Featured Replies

My Thai wife has just rec'd a request from Wise to prove her residential address.

Does anyone know if they will accept this in Thai language, e.g bank statement/letter showing address in Thai language?

Thanks.

Does she have a Thai driving license? I know that Wise accepts them, I'm not sure if the same applies to Thai documents that are in Thai language only.

Altering the address on a bank account into English is a pretty easy thing to do at Kasikorn, not sure about other addresses and it's absolutely enough to prove address in Thailand.

My wife did this two days ago. On her statements, the address is in English and the name in Thai. When I c&p'd the name into Google translate it came out with the English spelling. Perhaps that's why Wise approved the document in a matter of minutes.

For SCB this is also possible in the app.

English address on bank statement. Go get one for 100-200 in the bank. Better than change yourself.

Thanks for all your replies.  No driving licence and all condo paperwork, etc is in Thai.

Looking at the statement it is actually a VISA credit card statement, she has a/cs with several different banks so probably easier to go to a local bank and request an English language bank a/c statement.

I just received the same request from Wise. On their website is says that they accept a copy of the driving license if it has the residential address. This is what I intend to submit to them.

See how it goes.

I wonder if this is why my transfer is taking so long today ?

Never had this sort of delay before with Wise .

Up to now they say it is in the sending stage

Your money's taking longer to pay out

Sorry for the wait — we need a bit more time to process your transfer. We'll keep you posted.

Did the request come via e mail or on Wise webpage ?

Same here!

Just got my e mail asking me to confirm my residential address.

Didn't ask for verifying docs. Just push a button to verify address , suppose the docs will be asked for later.

I got my initial message for proof of residential address by email. I was able to satisfy this particular requirement by providing a copy of my latest UK bank statement (having checked that my address thereon exactly matched that stated in my Wise profile).

However Wise then decided that I also needed to prove my personal identity through my taking a photo of my passport photopage plus providing a selfie. The selfie bit was a bit of a struggle, but in the end, I was also able to accomplish this task OK.

But then Wise decided to inflict the final coup de grace in my case by insisting that I also needed to provide evidence of my right to live in Thailand! And a copy of my latest extension of stay stamp is deemed insufficient for this purpose. Instead I am required to base my evidence on one of a limited range of documents, none of which I have, including a pink ID card (but no cast-iron guarantee that this would be deemed an acceptable "National ID card" by Wise in any event, unless others can confirm otherwise, based on personal experience) or Thai driving licence.

So it looks like I'll be needing to find an alternative provider of UK-to-Thailand financial transfer services after 24 October, when Wise have said they will be deactivating my account with them. Hitherto I've always stuck up for them against their detractors on this forum, but, needless to say, they've now gone from hero to zero in my book in a stroke.

Incidentally, another way of detecting if Wise will be needing any of this bureaucratic nonsense from you will be through a bright red banner which will be displayed in the top-right corner of your screen after you've logged into your account with them - and which is impossible to miss by even those with less than 20/20 vision like myself!

So it looks like Wise may have been gleefully issuing similar emails left, right and centre today, in preference to processing our transfers in a timely manner!

I also got one. I was thinking of using my lease or maybe my internet utility bill, though the address is in Thai.

Once I have finished  getting this my money out of Wise , I shall get my money paid straight from England to my bank here .

I'm like OJAS , always stuck up for Wise , money a bit late etc.

Looks like we were wrong.

They will still need photographic evidence won't they ?

The extension of stay stamp isn't acceptable because there's no notation of your personal details on it. They'd basically have to take your word that the stamp is in your own passport.

They do accept a Thai driving license as proof of residential status in Thailand. Based on personal experience.

They only asked for confirmation of the address. Actually, I moved, so I put in my new address without any verification. Approval is pending. I'll see what happens. When I set up the account, I had to submit a photo of my passport, of course, but I'm pretty sure I used the utility bill for proof of address.

They only asked for my address , but this was attached to the e mail.

" Because of regulatory requirements, we need to confirm your residential address on your Wise account is your permanent one. We may ask you to upload a document proving that you reside at this address "

The lease and utility bill both confirm residence. So I can just upload photos of them, assuming they're  acceptable.

Ditto with the pink ID card? That's what I was really asking about.

IMHO we are entitled to know precisely on which regulatory grounds do Wise feel justified in subjecting us to this bureaucratic nonsense. I don't find nebulous and vague statements of this sort convincing in the slightest.

I personally wonder whether this might all have to do with Wise's recent decision to relocate the centre of their activities from London to New York, as a result of which they and those who use their services will, presumably, be subject to American Federal Government legal requirements, regardless of whether or not individual users are American nationals and/or wish to make transfers to/from the mighty USD.

Can't see Wise accepting this, personally.

I suspect that quite a few expats will find themselves in a similar position to mine of being effectively barred from using Wise's services in future. Could prove particularly problematical for those who rely on the 40k/65k monthly income method for their marriage/retirement extensions. Thank goodness I was able to switch to the 800k bank balance method for my retirement extensions back in 2022!

And why wouldn't they accept? All their Thai Wise customers have their address in Thai language

Not accepted cos the address is in Thai, well mine is. In fact my house number is shown but the rest is in Thai.

So effectively you'll be unable to continue making monthly 40k/65k transfers for your annual marriage/retirement extensions through Wise unless you possess a Thai driving licence.

Is there really any such thing as a Thai Wise customer, though? If such do exist, they will be unable to use Wise for transfers into their Thai bank accounts since Wise only recognise account names stated in the English language format. Whereas Thais can only have their account names stated in the Thai language format (at least that was what my Thai wife was told when she asked Bangkok Bank whether she could change her account name to the English language version stated on her ID card a few weeks ago).

According to Wise it is possible
