Racism towards foreigners on the increase?

Featured Replies

I was at the hospital with my girlfriend and was sitting there using my phone.  The old matron started talking in a loud voice ''Why is HE here?''  ''Where does the foreigner come from?''  She then referred to everyone in the queue as ''Khon Thai'' in a loud voice.

Second day was the same place.  She was chatting to the young nurses and said ''Ai falang mein kii.  Mein kii!''  The foreigner smells of <deleted>.

So today I didn't go in because there was no where to sit.  But I could see her marching up and down and she looked at me one time.

It was at a Hospital.

Went to the Seven Eleven and woman literally looked up at me and started filing at her nails.  The other beanpole beside her just looked away.  My girlfriend got them working by telling them ''Nong, Mii All Member''  So they started to serve me but only because she was there.

Some other Seven Eleven guy slammed the change into my hand.

How about you?  Have you noticed a rise in racism recently?

Same here. Not even a sign of it.

I feel cheated.

Living out in the sticks off the beaten track where you would think that its not the norm to see "farangs" and in 20 yes never heard of experienced anything in the slightest, quite the opposite, the people I encounter are if anything, more polite and courteous than they are to Thais.

Polite, courteous, respectful.....and occasionally curious.....is my experience.

Where are you located?

This is coomon in Pattaya these days, the Thai's are fed up with all the disrespectful foreigners arriving.

Years ago we were treated like kings, these days we are hated.

WARNING to those of you who are thinking about retirement in Pattaya, you've missed the boat, find elsewhere.

Too many miserable, moaning, whinging and whining foreigners here now

May not be the same as 20 years ago, but Thais realize most of them would be out of a job if foreigners stopped going to Pattaya.

So who cares what they're thinking? I doubt they are openly hostile to foreigners unless the foreigner gives them a reason to because they know where their bread is buttered.

I don't care, I'm thinking of moving to Isaan, to be with the nice foreigners.

We have to separate the locals from the government... the government have chosen nationalism instead of economic prosperity. The locals are fine and there's no change, just as cool as they always were... problem is, officialdom has gone oppressive, not just for us foreigners, but for the locals to. Most locals are very unhappy with the ruling class and their indifference to be fair.

What about Indian bashers in Pattaya? I am in the West at the moment, married to a Thai for 22 years, and have been to Pats many times, never seen Indians sharing a bottle of Coke. We mostly frequent Indian or Chinese restaurants. Spotless clean. Indians like to wear gold, but we don't have many ladyboys. Never seen one. Why bash Indians? Bash Farangs, they are the worst.

Some Indian restaurants do not look spotless clean to me.

Do you like to wear gold too?

What does the last sentence mean? There are no Indian ladyboys?

OP is a newbie whose avatar is a snowflake.... that says it all to me

I was at Chiang Mai Ram Hospital and after paying the bill the cashier slammed the receipt on the counter.  On that day it seemed like all the workers were pissed off.  It was early in the day and I was the only who came in for a blood test. I guess they are not "morning people".  Blatant rudeness in my experience has been rare but the Thai version of  "passive hostility" has been a somewhat regular experience for me.   "passive hostility" goes something like this: When I contact some Thai people they will look me over from top down, tilt their heads, put out a smile and when I try to speak Thai (my pronunciation and tonal inflection have always been terrible) I get the "you dumb foreigner you can't even speak the language properly" look. Nothing I can do about it except to "keep calm and carry on" until I carry myself out of the country.

You're not going to want to hear this but check yourself.

Do you smell? Did you shower before going out or at least evening before? Many in UK and EU don't have access to water/ bath like US for instance and especially Thailand. I shower probably 4x a day if I'm out and about. Moreover, we are often said to smell differently than Asians. Do you eat only farang food? Lots of processed food?

Are you dressed well? That might mean better than the locals if living upcountry. Not in tired, stretched out singlet and oversized cargo shorts and if course flip flops.

Do you shave regularly?

Are you a proper weight / BMI?

When going out do you look your best?

Why is your gf with you everywhere you go???

I would have to have a good look at you before expressing an opinion. In Thailand manners and appearance matter.Nothing wrong with that but another aspect is that Thais like to be able to "place" people including foreigners. With Thais it's easy for them but hard to make much sense of an anonymous foreigner and his "girlfriend".

I've been here decades and never experienced racism. When I first came here farang got a great deal of (unmerited) respect. Now that most farang are not exactly gents - to put it politely - Thais are much more discriminating.

No never experienced it ,  you need to look closer to home, much closer,  i have not long ago been discharged from hospital after some surgery, every member of the staff who had encountered me and who was on shift at the time came to say good bye and wish me well

It must be you , sorry but maybe you do smell like $hit and don't realise it . there is probably more to it anyway , nurses are not that concerned about the smell of bodily fluids or waste , they encounter it every day

Your story reads like fiction.

Stick to Penthouse Forum type stories....at least those stories are comical.

Its not racism its Xenophobia and this incident never happened

22 minutes ago, jayboy said:

I've definitely experienced racism. But some of it understood like sitting next to me the farang especially women. There's already a thing where women will tend to sit or be nearer women. This especially true when on transit and you are farang.

Totally understand a Thai woman not wanting to sit next to me for hours on a bus. I don't like it but understand it

When I'm clean, but simply.. dressed averagely often women especially the cute ones won't queue or sit or stand near me. That's like slides not shoes and some mid shorts shirts. When I'm dressed better, proper shoes, nice shirt/ shorts, maybe a bit of cologne the girlies will queue behind me and even stand, sit next to me. I've definitely noticed this.

On rare occasion I can even get a smile or two. Maybe not from 20 somethings so often but 25++ a d definitely 35++. Not bad for 65 yo

Thais very much into appearance, smell, cleanliness. To disregard this a d live here is at your peril

I'm not bothered by it TBH. I'm 65yo farang. That's there choice and preference. I'm far more troubled by hospital and national park double pricing

* Many Thai women want to stay far afield even in BKK. They think they'll be taken for prostitutes in our proximity. Bless our gfs and wives.
