2 months US passport. He got the passport 9 months later and after the Non O expired, the last I heard he was waiting on agent to sort the overstay out next and update his immigration status! Money not an issue by all accounts and he's parted with well over a 100K with the agent to date. Moral of story to me was avoid agents!

What's the delay?

What's your current status on the old passport as far as current visa / extension to stay type?

Perhaps contact your embassy and ask if they could do something to expedite this? I know the U.S. says you can't order expedited service for passport renewals from Thailand but maybe they could do something in such a serious situation.

Has anybody called the embasy involved to get the real facts / the real / laws, rules, regulations etc?

Obscure EU country

Sorry..can't disclose the name.

Passport and non-O (ret) expire late Dec.

I was delayed by some personal issues...

Tried to book an appointment with the embassy today and the earliest slot is in 50 days😱

Normally no more than a few days.

My only worry is immigration...overstay fine, no problem

Btw...could I get busted/deported in the interim period?

Well you do have a lot of time until the next extension.

That's good.

I assume you've tried to contact your embassy to plead your case for an exception to waiting that long?

Yes, being caught with an overstay passport or unable to show any passport would be very bad.

I assume you have a copy of the info in your current passport.

Sometimes just showing a copy and the current valid visa/extension satisfies.

I'm still unclear. Right now you do or don't have your physical current passport with you?

To me sounds like nonsense.

I'm AU pp. Live in Bangkok. Immigration office is CW.

What's the issue

Seems almost ridiculous.

Your embassy does not provide mail in application for passport renewal.

What do people do to obtain emergency travel document.

Worse case scenario is to wait for new pp exit Thailand via airport paying overstay.

Without details all guesswork.

So you haven't even applied for new pp at this point

@sandyf has reported on here of having experienced this problem with a British passport back in 2011, if I recall correctly.

This is the reason I renew my passport at least 6 months before it expires. But nowadays, with EU passport validity of only 5 years it can be a bother.

Yes I do have my passport with me.

My embassy is not cooperative...I doubt that I could get a temporary document either.

OK I think I get it now.

You won't be able to start the renewal process until 50 days from now and you're worried that won't be enough time.

Do you know if your embassy will take your current passport while you're waiting for the new one or if you'll be allowed to keep it?

In my case I had to surrender my old passport while waiting and that's a stressful feeling even if you do have lots of time until the visa/extension expiration.

Moral of the story would be to avoid that agent, not all agents.

I don't play mystery embassy games.

You could always fly home and sort it out there.

If your embassy takes your pp from you for application then the time frame not favourable

Yeah that makes sense to me.

If they take the old passport to process the renewal and there's a high risk the new one won't arrive in time, leaving Thailand on the old passport to apply from home country is a sure but likely very expensive solution.

Embassy and country name are irrelevant

No ..they don't keep the pport when you apply.

My problem is that I will probably over-shoot the expiry date and be here in legal limbo until the new one arrives.

I think they are very relevant. Other forum members may be in the same situation from the same country eventually.

Why the secrecy?

Aha.

You're lucky they don't keep the old passport.

Well you could fly back home on the old passport last minute if it's clear the new one won't arrive. Or not. Are there direct flights there? I don't know if they'd let you board if there's a connection.

Another option if you think the new one won't likely to be very late.

Find a very good agent who might be able to manage such a situation, understanding that would cost and there would be overstay fines.

Not irrelevant. Some countries require old pp as part of application processs.

My joint Australia for example does not.

USA and eg Canada do.

What that means is that if there was huge delay with the process you could as last resort fly home.

Also some countries do not require in person appointment with embassy for pp renewal.

Your thread is like extracting teeth.

Just curious...    How long did you give it to allow for the renewal of your passport.

I personally believe three months is plenty - but I have had delays in the past so would be inclined to go for at least 4 month.

In another thread people were argueing that 4 weeks was plenty because they had received their passport within 3 weeks !!...

Well, so have I... but another time it too 8 weeks....    There is no consistency...

With such an important document there is no harm in allowing for 6 months to renews - no downside, but plenty of downside if leaving it 'slightly' later as this thread and a couple of others recently have shown.

That's exactly my point in my post above.

Of zero use to forum without full details.

Yes...flying back at the last moment is a solution.

There are no agents down here in songkhla province that I know of.

I'm heading to immigration tomorrow to explain the problem

There might be a 'grace' period

Nationality is totally irrelevant.

The issue will be on Thai immigration's hands, if indeed I overstay.

Good grief.
